My girl is micro chipped already but she is not freeze marked. One of my friends from down the yard has texted me tonight saying that she is going to ring up about getting her daughters little cob mare freeze marked. She is worried about the recent apparent thefts and known attempted thefts around our way.

She has asked me if I want to get Cropi freezemarked. I really don't know, she is obviously very distinctive anyway so I am hoping that thats a deterant in itself.

Do you think that its a deterent????

Thanks

Your horse (assuming its the one in your sig!) is obviously very recognisable which will probably be a deterant itself, but if you want to be extra safe then get her freeze marked too.
I was gonna get my boy freeze marked, but they only freeze mark greys on their shoulder and I didn't want it to be seen when i ride!

I have 2 horses freezemarked AND microchipped, one horse just microchipped and a mare with fol at foot, neither of which have either

I hope to have the mare and foal microchipped v. shortly, and I will be freezemarking the two older ones this summer and the foal as soon as I am able to.

Sorry to be rude, but what a stupid excuse. You want it to be seen, at anytime.

OP, yes, get it done, so worth it.

Not true - my friend had her grey marked on his back just last year. With greys they do have to leave the stamp on longer to make the area bald rather than white hair - she couldn't ride her horse for a week and then used a cotton numnah for a couple of weeks until it had healed.

Erm - the point is that the mark IS seen - it's a deterrent!

The microchip is great for an instance where identification needs to be confirmed for certain - often 2 horses can look similar to the unfamiliar eye.

But a freezemark is a visible deterrent and should deter would be theives in the first place, we hope.

My vet is doing a microchip offer of £13.99 if you book in June - it is really aimed at cats and dogs but as it doesn't say this on the poster I have booked in my pony and will take him to the vet in the trailer to have it done.

Hiya

When I first got my pony he had neither and like you I couldn't decide. I got him microchipped when he had his jabs, and then about 3 weeks ago he was freezemarked on his saddle area. The hardest choice I had to make was where to get it done, I spoke to the lady who has him on loan and she said she would prefer his saddle area done so we went for that.

My horse who is grey will be getting done in about 4 weeks and when the vet comes to the yard will also be getting microchipped.

At the end of the day it is up to you, some people don't like the idea of freezemarking, but it is a visible deterrant and a microchip isnt. I have heard that alot of vets, abbotoirs etc do not check for microchips. For my peace of mind they will have both, which some may see as a complete waste of money but it gives me piece of mind that hopefully mine will be kept safe.

I've only just brought my mare and was debating which to get done too, so i've decided to get her microchipped when she gets her vaccinations done tomorrow (our vets is also doing a special offer at the moment- only £10 so no excuse not to really) and will be getting her freeze marked soon, especially aftre reading everyone's comments.
