Got an email from my mother last night: "I hope you had a nice rest over the bank holiday."
...erm, nope, resting is for wimps!

Started out with a lesson with Kira on Friday. I was really looking forward to it because (a) the last one was cancelled as trainer had the lurgy, and (b) I had 2 friends tagging along so I could get some video! :D

Trying to nudge Kira up from being an elementary horse that can go sideways & do a change, to a horse that is really working Advanced Medium, with the associated increase in engagement, responsiveness, balance etc. At home we've done a lot of work on infrontofthelegness, answering the aid immediately rather than whatever the welsh version of mañana is ;) Plus lots of work on being adjustable - accepting the compression required in collection without just having a meltdown. I feel like we're getting there so it was so nice to see on the video :D

Started out looking at the trot work - getting her to tuck her hindlegs underneath and then stay engaged when ridden forward into a more working trot. This makes her feel much more uphill - quite an ask with those short front legs! Then we did the same thing in canter - a short canter that is quick off the ground, moving into a bigger canter that stays engaged and balanced. Alternating between the 2, little look at the changes and half passes while we were at it.

trot (sorry can't embed them all, will only let you do 3!)

I don't have a lot of early video but this was her third time in the school, in Oct 2014
This footage doesn't *quite* illustrate how awful the canter was, but I think she's quite a different ride now :p

Top cob!

Saturday was Millie's first "proper" showing outing, for a SSADL veteran class. Ohhh, how weird it feels being a numpty again. There were RIHS qualifiers in the morning so the lorry park was full of people who Do Showing Properly and there was I, trying to pull myself together in my bodged tack & grubby dressage breeches.

Miscalculated the timing - when it said the afternoon classes would start after 2, I didn't expect them to mean after 3.30... so Millie and I were a little bit switched off by the time we went into the ring as they had closed the warm up arena to run the inhand classes in there. Another error, I lined up so I was last to do an individual show which meant she was *really* switched off when it was our turn, plus I didn't really ride very well so we fluffed it a bit. However, still placed 2nd overall and the first place had already qualified, so we are through to second rounds. I was also given a talent spotting card thingy which seems to let us through to another show in the autumn... I'll figure this all out at some point. Apparently I should have picked up a sash for that (a sash!! They are like gold dust in dressage land!) but being a newb I didn't know. Ho hum.

I had hoped to do another class but as it was getting so late I had to just dash home to get to Hartpury for the gala evening :(
Useful day out though, I feel like I learnt a few things which we can apply to the next show next weekend - Veteran Horse Society spring festival - good to not be going in there completely clueless! We're booked onto a TSR showing clinic but it's not til the 5th May so we will just muddle along until then :o

Sunday was a day of hacking and riding other people's horses...

Monday! and a trip out for Kira to a long arena, for us to run through a freestyle floorplan. It's one I had for another horse but I thought I'd see if she could do it, to save me the brainache of devising another one. I tinkered with the music a bit on Sunday so Monday was the debut. Sadly no video, i was all set up on the tripod but the damn thing turned itself off. I could have wept after an hour of practicing what is a slightly challenging floorplan... but that's life! :D
Her canter speed is a tad slower than the last horse so whereas the original plan was to have 2 lots of simple changes, there's really only time for 1 set... the others will have to be flying changes or we'll run over time. Which means Kira will be dancing at Advanced Medium :eek3:

This is more than a little frightening, there is no nice safe bronze section at AM music, not even Silver, it's gold or bust apparently :eek3: Nevertheless, at least one leg is thrust into the brave pants, and we are entered for Burrows Court next week. Trying to schedule another practice later this week so we will be a little more prepared.

After that revelation, I should have just gone home and put my feet up as i was more than a little weary (having also been teaching and ridden YOs horse over the weekend), but Millie had been in the box all day and needed a run ;) so I cleared the school a bit and decided to have a bit of fun. She's feeling really well and we've been having a laugh teaching each other tempi changes. It's been the best thing for her rehab from surgery last year, it was apparent at last vet check that there were still some adhesions catching now and then but doing loads of canter work has just helped so much, she is totally sound.

Just for giggles, we had 4 twos in the rain yesterday afternoon - only second attempt at this so I'm really pleased with her & can overlook the wobble. Having to react this fast has really helped with the 3s and 4s, which are now almost rideable  and looking more through, and it's also made me ride in a more committed way. I've booked her in for a lesson next month with the trainer who gave me the idea... hoping she will be more established and I'll have stopped leaping up her neck :o Had a little go at a canter zig zag which had me in fits of giggles as too much to coordinate, but after a few attempts we were nearly there. Life in the old dog yet.

brilliant report, well done they are both looking amazing, love reading about your lovely welsh girls, gives me real inspiration to try harder and crack on with our dressage and flatwork ( although we are nowhere even near your standard !!)

All looking fabulous! Clever Kira cob, it all sounds so exciting for you guys at the moment!

