So what else would I want to do on bank holiday weekend than go on a road trip down to Hartpury for a two day show :D. We've only done one stay away show before so we were going for some more championship experience, but I was hopeful we wouldn't embarrass ourselves too much :o.

Thankfully Topaz seems to be ok staying in strange stables these days but does still carry a bit of internal stress, so hopefully the more we stay away the more confident she will get.

Up early for our first test M69, and we warmed up well, keeping things simple and just working on rhythm and suppleness. Into the test and erm well yeah... lots of changes and spooking happened :o:o:o. Topaz was a little bit worried about life, the entrance, the judge, the trade stands, the photographer, etc  and when a Topaz is worried and also in canter what else can she do but pop a change in, I think it must sooth her :o. Came out had a giggle, bless her cotten socks, and popped her away until the afternoon. There is no evidence of this test thankfully but whilst perusing the pro pictures there is a suspicious looking canter picture which looks very flying changy .

Back out for E53 and this time in the less scary arena not near the trade stands! So I was feeling quite confident maybe for this one :D. However this time the audience were out to get her :o, which meant I had to work quite hard to keep her attention and the tense head wobble made an appearance in the canter (contact/tension issue we're working on and it's mostly gone until we get very tense). Topaz also managed to sneak another attempt at a change after our first medium canter, which I did feel was fairly unnecessary! Video of this one, please try not to be too critical I am definitely not perfect and know there is lots to work on :o.

Managed a not too shabby 66%, which I thought was a fairly fair score :).

Gave her a bath and let her have a mooch about for some sneaky grass.

Even found some jumps to stare at

Watched the evening music classes which was fab, especially little Corstan Rouge Trader! Then discovered that I had been wrong in my smug expectation that all my classes were outside and that my next elementary class was in the big, scary, frighteningly fancy looking indoor , my friend countered this new found discovery by providing lots of pimms :D. So another super early morning for the arena walk.

Having a little ride round in the dark in the warm-up indoor to check this wasn't too scary either:

Made her pretty and decided blinding with bling would be our only hope now ;).

Then onto our next medium, the not at all tricky M75.... Warmed up tried to cement our counter canter back in, which worked until a another horse got a little close so I gave her a pat and she changed :D, I mean when has a pat ever signified a flying change! However into the test and I felt parts were quite nice if a little fragile to start, but then we got a change in the first counter canter which was my fault for the positioning on the circle. Next counter canter I felt was a touch more Topaz than me :o, she seemed to be having a chat with the horse in the arena next door, who I feel must have been egging her on  :o. So we got change, I said woah, Topaz said noooo, I said no really, so Topaz stuck her head in the air trying to turn round to glare at the horsey who had clearly told her this would be a good move, I said no come on forward and back into canter, Topaz ran backwards a little to try and get the other horses attention, then gave up and accepted forwards into counter canter :o. What was that about not being embarrassing :o. Video to give you all a laugh, poor Topaz she was enjoying her changes whilst trying to put up with me :o.

Managed to get into the 60's with this medium for a 64%, which for a championship show I'm still chuffed with!

So onto the final test, by this point all hope of placings and prizes a far distant thought :D, our only aim now was a test which contained NO FLYING CHANGES! It was also roasting, warm-up was a little varied from good work, flat work (too hot for Topaz's) to tense, so I was not feeling much hope! Into the holding ring, and we couldn't even do a full lap as everything ate Topaz's apparently :o, so gave up agreed to go before my time, kicked on and trotted our socks off into the arena. Tried to keep holding her hand and give her confidence and maybe because it did feel a little cooler in the big arena, Topaz felt the most relaxed she had for the whole weekend :D. Maybe she was by this point knackered and couldn't be bothered spooking anymore but I'm going with she was finally starting to relax . Head wobble was still in attendance, but no, not even a sniff of one, flying changes happened :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D. The judge must have thought I was crazy for grinning on the VIG line with a head wobbly Topaz and a varying canter rhythm, but little did she know that our only aim was not to have a flying change ;). Video in two parts as my phone had a wobbly moment of its own :D.

We only managed our highest score of the weekend with an excellent 67%!!!!

So no placings for us overall, but I am really pleased with our progress through the weekend! Topaz doesn't find things like this easy so any improvements we can inch towards I'm pleased :), plus we survived the scary internal indoor!!!!

