More pro's sticking up for AT...

Having read this thread through regarding heart-attacks etc - am I right in thinking Mary King lost a horse at Burghley one year - seem to remember an article/interview saying that she'd felt him stumble, managed to slow down enough to jump off. But sadly the horse died.

She managed to stop & get off; Pippa Funnell managed to stop and get off when Bits & Pieces broke down.

I'm just amazed that LG is sticking up for AT. But I suppose as chairman of selectors, she probably has to agree with Foggy.

[ QUOTE ]

She had perhaps 10 seconds from the horse going lame to making the decision to jump the last.

Amy had no longer than me to assess and react and I don’t believe it to be a case of abuse at all."

That is complete BS! It was more like 20 seconds and she set the horse up for the last jump! The horse tried to stop not once but TWICE and she kept pushing him foward.

Here is the video!

for the recoerd acording to the FEI it was actually 28 seconds from stumble to jump.

just as a point of intrest when watching the vid and the timer at the bottem of the screen (the one showing the XC time in min/sec) it shows that LS stumbled and went lame at 11.13, she jumped the last jump at 11.28 and she finally pulled up at 11.40

quite a bit longer than LG's 10 seconds methinks

just watching the clip again made me sad

Whoa!!!!!!
You guys are only looking at a tiny part of the ride!!!!!
If you watch the entire ride, it's like she's got 2 different horses.
For about 5 fences, she took the crop to him exactly 3 times, AFTER the fences!!!! And kept pressing him. THEN HE STUMBLES AND FALLS APART.
It WAS NOT A SUDDEN INJURY!!
If you'll notice his gallop, he's definitely not using all 4 legs equally for ABOUT 5 FENCES!!!
If the person that posted this portion of the ride has the rest of it, you'll definitely see more horridness.

I also noticed that she smacked him quite a few times in between / after fences which I thought was a sign that he wasn't fit enough and was lagging. I didnt however see that for 5 fences he wasnt using all 4 right......? Which fences?

Does anyone know if the injury which occurred would have been very sudden or could it have been something which had been led up to? (if you know what I mean?!).

At last i have seen the video and can see why everyone is up in arms!

IMO she must have known something was wrong. The horse legs were all over the place.

As for being locked on to the fence the horse was clearly trying to stop.

I dont think LG can have seen the video.

Im going to try to watch it again as I only watched it once but found it the most bizarre thing. I know I would have stopped immediately. Yes it could have been a bandage or shoe problem but surely then to jump a fence when there was clearly a problem was asking for trouble. Unfortunately there was no accident at the fence and AT came away unscathed.

Even when she got off she didnt look at his legs! Just cant get my head round what she was thinking. Certainly not behaving like an experienced international rider.

I might ask my colleagues to watch to see their comments! They know nothing about horses. It will be interesting.

I am totally mindblown by the video! So wont comment again-tonight!!

I find it interesting that capn. phillips comments have gone down badly in the USA - he was the first to defend AT. A lot of comments on USA forums are very anti him and don't any longer want him as their team trainer (not just because of this but also because of other 'playing favourites' issues with venues and riders).

I really admire LG and tbh am a bit disappointed by her comment and can only hope that she made it without having seen the video.

USA forums have also questioned whyCMP and Karen O'Connor were at the FEI hearing

Have just shown three friends with no horsey knowledge or experience the video....their genuine responses

Tom: erm...did it hurt itself when jumping? (i then asked before or during jumping) before...way before
Robyn: Why didnt she stop when it tripped? He didnt look very happy! was it ok??
Ben: i dont know, horse?

so there we go....

It is the most bizarre thing I think I have ever seen. She had to know. Why didnt she stop? This is what I would expect from a complete novice with no respect or understanding of a horse.

You are a "riding school numpty what do you know" but you clearly knew more than an experienced international rider!!

But you and your friends clearly care about animals.

If this has come over as sarcastic towards you it is not meant to be. Clearly you have more understanding and compassion than AT.
You can come and ride my horse anytime! AT wont be invited.

Ooops ...... said i wouldnt post!

yes, i understand what you mean

surely anyone can tell a lame horse :S

and the whole "more horses less caring" ???
i work at a yard where the owner goes eventing most weeks and has 3 -5 horses (homebred) in work at a time.
no matter how early we got up, how far we travelled, how much money spent etc, if the horse is feeling off she wont run/pulls up
surely its common sense not to risk a horse.
greed to win IMO

Just watched the video, no excuses, even a real amateur would no something was wrong, yes she should have the book chucked at her, i didnt realise how long the horse was lame for! I had just presumed he was lame just before the last fence, clearly not the case. LC really needs to see the footage..

Just watched the video again - you can spot the exact moment that the horse breaks down. It is truly heartbreaking.

Given the anit MP in the US I wonder if LG is looking for a new job?

tbh as the LG quote was on the PetPlan website I wonder if anyone at that organisation has seen the video - after all they reckon themselves to be the 'best' horse insurance company......

and I wonder if Pet Plan would like to comment on LG comment and/or the AT video ?

Would come better from an 'outraged customer' of PPlan. I'm with NFU but I'm sure someone on here is with PP.

Must admit - would be an interesting thing to see their response

"Amy had no longer than me to assess and react and I don’t believe it to be a case of abuse at all"

Forgive my language, but that is utter bollocks! I just hope she hasn't seen the video.

I watched the video several times again today. I think AT did know something was wrong but was so close to the finish she decided it was worth finishing. It was, without doubt, the wrong decision and possibly fuelled by a desire to complete. Who knows?

I would have stopped as would so many others but I think there are also some who would have taken the same decision that AT did being that close to the finish. These people are highly competitive.

But I dont think any professionals should be condoning the decision. It was wrong and the horse died. I can now understand why many are keeping quiet.
