Mental block in regards to mares...what is wrong with me?

I'm definitely not a mare person, I've always clashed with them! Yet get on with bitches 1000x more than dogs.

I've always been a fan of geldings - all mine have been geldings, other than a few loans/schoolies that I've never really felt close to - and all the other animals have, by choice, been male. Then I bought a mare because she vaguely met the criteria, and, mostly, she was cheap.

Now I'm soppy about her. I got grumpy with someone at the weekend for calling her "that" horse, which I've literally never done with anyone (being, generally fairly sanguine about language and all that). She's not "that" horse, she's my little mare, and she's awesome. I feel protective about her in all sorts of absurd ways :o

Oh, and this ^^ in spades :o
Kira's an odd one, but she pulls on my heartstrings in an extraordinary way. I felt the same about Millie but Kira had an extra layer of underdogness (and at the time I picked her up, I was also under a huge amount of pressure to get rid of her pronto, and surrounded by alot of negativity. But I knew she was a goodun!)

Ah, but you have perhaps yet to meet "The Mare". Once you have a one-to-one with a mare, and it won't be every mare, but The Mare, you won't ever be as close to a horse again. I love my boys, and have had the very best of stallions and geldings, but NOTHING will ever beat the true, all-encompassing loyalty of a truly great mare.

Very true and very well put :).

I have to have geldings as I'm on a geldings only yard and don't want to move. That suits me though as I've never really got on with mares. My friend had a mare while we were teenagers and their bond was incredible, she'd do anything for my friend but she couldn't stand me. She'd turn into complete loon as soon as I got on her and dumped me (usually on the other side of a fence) on so many times, I can't believe I kept getting back on her!

I wouldn't say any of mine have been particularly soppy. M is quite aloof but very tolerant, A isn't quite so tolerant but a bit more cwtchy. Eb thought he ruled the world and allowed me to have a relationship with him on his terms - which sometimes meant cwtches and sometime meant simply delivering his food.

I have just bought my second horse- a mare, after saying I would not have a mare! But something in her advert and during her viewings just made me want to build a bond with her. She's very quirky and opinionated but is also very honest- if you ask her to do something she does it and seemingly remembers for next time. She's a work in progress and very different to any horse I've spent time with but she's working her way into my heart.

Although my gelding likes to give kisses and will call for you he's not a big lover of fuss, where as she will have cuddles and seems to rely on you to know everything is okay than he does.
