Honestly I need to get a grip! Horse is molting like you wouldn't believe, and I have this panic dread in my stomach.

I don't mind winter really, I like the routine! And I know that we have a little while yet but it will sneak up on all you who bury your heads in your strappy tops !-)

I am pretty well prepared really, both horses that wear rugs, have had new rugs in the sale and other rugs are washed and reproofed.

Winter paddock still needs topping and a little fence repair. Stables need staining, new water butts and lights ordering after my generator was stolen.

I have straw, some hay left from last year and a good contact who will bring me some more when I ask.

So why do I feel this panic... have I missed something!!!

Hah, you have missed the annual panic about acorns yet to fall, mega load of 'em I tell ye, loads indeed......

Oh, should have done your painting/creosoting in May :p

TFF, got bedding in, hay in, stables creosoted, winter paddocks ready to go, rugs cleaned & proofed.... what have I missed too??

Gutters Clear?????

Mr cob is is shedding his coat already, my pony not quite yet but my rugs are on for washing and the oak trees fenced off, looks like a bumper crop this year in Dorset from looking at the trees!

Mine have been moulting since Spring ... never really stopped!
As far as being ready for winter ..... TFF acorns falling already although not properly formed, hay not in, logs not ordered, stables not stained ..... oh the list is endless and we STILL have not had summer yet in my opinion, and I STILL have not got away for my summer holiday ..... hey ho!

Rugs sent, hay on order and coming in sept, feed delivered as and when and bedding needs to be ordered although loads from last year left!

Sprout, cheers for that: large pile of seasoned logs in end stable, ready for me to take home as required (no decent storage at home). Hope you DO get your hol tho xx
Ditches: nearly finished re-digging, will also need clearing of autumn leaves in late Nov....

Mine have not started to cast their coats yet but some are beginning to grow long hairs

Mine's moulting and I'm pretending it isn't happening! I still need to dig out the stable and lay a new bed for winter (deep littered on flax), plus order the winter bedding. Horse needs new rugs and I need a new pair of clippers.

It's very much snuck up on me that autumn is on its way :(.

1 of our 2 has started molting still decent weather tho 😊 if it makes anyone feel better I haven't ordered hay in yet (plan to in the next few months we have a lot of grass and not many horses tho so might not need hay for awhile) and Ted grew out of all his rugs and I haven't bought any new yet and the new addition didn't come with any so I guess I better get my butt in gear and find some we like.

There are little patches of white all over my paddock where he has started rubbing his summer coat out and his bum has gone very fluffy all of a sudden :( Have got my hay stocked up bit dont use much of anything else so buy as needed. I wont be sorry to lose the flies although the pay off Im sure will be mud!

The start of the football season and the appearance of the blackberry always does it for me, so I've been in a mild state of panic for a week now. They boys are moulting too which is awful as they're both grey so it gets everywhere.

Rubber matting has been lifted and stables power washed, rugs have gone to be washed a re-proofed, we have bedding in and haylage is ad-lib from the yard so we're not too bad. I still dread the arrival of winter though, even though it's not too bad once it's here, like others have said, you get into a routine and make it work. Getting them up off the hayfields will be a good thing, it currently adds 20 minutes to every farm visit.

Rugs were re-proofed earlier this year. We have 3 bales of bedding for two stable that need to be re-bedded fully. Gutters cleaned recently due to a foul smell. :D Hay will come within the next couple of months.. of course, I haven't ordered it yet.

Just remembered I need a new medium weight for the new one who's medium weight looks like a miniskirt on him. His will go to the mare.. he just needs a size up. Typical.

Clipping season will be starting soon. Didn't get blades sharpened or clipper serviced but they only did one full clip last year and they were brand new so they should be able to do two horses of hunter / blanket varieties.

If it helps anyone at all Countrywide have a huge sale on at the moment! :)

ETA: Annagain just reminded me I need to lay rubber mats in one of the stables still. gah.

My two oldies are both moulting like winter will be here tomorrow. It's nice to hear that others are in the same boat! I'm finding a magic brush brilliant - but does anyone know how to get one properly clear of the short hairs that get stuck right at the bottom of the brush? Wiping it really hard on the corner of a fence post gets rid of the stuff at the top of the bristles, but I can't get rid of the stuff at the bottom without breaking bristles.

Mine too, whoever thought it was a good idea to build stables under trees??!!! I have to deal with leaves all spring/summer and autumn and then when they have all go, I get to worry about big branches in the wind!!!

Thank god it's not just mine! gave him a scratch this morning and loads of fluff started coming out, I thought he was molting early!

At least as it gets colder the flies will all go!

My little rotters shedding too :rolleyes3: in fact Nev the Shetland started shedding in July :eek3:

Major panic as still have 2 fences to replace, stables to stain, hay barn to build, stone path to field to make, muck heap to remove and re site, ditch to dig out, area where manky carts were to clear, fields to top (with lawn mower)and fertilise as the 3 bags of seed put on in spring as fields were pure mud after winter didn't take due to very dry spring :mad3:

Eeps.

Good news is that now have same number of stables as horses for first time in 4 years so tempted to shut them all in Nov not to be released till next spring :biggrin3:

Managed to clean 2 of the stables and mats yesterday but still another 3 to try and do - eek

but also have stables to stain and drains to clear out, but muck heap is being taken away on Friday - woohoo!

We cut and baled and wrapped last week. I now have 300 small bales of hayledge stored all around my house and the sweet smell is delicious . Outside the house that is lol. The big boy is moulting well. The girls take there time. Looking forward to the autumn smells and logs on the fire. All I can say is bring it on. This is the first year I've been quite so organised .

My mares malting like crazy too.. This will be my first winter as a horse owner so am actually weirdly looking forward to it, however that might wear off within a week of her being in! Still need to buy a couple of stable rugs, clean her outdoor one, order bedding and sort out her winter grazing.

Yup...my boy who is CLIPPED is moulting!!!! Panic has set in as I have only a makeshift shelter.....and one very wet field in the winter. We have not done a winter in it yet...

Ordered tonne of hardcore for gateway and trough area, and perhaps shelter if any left...other than that any tips for getting them off the wet or saving the field would be appreciated!

The plan is to separate what is a large field into 4. Minis have one area which wont be as bad as tiny feet...they go in at night....big chap has another section of field for his hay and stomping in at night, with a daytime section of field to nibble and stretch in if not too wet, that way I get to keep almost half of land not poached??

Yes, mine are moulting well atm. I'm not panicking this year; rugs went in to be washed ages ago so just got to collect - 1 horse is going back to owner before winter, and pony was pts earlier in the year, so will only have 1 left to do instead of the 3 I had (struggled with) last winter; and he's out 24/7, so easy peasy and probably won't even need hay....... Looking forward to this winter!

Rugs been done since Spring, grey horse moulting like crazy so house, car and everything in between covered in grey hairs. Bought an extra mediumweight turnout online today, and have already started conversations with work about changing my hours to finish earlier in the evenings! :D
