I am preparing to compete after a loooong break. I mean, when I last competed, I needed a tweed jacket for 100 and below ?and even my blue jacket is like a little dress.

I will be unaffiliated to start with and I know I can use my old kit (already have for one show) but I am aware that I looked like a granny.

I think my breeches and boots are still 'in fashion' and have bought a leather covered hat for dressage and show jumping (as opposed to a skull cap). I have bought a new fancy short whip too, for BS compliance.

I have a couple of other questions though...

Shirts. I am old fashioned and used to always have a white shirt with stock. I recollect that I started to only have a short with collar attachment for BS, no tie. Do I still need the collar attachment for BS? Or, it seems that people just wear the shirt with a stand up collar on its own, top button showing.

Also, I always had white shirts, but some people had a coloured short with a white bib. These days, in the shops, shorts seem to be various colours, including patterned, no white bib. Is this acceptable in BS/BD, so see a different colour? Is it supposed to be hidden by a stock, or is a simple patterned/coloured short OK with just the stand up collar, no over collar attachment either. Is BS/BD different?

Gloves. They used to be black/dark blue, then 'light coloured' became compulsory. What is the current ruling on gloves?

Also, jackets. They seemed to be blue/black or tweed before, red only if a huntsperson. Now, the shops are full of different colours. What is the BD/BS ruling on that?

Finally, jackets. Mine are like little dresses, long bum coverage. In the one show I did, I stood out for being the only competitor in a dress! But then, in the shops, jackets don't seem quite as short as many people seem to be wearing. Are jackets going bigger again?

I have some cash spare to re-fit myself so I don't look like a relic, but don't want to buy something now that isn't BS/BD/BE compliant as, next year, we may do an assortment of them. I seem to think more is 'permitted' as in toes/stocks/not but I am a little confused as to how to generally fit in and not look like a relic. I am hoping my beaming smile may hode the wrinkles, and I have got the body back in shape!

As for the horse... I usually use a neck strap. I recollect that BD didn't allow them, then ruled that they did, after all, allow them. Then, I read that they were no longer allowed. Same with BE, I think? What is the ruling on them now for BE/BD/BS? The rest of the tack is very standard. Except... Tendon boots. I am having issues finding long enough straps. The ones easiest to change are the type where the straps start on the outside, thread through the inside and then fasten on the inside - I could simply lengthen the velcro straps. Then, I seem to recollect the type where the strap doubled back was disallowed by BS, but that *may* have been for back fetlock boots only? Are they still allowed?

My daughter does BE and BS. Basically anything appears to be ok for BS rider clothing-wise - pretty much any colour jacket and shirt combo and hardly any ties/stocks. Light grey breeches are very popular. No one seems to put their hair up so there are long, flowing ponytails which would have made her pony club DC shudder … They’re quite hot on the types of boots horses are allowed to wear but I’ve never bothered to check the rules as my daughter’s horse is only booted for xc. For BS as long as you stick sheepskin on pretty much every bit of tack you’ll fit in ?

For BE she makes a lot more effort - always wears a white shirt and stock for dressage and SJ phases, white breeches, navy jacket (novice level, but there was quite a bit of tweed at 100), dark gloves, hairnet. The jacket reaches to the top of her hips so not super short or dress-like … I’m pretty sure neck straps have to be attached to the saddle or breastplate for xc so you can’t just have an old stirrup leather flung round their neck

Can only speak for BD:
Gloves - blue/black/white/cream. I go for blue/black to match my jacket, as my hands are not still enough to wear white.
Jackets - just need to be a conservative colour. Blue/black are the most popular. But you will see the odd grey, maroon, green.
Shirts - unless at a championship you don't have to wear a jacket, you can wear just a shirt. Again needs to be fairly plain, but can be coloured. Must have sleeves if going jacketless (short or long). An American collar is fine if you don't want to wear a stock. In summer I am quite often in a short sleeve t-shirt, with waistcoat and stock. For winter I have an American collar shirt, with lace detailing and a navy jacket.
Im sure neck straps are allowed BD, but check. In BE I think they have to be attached to the saddle.
BD has become more relaxed over the years and is now more accepting of different colours. Saddle cloths can now also be a conservative colour, although most still opt for white

I'm afraid I'm not as much of a guru as I used to be on the rules but when I updated my competition wardrobe a couple of years ago to riding tights, a breathable, stretchy jacket (that can go in the washing machine!!!) and one of the non iron, stretchy and breathable shirts it was a revelation. I'm so much more comfortable competing and it's all so much easier to wash and use.

