I've got a swollen ankle which has led to pain in the muscle that goes up the outside of my left calf (can't remember the names of the muscles sorry!) - it was originally a running injury but I've noticed that riding seems to make it worse? I'm guessing I over-pronate when my foot is in the stirrup (that's basically too much weight on the outside edge of the foot)

Has anyone experienced this & does anyone have any tips on getting rid of it? Going to see my GP tomorrow for some Naproxen & I'm pretty sure he will say rest it and ice it..... but of course I want to keep riding 😊

Better to rest up than continue riding and causing a stress fracture, a week of riding or so will be much better than 6 weeks in a cast if you cause a stress fracture

Yes, agree with JenTaz, why risk longer term damage for a couple of weeks out of the saddle? Let it heal.

I have achilles tendinitis and when it's flaring up, riding definitely exacerbates it.

In March I broke my ankle in 3 places and dislocated it. In theory I'm not even supposed to be walking unaided yet but I'm back in the saddle, albeit only at walk. But I elevate and ice it for hours a day. It really does help, especially with the swelling. I got a couple of gel packs that you can put in the freezer. So bottom line is that I agree with your doctor :)

If its a recurring injury because you over pronate all the time, ask to be referred to a biomechanics department. I do this too, and it was causing me to basically sprain my ankle each time I put my foot down.

I was given shaped (like a wedge!) insoles to put inside my boots which really helps!

I over pronate really badly (ankle rolled inwards, too much weight on the inside of the foot - this is much more common than suprination which is too much weight along the outside of the foot).

I reckon it's probably due to too many sprained ankles as a nipper when I was taking dancing classes (and then not looking after them - mind you, no one did physion and/or proprioception on kids ankle injuries in the 70/80s ;) )

If I'm walking long distance, or (god forbid) running, I have specific stability trainers which correct the foot fall... mind you, this normally shunts the pain from my ankles and knees to my hips and lower back due to the change in my gait. But in the short term it's much more comfortable.

In the meantime, if you do want to ride - go stirrupless? (for short meanders if safe, or in the school?)

Sports physio then laser or therapeutic ultra sound whichever is apporiate .
Then get yourself off to a podiast and get some insoles made to fit you for running .

My brother went to a place where they measured his gait/weight distribution when running and then made insoles for his trainers, maybe something like that might help?

i got a quote for that, cheapest being £190 and they don't last more than 6 months if you run 3x a week or more :(

I got mine done at sweat shop £45 (just the insoles not the trainers) definitely find they support my feet more!

I have unstable ankles and have damaged my peroneal tendon on one foot and it has been giving me pain for quite a while. Recently , and after trying lots of other things and having physio, I got one of these. It is fantastic, I really recommend it. I'm going to get one for my other leg now and I'll be superwoman. I can get my boots on too, unlike some other braces I tried.

I'm one that doesn't take 'stop' easily! I've tried to run through injury then made it worse, walk when I should have had my leg up and, of course, ridden when I really shouldn't have. I listen to my body now and if I am asking myself whether or not I SHOULD do something when I am injured, then I probably shouldn't

The last 2 injuries I had I did this. The first was a slight sprain and some swelling to the top of my foot but I didn't question riding...if I could get my boot on - I was riding. The last time though was an acute sprain and I was in agony and the thought of riding didn't even cross my mind. I rested completely for 2 weeks then started riding again slowly - and running after 2 months.

It's always better to rest now for 2 weeks - rather than later for potentially months

These people sell the two braces that I have used for my broken wrist, both Aircast. Their service is excellent, arrives in two days.
