I need your help HHOers I have another 'Jack issue' So after 'the saga of the sore feet' he had his expensive gel pads stuck on and was feeling full of himself so.......Cue Jack racing about the paddock and completely jarring himself up!
frown.gif

I'm not very good at all when it comes to assessing injury or lameness from the ground so I hopped on him quickly to walk him in a straight line and feel for what was wrong. He felt curled to the right, but was not backing off his front feet at all so I could feel it wasn't a sore foot issue. On my hunch called out physio and she looked him over. She said he was sore on his loins (more so right/off side than left) and sore on his shoulders again (more so right/off side than left)
frown.gif
Muscle wise she said he was the most supple she has ever felt him, which is a huge step fwds, but that he has really jarred his ligaments hooning about, and this is why he is feeling the moving oddly now (in the last 4 days) So cue massage magnetic rug heat pads and box rest, and some walking out in hand for A WEEK!!!! Jack is not a good patient so I may be a bruise or two up by the end of next week
frown.gif

She is gonna reassess him after this week and then he can be turned out in a very small (eg not enough room to get up speed!) patch of paddock, and we will work out what to do next.

He is such a daft horse I am gradually as I try to prepare him to compete finding out all the dos and don't of Jack but he's not helping either by going hell for leather round the field when he is feeling well.

So.....any tips to stop him doing this again, any tips to avoid getting bitten to death as he hates being trapped in his box, and general methods to manage self harming ponies pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase.....

I swear he is reading my blog I am no longer going to type 'Jack is coming along nicely' in case he takes that as his cue to stamp on a flint or eat some ragwort!!!

I can offer a custard doughnut, some chewing gum, and I think I might have a fluffy soft mint kicking about in the bottom of my handbag for those of you who are really desperate!

Oh and........................IT'S FRIDAY AND EASTENDERS LIVE REVEAL SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been winding myself up about this all day so excuse me if I an unnaturally excited about what is essentially total trash TV

My money's on Roxy!

Apparently all the money is on Tracey (her who never talks), bookies have stopped taking bets on her!
grin.gif

Hope Jack recovers quickly, perhaps if you write in your blog that galloping round the field hell for leather is good he will do the exact opposite! LOL

2nd hand chewing gum, lovely offer...

I'd prob put a chifney in for walking out in hand. Pocketful of ponynuts for quick distraction/reward can help. Would he be safer if you were riding him?
As for stopping him hooleying... Small paddock, and only shift fencing to make it bigger if there's loads of lovely grass on the new bit works usually, but impossible at this time of year...

We will have to rename this forum CGHEO, what a popular person you are today

Sorry to hear about Jack , they dont do themselves any favours do they. has he been talking to one of mine, she managed to jar herself up in the field just before Christmas, giving herself a big knee, then when she was back in slow work threw a complete wobbley in the school when a pidgeon flew out in front of her. She managed to give me whiplash and concussion, and pull muscles in her shoulder
crazy.gif

Cant give any tips for box rest as she takes to it like a duck to water, but we are dreading turning her out again. She is now back in work, and we have loose schooled her in the 40x40 school, where she has actually been quite sensible. Dont want to lunge her yet as think this could put too much strain on her shoulder. Fairycakes has ridden her today after I had hunted out the pidgeons from the trees at the side of the school
smile.gif

As soon as we realisd she had hurt her shoulder we added arnica tablets to her feed dont know if they helped, but it seemed worth a try.

Hope Jack recovers soon.

Oh yes I am another (?sad) one who is getting quite excited about Eastenders, found myself thinking it could be Roxy after last nights episode, but I expect to be proved wrong

Think a bridle may be a good call out walking and small patch...sigh he seems like the type to b*gger himself up, I'm hoping it's just a phase he'll grown out of (he's 11!!!)
smile.gif

Hope the knee is feeling better now

Oh that has reminded me I have some arnica I could add to his feed thanks always broke.

Your mare seems to being going for the double whammy concussion and whiplash OUCH!!!

I think Roxy although the bookies fave seems to be Staceys mad brother Shaun.....the plot thickens.....

Noow nooooowww noooow

Shaun and Roxy had that weird frozen lake scene then he emerged from the water and wandered off into the fog....

