MEAT!!!!

Hiya Hun

As most dried feeds are cereal based a vet once told me "you wouldn't see a pack of dogs queing up to take on a corn field would you" Their natural diet is meat - raw, skin, bones, offal and all (there is a lot of interesting websites about "natural feeding for dogs"). We looked into feeding Ki this way but found it inpractical because of his size - I would constantly be at the butchers begging for off-cuts. Having said this, we do feed meat (not tinned as most is full of artificial crap and makes them fart badly!!!) we give raw mince, chicken etc also any left over cooked meats we have. This we mix with his dried feed. It can be done quite cheaply if you look out for meats that have past their sell-by and therefore are being sold off cheap, also the buy 2 for a £5 chickens you can get, roast one and feed this, Finn and Tinks will think you are the Christmas Fairy!!

Out of interest, what level of protein did your breeder say was an acceptable level for Ridgies. Ki does get spots on his tummy, although they aren't white spots, they look like ringworm and he was treated for this but they didn't clear up. The vets have now tested a hair sample and confirmed that it isn't ringworm and they reckon it's "teenage spots" (??) and that he'll grow out of it, but am now wondering if it's too much protein.

He's looking lovely by the way - love those knees!!

[/ QUOTE ]OMG!!! Freaky - I was just an the middle of an email to you asking what you fed Ki!! LOL!!

If we have chicken and I prepare it I always have 'offcuts' - the bloody bits or the white bits YUCK that I cook up for the dogs with some rice and they LOVE it!!!

The breeder didn't give a 'level' of protein however the food that he sent Finn with was an Adult food... containing less than 7% protein.. TBH I changed his food almost immediately (gradually) as I wasn't happy with him having adult food... I didn't feel the food he came with was giving him enough nutrients/vitamins etc. Hence the Royal Canin biscuits.

I think Mince is definately going to be the way forward .. thanks chick... plus any rabbits/phesants that OH shoots!! LOL!!

As for the protein spots, breeder said that they would be white dots on his coat... however Finny does have little red 'pimples' on his belly - but I think they are just 'irritations' from grass/straw etc as they come and go all the time!! LOL!!

You'll have to post piccys of your GORGEOUS Ki on here honey... everyone will LOVE him!! I certainly do and I hope Finny grows up to be just like him!!

I think Finn may be a little bigger than your lad though!! The knees are massive!! He look slike the hulk with HUGE forearms!!! LOL!!

i was advised to feed my 2 somewhere between 18% and 24% protein if thats any help. i have large dogs too, i was led to believe this was because you needed them to grow slow and steady, thus avoiding growth issues like panostitus ect.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes.... plus RR's get protein spots apparently!!

Thanks...

BARF- Bones and raw food.

All meat should be fed raw, as should bones, chicken carcasses are fine, chicken wings, not dangerous at all when raw. Also dogs (if fed from pups) love raw carrots, apple, any sort of fruit but never give raisins or grapes as they are poisenous. Mine pick blackberries off the bushes in the summer too.

Try not to ever give cooked bones, no matter how big they are.

Mmm...I'm sure they'll love the raw rabbit.

[/ QUOTE ]Yup Tinker & Finn LOVE carrots... I just don't want to overload Fin with too much protein as the meat would be to compliment the biscuits... but I guess if I'm cutting out some biscuits then it is all relative.

another thing to consider is that meat and kibble are digested at different rates, so how about 1 all meat meal and one kibble meal? lol its a minefield is'nt it.

[/ QUOTE ]Arrrghhh!!

Well we were going to feed.... 2 x meals of Biscuits.... (Brekkie & Lunch) and then Meat & Biscuits for dinner.... hmmmm!!

I was under the impression that you should either feed all raw food or all cooked food to a dog, therefore if you are going to continue with kibble he will need cooked meat or tinned meat. It is to do with the digestive enzymes.

Will try and post some pics - though I'm a bit dumb with the whole computer thing I'm afraid and have zero patience. Will try over the Christmas hols when I have more time, also gotta try and get some of him when he is actually stood still!!

BARF - I thought this was a brand of dog food too - sorry Severnmiles - my excuse ... it was early in the morning!!! defo the best way to feed IMO.

Thanks Jackie36 for the protein ratios, my dog food is inbetween these so I will continue as before.

It's a minefield. The BARF people will promise you a well behaved, perfectly developed muscular dog, but so will the pet food manufacturers! I have always fed kibble, but am choosy and would never feed wheat to an adult dog, let alone a puppy. I am also lazy, and quite happy to open a tin of food and throw in some scraps for variety. My dog loves raw veg anyway, she hangs around the chopping board like a bad smell!

Why are you worried about too much protein?

[/ QUOTE ]As the breeder advised RR's suseptible to problems related to too much protein, as are alot of big dogs.

[ QUOTE ]
Yet any grain but rice is is bad for dogs.

What was the suggested diet?

[/ QUOTE ]He didn't suggest - he provided us with a biscuit that had very little protein in and was an adult food and TBH didn't have any vit/minerals in!!