Well done for surviving the indoor! the outside arenas always look less than ideal to me for dressage, Mike gets distracted by a leaf so the idea of attempting a test with more than white boards and a car to spook at ...

Oh fabulous, fantastic achievement to get there and like you say, very good experience for you both. She looks lush. Maybe you should just straight up the levels so she can do more FCs :)

Well done. :D

You're both looking fab and I love the 'if we don't dazzle them with our riding, we'll blind them with our bling' - may have to borrow it the next time I'm out. ;)

 Trust me we have been there with the spooking, but gradually she is starting to trust me more and let me ride her! I'll have to dig out our test from the Petplan champs two years ago, she has improved massively and if we can do it anyone can! Still thought the indoor would be a big ask though so was very impressed with her :).

Noooo she is not doing any changes in a test until she listens  Adv Med is not on the cards until 2017! Currently we either have her doing them ad-hoc by herself or if I ask for them launching in the air or late behind or all of the above, we are not 'quite' test ready ;).

Well done. :D

Definitely go with that our scores were much better the second day, which can only be thanks to the added bling! :D

It sounds like you made good progress even if you didn't worry the winners! Well done on keeping a lid on her naughtiness. What's your next target with her?

Haha thanks, was a little surprised how far off the placings I was considering it was angled for the amateur grass-root riders, the medium class on the Sunday was won with 76%!

Though it was definitely good practise for her, we're off for Petplans at Medium next, end of this month at Northallerton and then October I think at Warren farm. No idea how we'll do mind and as BD have changed the rules at least twice this week no idea how people will qualify or even what it will mean next year for us, but hey live in the moment right?

but hey live in the moment right?

Only way to stay sane at the moment in BD land, I think!

Well done on keeping a lid on her, and having a good recovery after each wobble. That big indoor is such a challenge for some horses - Kira hates it too so we'd have had a horrid time in there :o I wish I could have come to watch.
Shame about the final results, it sounds like some people were a bit naughty about the rules. HOpefully they will sort that for next time. Sounds like it was a great show though. Good luck for your AFs :)

It's quite crazy, I think all BD need to do now is stop adding retrospective rules on choices made and people will be happy, or I could say I LOVE the new changes as now I will be one of the lucky few that didn't do music or PL's yet and so will have silver ALL to myself muahaha .

She's not a bad sausage really, despite the slight strop in M75, I think she was just getting cross at keep being pulled up and then combined with being distracted made for a ahem 'ugly' moment :o. She blew me away with how she handled the indoor so super chuffed, maybe we should be trying more for Winters after all .

There's already been a freestyle winner proved to have been ineligible :(, sad people can't read the rules or be happy with the championship routes they already have and do well in, but hey ho we went for character building reasons ;).

Well done on those scores and I love her sparkly plaits :)

:D We love them too and she didn't even itch them out in-between classes !

Thought it was you on the BD forum though knew it was quite a long way from home for you. Topaz has made so much progress and sounds like a good weekend. Had to laugh at your BD has changed the rules at least twice this week - I have absolutely no idea what we can do or can't do yet next year, basically not competing other than finals at present until I know what points mean! Good luck with your petplans.

Took about three and a half hours so not too bad, will definitely go back if they run it again!

The rule changes are bonkers, and it's an uneasy feeling competing this year when you have no idea if the choices made now will have unforeseen cobsequencies when they dream up the next amendments...

haha, budge over, I'm still in silver so you can't have it all to yourself

No way you at least have the native champs us cart horses have nothing so need silver just for us ;).

What a lovely happy report, well done you and Topaz, who looks absolutely stunning by the way, I LOVE the blingy plaits! Can't watch the videos as away and have very slow Internet, but look forward to seeing them when I get back.

Those are very spooky arenas. Monty would agree with Topaz - he found them quite overwhelming! Well done for fab scores!

Ah I'm sure she'll be pleased as she wasn't impressed with my 'man up they won't eat you' response to her spooking :D. Hopefully we will have a report from you and Monts soon?? :)

I stand by the if you cannot do it well, blind the judge with bling and then they will be distracted away from the naughtiness ! Many people might not be quite as jolly about her antics, but despite the spooking she IS getting more rideable when tense so I'm still really pleased with our progress.

Really well done. Love seeing the dressage reports from you. Topaz is a lovely mare and you have done well training her. :)

Ah thank you, it is sometimes the blind leading the blind but we muddle through and still have our sights set on a tailcoat :o.
