Most absorbant bedding for deep litter?

Josie is due to go for surgery in 10ish days. She'll be on strict box rest when she comes home, prob for at least 8 weeks.

I was thinking of deep littering for this time.

She's on straw, which I thought I'd keep. But is there anything any of you would reccommend for putting underneath so soak the yuk up? Ideally I'll put down 1 or 2 bales before she comes home, then just add straw on top as and when??

i have to use shavings as my horse eats all other bedding forms, and i deep litter him on it to save money
works really well, and doesnt smell untill you disturb the base
i use one bale every 10-14 days to top up

I agree with deep littering shavings - I found it the most cost effective and as peachesandcream said it doesn't smell until you take the whole lot out

wouldn't recommend it under straw though as I think it may get a bit messy
 
I deep litter with shavings and it works fine - have to say though, if I didn't get shavings in my livery I would buy Aubiose as I like it much better and it's brill for deep littering

i can highly recommend Hemcore, i deep litter on it and it works fabulously, when a mare on our yard had a foal we put a Hemcore bed down and straw on top. the straw was bone dry and all the yuck had soaked into the Hemcore. Is fab stuff (i believe Aubiose and Bliss are the same stuff but the make we use is Hemcore)

I'm semi-deep littering (take the wet out once a week) on a base of shredded newspaper (free!!) with a decent depth of chopped straw (Nedz bedz type stuff) on top. The newspaper is very absorbent and has cut my weekly wet bedding waste in half

Completely agree...I have tried all sorts of bedding the the recent shortage pushed me onto wood pellets and I fully intend to stay on them. Fantastic bedding....and so cheap.
 
I cannot work out yet how much water to use - either too much or too little! I have horse on box rest so cannot put pellets down to soak & dry, now putting them down under rubber mat to soak pee up, have bought 4 bags and not im[ressed, how do you use them???????

I found best way to soak them before adding to bed was to put into a clean wheelbarrow and wet them. It is easy to adjust the amount of water, as you can always add more if needed. I wet them then left them for about 10 mins and turned them over in the barrow and left them for about 20 mins to dry.

Not sure about putting them UNDER rubber mats, why is it getting wet under the mat.
