Modifying a grazing muzzle?

After a long dry period we have had quite a lot of rain recently, and as a consequence the grass is growing like mad.

As the grass now has some length to it (rather than being rather lichen-like), I thought I would try a grazing muzzle for my gut-bucket mare. However even after an hour wearing it (and I stayed in the paddock watching them) she never settled at all. and she was constantly clearing her nose. I'm wondering if she finds the muzzle a bit claustrophobic as it is quite enclosed around the whole nose.

Has anyone modified a muzzle by cutting "breathing holes" where the nostrils are?

That muzzle is much too small I'm afraid. There should be a lot more space around it. It must be very restrictive and annoying for her!

Echo others in that muzzle is too small for her. I had a similar muzzle with the sheepskin around the top but found the hole too small for my ISH and my other horse kept removing it so bought a greenguard muzzle. It has rubbed him but have put sheepskin on the areas where it did, but he's far happier in it and it's more effective, less hot and far less claustrophobic (although far more expensive well worth the cost!)

Hi Just to clarify, this is how it is advertised as fitting... in comparison I don't think mine looks overly small??? (sorry for being dense/confused - you just don't see horses with muzzles on in France, and don't have any experience)

Yours just looks a bit tight around her nose and especially in the heat will make her uncomfortable. This is the Greenguard one (en francais!) http://www.ardennesacheval.fr/testepourvous/museliere_grazing/museliere_grazing.htm and if you look at the photo in this one you can see that there is more space around the nose http://www.esprit-equitation.com/ma...oliques-cheval-poney-pur-sang-best-price.html

You do see them in France but maybe not as common as in the UK

I find muzzles come up really small. As a comparison, my section A who is usually small pony sized for everything wears a cob sized muzzle. My ISH who is 'full' size wears extra large.

I'd go up at least a size, maybe even two.
