Misleading cross-breeds

I can't believe that people actually think that all cross breeds are easier to train than a pedigree, rediculous! I do understand that some breeds can take a bit more effort than some but I personally believe it is down to the owners. In other words it depends on how much effort they are prepared to put in to the training of any dog regardess of breed/type. I have a cross and a pedigree, they are both very obedient and their recall is exceptional, BOTH OF THEM! Neither go on leads, they both walk along side me when asked, they are walked through land with cows, sheep, horses and chickens and never chase or even look at them. (Must confess my springer/collie does try to round up my friends chickens because my friend allows her to). So just goes to show it is down to the owner not the breed.

totally agree. Owner and not the breed.

OMG! How can you say crossbreeds are better behaved?! Do you think pedigrees are so poor in their natures that they cannot be trained? How ridiculous!

The main thing is to health test and to explode the myth that crossbreeds are healthier than pedigrees. Health tested dogs are healthier than non health tested. End of story.

Totally agree. I love my little crossbreed but really, sweeping statements on either side of the purebred/crossbreed arguement don't do anyone any favours.
The first thing my obedience instructor said when she found out what cross I have was "oh good, a scent driven, stubborn dog" and TBH she wasn't far off the mark:rolleyes:
At the end of the day it is up to the individual to make a choice about what dog they want and a badly bred dog is a badly bred dog regardless of what breed its parents are. To justify your choice by making unproven generalisations about better health/trainability of either pure or crossbred dogs is just ridiculous.

With the exception of 1 dog (an ESS bitch) all mine have been crossbreeds, mostly from rescues. I find the prices of dogs nowadays is quite simply obscene and I'd much rather give that money to a rescue instead.

On the one hand, I'm glad that dogs are being cross bred a lot more now as I've always found it disturbing that some breeds of dog have to suffer in order to look a certain way. Dogs are supposed to be muddy and happy with their tongues hanging out and their paws wet from a good fun trip out not standing in a certain way, with fur that never sees a puddle or a cow pat to roll in, in case it gets spoiled before the next show. Sorry if anyone's offended by that but I feel very strongly that how a dog feels and behaves is much more important than how it looks.

On the other hand, I can't abide the dishonesty surrounding the naming of these dogs. I don't mind the names as such, I just think that they cover the fact that people are being mislead. I've never understood why a pedigree is 'more valuable' than a crossbreed or a mongrel anyway. All of mine have won something at some time or another (in obedience or agility or in some little fun class at an RSPCA fete).

I know a lot of show dogs/or should I say, pet dogs who happen to be shown, including international champions, we used to show ourselves, to suggest that all show dogs are somehow restricted from enjoying a full doggy life is wrong, certainly in my own breed and a lot of others.

The problem with these designer cross breeds is they mate pure breed dogs that haven't been health tested with anything. Rescues we went to one before we bought ours, mum had a stray for for 17 years before hand and we couldn't get a rescue as we worked strange hours and we were told it would unsettle the dog. But where are these rescue dogs coming from and why are a lot of them cross breeds? The questions go on and it's a shame.

You obs have little understanding of the true problems we face with " alot more of all this cross breeding then" because the unsuitable breeds being crossed are creating far worse monstrocities that we have ever seen before;) and creating far more rescues. Because alot get discarded of when the true monstrosity develops at 6 months or the behavioural issues of 2 massively mis matched breeds begins to rear it's ugly head (take that from someone who is knee deep in rescue)

I think most people wouldn't have a problem with the breeding of a well though out pair of different breeds, with a specific result (which has a reasonably high likelihood of occurring) and using appropriately health tested parents.

The problem with a lot of these crosses is that the breed combinations are ill thought out, the parents aren't health tested and they're just churned out to make a quick buck.

Unfortunately a lot of people misunderstand the term hybrid vigour and assume that anything which is a cross of multiple breeds is guaranteed to be healthier.
