Since he arrived I've switched new horse into a bit borrowed from our instructor (at her suggestion). He much prefers it to the one he came with and I could do with buying one so I can give hers back. I'd rather just buy an exact replacement as he's happy in it and I don't want to change anything. However in order to buy a new one I need to work out exactly what this one is, and that's where I'm struggling - clearly there are bit measuring conventions but I don't understand them!

Bit is a Sprenger KK Ultra snaffle - so nothing complicated; the rings are 70mm (I've got that far) and I'm assured it's a 5.5". However when I measure ring to ring it's 145mm. Are bits not measured in inches any more?

The main thing though is the width - Sprengers seem to come in 14mm or 16mm...but what is this a measurement of?! When I measure the actual thickness of the mouthpiece at its thickest point, it's 10mm.

Assistance much appreciated....I'm actually too embarrassed to ask anyone face to face because I'm afraid the answer is probably so obvious!

sprengers and many newer designed bits are measured in mm not inches.

the width is the measurement just about where the bit rings slot through the cannons. I have got one that's thinner than 14mm but it's a bradoon and so has small rings.

Thanks very much, I appreciate the help. On closer inspection 14mm is about correct for the width right where the rings slot through. I can't imagine it would be any thinner than that because that would be unusual. So, it's a Sprenger KK Ultra loose ring snaffle, 145mm, 14mm width, 70mm rings. Now all I need to do is find one for under £100. *sigh* He likes it so much though, I don't want a cheaper knock-off!

Yep, that's what I'm up to now, scouring eBay. I guess because there are so many variables I'll just need to wait and keep an eye on what comes up. There's nothing at the moment that quite matches, except one from Stuttgart...I was hoping to buy from within the UK

ETA, I think my eBay search skills have gone downhill recently...I've found some now. My bank account will be so relieved. I've been hugely appreciating all the horsey second hand FB groups recently!

When buying kk secondhand just be careful the ones I have had in to sell are often pitted or marked. Make sure you get some really good photos.