Anyway even if he was dead that wouldn't stop him it didn't stop Dirty Den!

Thank you I had thought about calmers but would only use that as a last resort bit expensive to buy it for just a week or so in...

Phil....well he did have a blood stained shirt......hhhmmmm

Well guess you can't help being popular ....LOL!

Sorry to hear about Jack, he looks a lovely sort! My lad went through a stage of being a real pain in the field and injuring himself and consequently needed box rest for various reasons!

I was really surprised with how he coped with box rest as he is so not the type, so you may get a nice surprise! I treated him to some really nice hay (the expensive stuff from the feed merchants that always smells really good, but over £4 a bale
ooo.gif
shocked.gif
!!) Tied up some swedes/a log on rope and hid carrotts in his hay bar! & made sure he had lots of nice attention, groomed etc (oh i left the radio on for him too for a bit of company!) Loads of nice bedding! I found him upside down with his legs in the air, so chilled out to Classic FM.....ha ha! He loved it
grin.gif
! In fact i think it helped us bond better in this time strangely!

As for the field, lordy lord, at the moment no idea, have you tried giving him hay in there to try and settle him, or a small holed hay net if there is not much grass to keep him entertained! A calm companion? Or in a field with a good view so he doesn't mess around bored? I moved my lad from the back field at home (where he can see nothing but fields and hedges, to the front, which is in the middle of the village, he loves it, mugging school children, just watching the world go by, he is a lot calmer!)

Hope you get there with him and he recovers well!

Oh and i'm very excited too, my money is on ........ Jack !!!!

Or he could do a Bobby Ewen in Dallas & have dreamt it all in the shower
laugh.gif
(showing my age now), anyway my money is on Jack, oh forgot I haven't got any money with 2 horses!!!!
grin.gif

it was ryan!!! has motive and has no ongoing story lines so easy to get rid of (thaats why i dont think it phil for example they need him for other plots ot ian beale) not jack i think i like him
wink.gif

I have had a litttle research and i see there is a calmer Called Betamag 12 powder that is designed for short term use, its only £20 ish, gotta be worth a try and better than self harming!!! Take a look on the website.

P.s. I have heard Bradley commits suicide tonight!
mad.gif
frown.gif

we chuck ours out in the arena for a while in the morning whilst we muck out etc so if they want to run about they can but at least the surface under the foot is better and then by the time they go in he field there bored and hungry - not sure if you could try this?

My money is on Stacey - worried Bradley would leave her/ Alfie would take away the baby....
shocked.gif

plus read in a gossip mag that Bradley is leaving and a possible story line was suicide
shocked.gif
(i know i have far too much time but what else am i meant to do in this snow

have you tried using ACP in the field? My boy was on box rest and when it came to turn him out drugged him up with ACP as he was prone to going crazy he went out on ACP for about 2 weeks and then for some reason he was fine in the field after that. Whether the ACP took the edge off something he was scared of and he realised that it actually wasnt that bad to be out? who knows but i'd tried everything to calm him down in the field and after being on ACP he is as calm as anything now!

i can't comment on eastenders...sorry, but how can you watch that depressing drivel?!
tongue.gif

with regards to jack...he sounds similar to my TB. does he hooley about when he's been out for a while (i.e. out of boredom/ nothing to eat) or does he do it when you put him out? if its the first one then i wouldn't put him out for very long and if the second i'd put him out as much as possible...my TB goes mental if he's not been out for a few days and rips his shoes off but now he's going out more and for longer he just mooches away from the gate. i also try to turn out early before all the other horses are out so he's out when the others start hooleying round....

The best thing I have ever invested in is a horse walker for self harm horses, an hours good walking on this then turned them out, keeps them sane and quiet, I also dont feed our fizzyy ones prior to going on, first thing in the morning they are straight on it, then in the field with feed, hay etc if needed. The other option is work him before you turn him out to take the edge off of him, and dont feed him first, feed in the field if possible so it takes his mind off of going mad. A from that small stable sized area with loads to eat and slowly make it bigger.

Its a vicious circle, the more they are in, the more they go stupid when turned out, but turn out is so important to their health and wellbeing it would be so much easier if we could tell them to behave and they would be out far more, than hooning around like idiots and hurting themselves.
