No riding for me this week :(

I did just book on to a dressage test riding clinic which is in December with the schoolmaster RS. I've never done this before and it's exactly the sort of thing I'd want to do with my own horse if I had one so pleased they put things like this on, plus something else to look forward to. Thinking I might go for Prelim so that when they run another in-house competition I might feel up to trying that, or to help me do a better job on the Intro!

Urgh we are swimming in it. Is this another Derbyshire-centric thread title! I need to stop doing that !!

Very muddy here in West Yorkshire!

Bo and I are planning a good long hack tomorrow and a TREC clinic on Sunday.

More hacking early next week and then a polework clinic on Wednesday.

Think I might need to clip him again already.

Today we are off to dressage club. We have a hot weekend here, I think we are in for a hot summer. I'm feeling happy/sad about the warmer weather. The easterly blows a gale in the mornings so you risk getting blown away riding early. Ho hum!

Tomorrow the farrier is coming early to shoe both horses, hoping I'll get a chance for a hack.

We had a great jumping lesson on Thursday, Henry is feeling really great and jumping super. Have a plan on how to spend the summer training and building confidence ready for next season. 5438E9D4-0601-453D-92B5-8AA024C4F499.jpeg

We went to a pole clinic last night. It was the first clinic Nova has been to since May and I wanted to get her out after spending so much in the last 5 months to get her comfortable. Despite a bit of an unhinged 10 minutes where she just felt like a ticking time bomb, she really settled. Apart from taking a disliking to a patterned pole and a dressage board, she was amazing and we even finished with a couple of canter poles. So much better than the last few outings.

Came to load her to come home and I think because it was dark, she misjudged her step and fell into the trailer. I checked her quickly when I got home and no grazes/heat/swelling but I will check her again today. A bit of a rubbish ending to such a good clinic but hopefully she is okay!

I had planned to hack today and tomorrow but obviously it depends on how she is.

Part one of our reverse CT went well - Chilli was very surprised when I asked him to go over a jump instead of around 🤣 and we had a very un-stylish but clear first round. The jump-off was over the same course and we were both a lot more confident, though I buried him in 7 (tbh I think flattening a cross-pole is more impressive than getting over it 🤣). Thankfully he’s filled out enough to fit Pocholo’s GP saddle.

A couple of hours now to chill then we’re heading off to dressage…

I'm still wiped out from covid, but managed to haul myself onto Blue yesterday, for the first time in three weeks, and go for a hack.

Our roads are normally... not great but survivable. You'll meet one or two numpties but the worst most people do is overtake you on a blind bend (where they're just going to smash themselves, not me). Unfortunately, the local pumpkin patches are now open, so the roads are full of townies concentrating harder on their satnav than on the actual road. Throw in the bad conditions - wet roads and low, bright sunlight - and it was absolutely terrifying.

My yard has an off-road shortcut from the main road to the yard, cutting out a road loop, that I generally avoid because it's overgrown, next to a ditch, and runs alongside fields where the horses like to gallop right up to the fence, snorting and sqealing. I was positively relieved to turn onto it yesterday.

I think I'll be staying off the roads until pumpkin season is over.

After getting a polite kick up the backside from my saddler (also a BHS coach and experienced rider) I have been really focussing on keeping Babycob in front of my leg and not babying him. I've got it nailed hacking where he turns into a spooky monster if I don't, but all goes downhill when I'm concentrating for a 5 min dressage test it seems. I'm annoyed with myself!

Never an issue away from home in lessons where I can use his adrenaline to my advantage but I must give off different vibes once I trot down that centre line and we revert to handbrake on and me nagging. The stupid thing is he scores ok because he's in a rhythm and I'm accurate but he feels bleugh.

BH went to a little pole/jump clinic. My first solo outing to a new place where I wouldn't know anyone since Mr Red died 11 weeks ago.

BH was a star. Went a bit green in the spooky arena, but that consisted of shrinking into himself a bit, no bad behaviour and jumped everything he was put at. He looked after his old mam!

Well that was pretty fab!! Nicola is the most inspirational woman. What a star. One rider tipped up in the grid arena and went home leaving a spare stable, so I hot footed home to get Lottie. Our instructors were given a freebie lesson to say thanks to them after camp lessons ended so I joined one of those. Also adopted @photo_jo from another camp who took a few pics for us! Thanks Jo.

Jumped the fence I went splat at. Hurrah. Nicola gave me fab advice to help when Lottie gets overly keen. Her eye is fantastic and she uses ear pieces so can give advice all the way in which was so helpful.

Didn;t think to get one with her when I was riding, but here she is with another of our instructors!

Lovely weekend.

A fab part two to our reverse CT day. Great result but the big thing was a relaxed and focused Chilli. I think more brain work and a double warm up will be the way forward! I can’t believe he’s 6.5yo and this is only his second competition outing, I had no idea he’d be such a hothead in the school.

He’s so lovely to take out though - loaded and travelled beautifully, lined himself up for me to get on, tried to take a 4’ stick into the warm up in his mouth 🤣. I think he’s been watching the yard’s labradors too much!

We had a really productive, light bulb lesson at dressage club. We used square turns to get Henry around my inside leg and suddenly he was sitting more, and then I added leg and it was smooth, easy, on the aides, round, it all just came together more. And I replicated it at home yesterday. I was also so much better with my outside rein which is notoriously wishywashy. So I am very pleased! And it wasn't even too hot, but yesterday was hot enough to go swimming at the beach (without the horse this time!).

Moved to the new yard, very daunting! Buzz walked into the stable and started eating his hay which is good. Went for a hack with his new field buddy yesterday then turned them out, he seemed fine and they get on well. He's quite tense but that's to be expected. Fingers crossed he settles well.

Went to a TREC clinic late yesterday afternoon. Few late meant it was just us and one other horse/rider.

Bo can be a bit hot and over excitable away from home, so I experimented with taking him for a short, fast hack in the morning. Worked really well and he was super chilled and easy to ride in the afternoon.

We made huge progress on all the obstacles and even cantered under the 'branches' for the first time. Also introduced him to neck reining.

We both really enjoy these clinics. Good to get his little Fell brain working. 😀
