So my Freelander 2 is coming to the end of its life I fear, Im keen to get another 4x4 even though OH is being silly about it saying I should get a little car... yes so how would I tow the trailer? And how would I get out in the depths of winter when we live above the snow line in rural Scotland?

Anyway... so Id like to try and suggest some which are the most economical as possible (in fuel, tax etc.). It'll have to be second hand so cant be any brand new-out cars or anything massively fancy. Id like another Freelander 2 as it does tow my current horse well but I worry if I get a bigger horse in future it might struggle a little (it did struggle towing a 17.1hh I had at one point) so it is a little gutless. Although we can get a pick up truck through our business, they're not exactly practical for putting the dog in the boot and carrying (what will be) two children about so ideally not one of those unless they were really that much better money-wise to run...

Suggestions please?

I've got a BMW X3 2.0d auto and it tows up to 2400kg. We have a 511 and put two medium size horses on it and it tows no problem at all. When not towing it does 45-50mpg I think.

Second the Skoda.
I would have thought a modern double cab pickup would be ideal for what you describe . Dog would have more room in the back! Huge tax benefits as well if you have a business.

If 2000kg tow weight is enough for you what about a Honda CRV? We get approx 44mpg day to day use, it's a diesel, manual, and there is plenty of space in it. We generally just take one cob out but we've taken two out with a combined weight of 650kg with IW 505 and it was fine, admittedly this was shorter journeys.

Totally agree. Keeps the dog separate from the kids and if the kids are more annoying than the dog put them in the back :D

I have a crew can pick up with a truckman top and it's a great machine.

My ford kuga averages nearly 40mpg, very roomy, AWD rather than 4 wheel drive. Would tow one horse and trailer not sure about 2.

pajero sport, weight, power, economy, reliability, handles a big trailer with ease, feels good on the road not tiring to drive.

Second the CRV. I have the idtec (sp?) manual diesel, and although less mpg living in hilly wales and doing lots of little trips (35ish mpg) its fab with my Ifor 505 and 500kg cob battering around in the back like the pillock he is. Fits all my show gear, three sausage dogs in the boot (plastic lined so no hoovering!!) and my mum and her fridge sized picnics!
