Has anyone tried this or similar?

Am thinking about it for myself. Was suggested by my instructor earlier in the year, and again by a friend at the weekend. Have had a complete regression in confidence in the last few weeks, and ended up retiring on course at Bicton after some very questionable riding caused runouts at fences we are more than capable of jumping (and he jumped perfectly when I got my head together and rode properly).

I have some trauma with XC/jumping in general, but have been doing very well, and have been more confident this year than I’ve felt for a long time. And we’ve had results to prove it! But one, unfortunately timed, bad session and all the wheels immediately fell off. It’s improved a little again over the last few weeks, but again, one harder question that worried me and I fell apart. P is so sensitive that he takes everything I do as an aid, and will only do so much hand holding/tolerating of bad riding.

I’m not generally a “nervous” rider. I’ll bomb around all day, get on almost any horse. Spooking/bucking don’t bother me. My big thing is a fear of the horse being hurt, hence the fear with jumping…

Recommendations welcome! I don’t want to spend thousands of pounds, but I’m happy to spend a reasonable amount if it’s going to help! I’m based SW but I’d probably prefer something that can be done remotely because I don’t have masses of spare time available. My instructor is fantastic, and he has helped me improve enormously, but this isn’t his speciality

Might be worth contacting a Centre 10 coach as first port of call - it's what they specalise in, and some offer off horse sessions https://www.centre10.com/ .

They also regularly advertise for riders to be guinea pigs on their residential non-ridden courses just in case it's something you fancy doing :)

My dressage instructor is on their list, and she’s lovely but it’s not quite the right thing for what I need.

I’ll have a look for non ridden sessions, as really not wanting a different instructor at this point. I am incredibly happy with my jumping instructor, he’s transformed my riding in the last 12mo, I just wonder whether some off horse sessions would help even more

Not sure where you are - Devon? But Charlie Unwin does some free ones as part of his centre 10 coaches programme and actually I found them really helpful. I am much better at dealing with failure and just doing stuff even if it’s 90% and not 100%. I am also lucky in that I have really good friends so can off load all the mental spaghetti I have running through my head which is usually a mix of self doubt, lack of self belief in myself, perfectionist and control freak.

I have had some proper ones and the most useful thing was talking while walking courses! My most recent one in 2022, I was disappointed with the session but I suspect I wanted a magic answer which solved it all and I had too much going on in my life that I couldn’t change and it was impacting me so I just pulled the plug on riding until the other stuff settled.

The best thing I have ever paid for was Jo Cooper and TFT. So weird but I was having extreme anxiety about riding and competing and could barely sj as had a feeling of chronic dread and crying about doing it. One session with Jo and amazing. As soon as I sit on a horse to compete I am calm and just get on with it. Even nearly 20 years later it still in place and works. Off the horse I am a nightmare as didn’t work on that! but it’s kind of comforting to sit on the horse and be calm competing. I am actually far better competing than training now probably because of the session with Jo.

I had a shit Bicton as well!!

Yes, about 25mins from Bicton (so at least we didn’t drive hours to have a shit day!) Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll have a look. Do you know if Jo Cooper is still working? Her website doesn’t seem to have been updated for a while

I think I’m probably similar to you from the sounds of it! I have a great friend who regularly receives long ramblings/unpicking of mistakes, but it doesn’t help me in the moment. I kind of know WHAT happens and WHY it happens, but I’m stuck on how I can change it.

I think my recent wobble was because I had a lot of stuff going on outside of horses and was just generally stressed and burnt out. Timing was terrible, wish I could have waited until after Bicton to have everything fall apart 😅

Am kicking myself, because if we’d jumped a DC we’d have qualified for badminton, he’s more than capable of that, he jumped one round a bigger and harder course there in August! but strangely not as upset as I thought I’d be. I guess because I chose to retire rather than being eliminated? And because I think the runouts are me, I don’t have to worry about something being wrong with him (although he’s getting a full MOT too just in case)

I'd say solutions-focused hypnotherapy might be a good one for you. But then I would, as it works really well for me, I can move forwards without all the reliving of past issues that some other therapies do.

I bought a voucher for a friend who was having a tough time mentally and she said it helped. I obviously didn't ask the details of their session.

This lady comes highly recommended but you can read about her on FB and her website. She supports local event riders too so is well versed in the sport.

My friend was in England so location isn't a factor to using her services.

Thr link is legit

You could look at Karl Greenwood, I did a one day ridden course with him & followed up with a 3 month online course, have to say having tried a lot of other options this has really helped.

Ditto with Badminton except in my case I had to WD so didn’t get to sj final day due to a sore horse.

I am not sure about Jo. But the method worked for me brilliantly. Just rewired my brain.

I do all my worrying about if they are 100% before the event so at the event if I am there I am usually satisfied they are fine.

Also, not coaching as such but @Ambers Echo has written a fantastic book. I bought it to be supportive, not because I had any specific worries, but it's fantastic. A lot of it is very applicable to life stresses outside of horses too. I highly recommend.

A friend read a book by Jane Savoie and wouldn't stop praising it. She gifted me a copy but it's still on my TBR pile. However she was really enthusiastic about it which was out of character, so it might be worth a read too.
