Well well he's signed out but I am not microchipping him, TBH the whole thing is farce. Even with dogs it is always the non chipped ones that turn up on Facebook etc and my dog has never had his chip scanned since it was put in! So how will they tell unless you are competing and then you would be law abiding anyway! It makes no sense to back date it.

agree, what is the point. like a good citizen i got a passport for my horse when the rule came in which cost me money,i lost her 2 years ago but if she was still alive there is no way i would be paying out more money to have her microchipped. where are the passports those who breed literally thousands of coloured cobs? who is going to enforce yet another rule? backdating it makes no sense at all...

This. The problem with abandoned horses, is not usually veterans but the results of irresponsible breeding. I hope if DEFRA plan to enforce this Trading Standards with be out in force with m/chip readers.

DEFRA new passport regulation is clearly designed by someone who has never issued a passport. The idea that Local Government or DEFRA is going to fund proactive checks on if a horse has a microchip or not is living in cloud cookou land. Is anyone going to call a vet out who has to check the identity of the horse from the passport and is then going to report you to Trading Standards. It is also about cost as only vets can chip in the UK this has forced the cost up in the rest of the EU anyone properly trained can chip and costs are about 10 Euros. DEFRA say the cost will be limited as you can get your vet to do it on their regular visit if a horse has survived 20 years in good health you are unlikely ever to call the vat out. With 8 horse a once a year vet call out is bad news. The other nasty is for change of ownership you have to return the passport to the original issuer. If it is lost in the post you will have to pay for a duplicate or replacement passport. If you have a KWPN horse this would have to be returned to holland. The other stupid idea is that all blank stocks of passport inserts have to be numbered and if any are lost you have to report it to DEFRA this is a unnecessary financial burden on passport issuers and could only be dreamed up by a bean counter in DEFRA.

I wonder if vets will see this as a moneyspinner, and urge/force owners to chip their old horses

The regulation says "3) A veterinary surgeon who implants a transponder into an equine must ensure that the transponder displays a code that is unique to the transponder. " as the UK unlike other counties start their chips with the country code like 276 how on earth would he know if the code is unique

Both of mine are microchipped as they had to be for their trip to Ireland. Wasn't a bother, had them done with their boosters.

mine born after 2009 were chipped and as you say it wasn't a bother. However the rest of mine ie 5 horses born before 2009 were not required to be chipped. I did however have to pay for passports for them when they were introduced. It is a bother now that I will have to pay for them to be chipped and no doubt pay again for their passports to be updated. As most are retired and never move out of the yard gateway this will be a total waste of money.

Microchipping horses will be like every other license etc. A bit like firearms certificates. The law biding ones amongst us will do it. Their animals, guns or whatever else don't normally cause a problem. The non law abiding ones won't bother. Those are more likely to be the horses abused, straying etc etc where ownership needs to be confirmed. As usual it will be one law for one and one for another.