I will 'do' the rulebook if/when I get serious, for now I am grateful for the lowdown.

From what you all say, I would be OK in a pastel short with stand up collar but no extra collar attachment or stock, for BS defo and possibly BD too.

Love the idea of grey riding tights for BS. Presume cream/white for BD. Washable jacket, will defo have that, and am glad for blue gloves as I hated wearing white!

Thank you all!

Not our prettiest angle, but, I have cream breeches gloves and stock here. A blue jacket with a very subtle check from cavallo. I wear this for BD and BE. I've also worn it for unaffiliated SJ we haven't done any BS. Never felt out of place at any, although some of the get up for unaffiliated SJ made me feel a bit over dressed

I bought one of the super lightweight mesh show jackets yesterday afternoon, and wore it for 2 dressage tests and a SJ round this morning. What a joy, I think it's one of my best ever horsy purchases - highly recommend!

The one I ordered is a bum freezer!

For my age, my bum is OK to show, I think. Just did a triathlon so it is toned! It is mail order so, if it is awful, I can return.

So I now have boots (snaffled some 2nd hand Ariat Bromonts, only tried on and didn't fit previous owner, exactly my size), decent breeches from before (although I would prefer some with a phone pocket!), new Ariat pastel show shirt with stand up collar (in the sale yesterday), new hat, new navy blue gloves, new whip...

Good to go!

I have ordered some Velcro to lengthen the straps on horse's tendon boots. Can use an old spur strap to attach the neckstrap if required. He also has a decent bridle and 2nd hand jump saddle.

Good to go for him too!

It won't be immediate, we just got back from camp and have another camp in 2 weeks, then one 2 weeks after that! Then I plan on a bit of down time for him, shoes off job for a couple of months, then work him back up. That is the plan anyway. We may sneak in a couple of unaffiliated jobs in before the shoes come off.

I don’t do BS but I understand there was a chance to (horse) boot rules recently. Would be worthwhile checking.

I can’t tell you the difference mesh jackets make in summer. I would have literally died of heatstroke without it ?

I looooove my softshell navy Pikeur jacket. It’s so much comfier and cooler!

Last time I competed BD you had to wear white gloves but that was a couple of years ago.

I have a super stretchy lightweight stock shirt with a Velcro silk stock which is brilliant and looks much smarter than when I tried to tie my own…highly recommend!

The genius thing that I'm now using is a bib stock - from Buckover Equi-Bibs (https://www.facebook.com/Buckoverequibibs) - just a velcro attachment that takes less than 1 second to put on. I use it for BE, BD and BS and the best thing is is that you only even need a t-shirt underneath - so I don't actually need a show shirt. I do sometimes use a showshirt with stand up collar underneath it - but it isn't neccessary to do so.

Pic below is our hot weather kit - this was in 27 degrees on Sunday and wasn't overwhelmed with heat. Aubrion pull on riding tights are super super thin and stretchy - incredibly comfy, but still have belt loops, as I can't do without a belt. Buckover equi bib over a thin T-shirt, Pikeur stretchy washable jacket. I'm in a kids age 16 jacket, which is suprisingly alright on a 5'10 size 10 and is a lot cheaper. The mesh jackets are also nice, but couldn't find any that were long enough in the arms for me.

Also love my gatehouse ventilated hat - but think you said you're already sorted on hats.

For horse stuff - neckstrap is allowed BD, BS and BE. It is only FEI that have ruled against unattached neck straps.

Boot rules only apply to hind boots. Haven't seen many of those hook and loop tendon boots lately, think they're pretty outdated. I've got a pair of E-Up ones which are just velcro straps across, and one velcro strap down over them to secure. That's pretty minimal and quick. These would be a cheap equivalent version - https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/tendo...VGobVCh0pFwlZEAQYBSABEgI6l_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds.