Millie is looking amazing, sounds like she's going to do well at the showing malarkey :).

thanks everyone :) was a fun weekend, both are out enjoying the sun on their backs today :)

It feels really exciting, I just hope we aren't heading for a fall, I'm fed up of springtime injuries and disappointment... let 2017 be the year that breaks the cycle, please :( M feels fab, I got physio friend to come and look at her and she said she looks better muscled than she has done for a good while. Still got too much grass tho :o

well done. I love watching your videos from AM dressage

they're a great team there, I am so lucky to live close enough to go regularly :)

Bloomin fantastic :)

Thank you for posting the videos, we can all learn so much from watching others. I especially liked the canter video, looking brilliant and I love how he describes what to do :)

Gosh, your two girls are just super!! Really exciting times ahead for Kira, you should be so proud! Looking forward to the next update :)

Ooh lovely Kira is just goooooorgeous. Couldn't stop watching her fab blonde locks wafting about as she floats around in that video. Lovely to watch you both.

Shame about the loss of sash, I reckon you def need to get it posted to you. How else are you going to make up the relevant cushion/corkboard display to show your showing prowess?! I went to a TSR clinic which was really useful. There is def a lot of ring craft going on, which mostly passed me by I have to confess, but I could see how people get into it when they Do Showing Properly. And a whole new world of rules and qualifiers for you, cos life is just too boring otherwise eh?! Hee.

thanks, yes he makes it all ultra simple which is great, because K is very capable but gets her brain in a knot if it's not made simple ;) don't we all?!

Couple more clips if interested then,

Oh jeez, I feel like such an idiot, I just don't understand what's going on, where we are supposed to go, what we're meant to do or what happens at the end. Duhhhh. Pinning all my hopes on the clinic to fill in the gaps :D My showing guru :wink3: (no pressure Alex Hyde!!) tells me that the thing we've qualified for requires the wearing of a top hat, lol, as it's an evening performance. Pah! Hopefully I'll be a bit more savvy by then :p

And thanks, I think Kira's rather pretty too, strange little barbie horse! she's getting her summer coat through so is less pink now :D

ETA it's Millie's 13 year loaniversary today, can't quite believe so much time has passed although while I was putting together a little photo collage it did remind me how much we've done together. She's out in a new paddock today stuffing herself to mark the occasion

Oh god its been a while since I was properly into the showing game , always check with the organisers ;) I'm adding this as I know the rules on strapless hats is still show dependent!

I'll just take everything I own packed into the lorry, and then do a superman-speed-change when I see what everyone else is wearing! So far there's no additional info forthcoming so talk about being in the dark :D

Lol you now see why I think dressage is 'easy' compared to showing even with changing the rule structure every year, BD have nothing on the smoke and mirrors not written down anywhere rules of showing .

yes, 100%. really felt out of my depth on saturday!! I was glad OH had tagged along to keep me company because otherwise I might well have just abandoned it after the big delay and gone home :D and that was just one class :p Ho hum, always good to keep pushing your comfort zones I guess, though tbh I think Kira doing AM freestyle is more pushing than is really necessary at this stage :p

 You'll get the hang of it, plus the chance of really lovely rosettes and sashes is much higher in showing :).

Topaz has started changes bootcamp, I really think we got a properly awesome clean one last night, need to go and get proper eyes on the ground for them now I think... Kira is going to rock her AM freestyle, how many hours away from Manchester are you?

lol, presumably in most cases you get given the sash rather than being supposed to know the secret rule of 'go and collect it but we won't tell you that there is one'. Oh and the prize, but it's the sash I was more bothered about, hehe.

Can't beat eyes on the ground at this stage. Actually with both of mine I couldn't always feel in the beginning, whether they were correct or half a stride late behind. It's clear now, because they can both do them with a soft back which transmits the feeling better. I was pleased that Gareth Hughes basically said the same at the BD convention last year as that made me feel a lot less useless - I'm usually pretty good at picking up a feel but often would review video footage of M in the past and think we had a clean change that wasn't :(

We have 2 mirrors at the yard now so I often start by riding straight into the mirror for a change *just* to be sure... looking sideways at them doesn't work for me as I forget what I'm doing and either miss it as we sail past, or screw up the timing. Any scope for arena hire with a mirror?

Kira is either going to rock it or it'll be a massive disaster I reckon, don't think there'll be much in the middle! We're quite a way away, lol, I'm 30 mins west of hartpury :p

Yes you definitely normally get the sash in the ring, but see smoke and mirrors ;).

Yep I'm completely rubbish at feeling a late behind change, but we had two last night that felt different so I'm 'hoping' they were good . Hmm might be an idea about mirrors will have to investigate as the only problem is they tend to be indoors and she doesn't like indoors, but then that would be killing two birds with one stone really!

No, no talk of disasters!! Hmm just a bit far to come for cheerleading then...

They're both looking on great form! I love watching little Kira's progress, she's come such a long way. Good luck with the AM freestyle!!

Great progress and they are looking really good. Well done on the showing successes too!

Quick note, you can now do AM FSM at silver (they started that this year) so you don't need to leap into the gold section (not to say that the silver section isn't full of pros but slightly less daunting than gold!)

thanks, all of the schedules just have one section on both BD website and the venue website :( so guess they haven't caught up yet.
anyway I just left a note to the entry sec saying I hadn't a clue so please put me in the lowest section available :p tbh it's kind of not relevant as I don't have very high expectations
