move!!!

Tap with the whip and if they won't move make them stay there until they learn they will ONLY be allowed to move if it's towards where you want to go. May take a long time, but usually works. Don't give in! xx

wen the pony is tapped wif a whip she bucks and wen she is kicked on she rears and she would happily stand at the same place all day so were thiking about trying spurs but under the watchful eye of a more experienced rider do you think that will work?

On a more serious note - take her out hacking with another horse something that walks faster than her so she is constantly having to go forwards to keep up then transfer that to the school so she has something to keep up with then gradually getting her working on her own again in one half of the school while the horse in half the school away and then build it up until you are on your own going forwards again. Whatever happens never let them go backwards!

Have you had everything checked? Why and when does she nap? Is it the same place all the time? Is it as soon as you get on? Is it when she is just on her own or in company too? In the school? On hacks?

More details might help people give you a more helpful answer......

we have tryed tht but she seems quiet happy just to stand there on the hack and be left behind and she doesnt move in the school at all in fact not many horses at my yard do :/

we have tryed riding her in the arena, feild and out hacking both on the roads and on the bridlepaths.she wont move in the arena at all she moves a little in the feild but when she gets to the stables or a gate she stops and will rear when she is asked to go forward.out on hacks she is quiet good on the road but if she does play up on the road then obviously this could be very dangerous and on bridlepaths she stops when she sees grass but the grass is at her height so she doesnt put her head down to eat it if you no what i mean

If she rears when kicked, what do you think she's going to do with spurs?

Try this now, get the heel of your hand and thump yourself hard, in the ribs about where your leg goes on a horse. Think about how much, after a couple of hard thumps, your rib cage will tense up to protect itself, imagine exercising with that feeling, would it be easy to move forward, freely with your rib cage braced against a thump like that?

Please, don't do anything that will encourage rearing, yes, she needs to accept your leg, but quietly. (From experience, I can tell you the last thing you want is a horse going over backwards on you) Softly, softly, catchee monkey ;)

I would suggest you ask her quietly with your leg, give her time to think, ask again with a firmer squeeze, if she doesn't move, turn her. Open one rein and make her move in any direction, so long as you get a reaction. Using one rein will mean she HAS to move her feet at some stage, there's only so far she can bend her head :p then move back in the direction you wanted to go. Somebody on the ground to encourage her with a tickle of a lunge whip may help, but just a tickle. Mares tend to work against you if you TELL them to do it, ask her respectfully.

Most importantly, stay calm. The minute you start getting angry/worried/upset, you will tense up, she will sense it, and then you're scuppered. Persistence is key.

I knew a horse that did this. she would just plant her feet and refuse to move. turns out she had kissing spines and she found it too painful to move with weight on her back. The bucking and rearing also makes me think your horse might be in the same situation, trying to get you off as she might be in too much pain :(

Thanks I'll try that :D xo

Does her saddle fit? Could her feet hurt? She may be having you on, but if she doesn't even want to follow other horses, I'd be concerned about a pain issue.

That sounds a bit odd. Can you tell us more about this pony , how old is she ,age when was she broken , by whom, could you find out what she was like then? What does she do in the field ,have you seen her move for anyone else, have you ever seen her go for a blast , does she drink , how much per day for definite ? Do the others drink , how much? Is she very thin or very fat ? Could her feet be sore?

"she doesnt move in the school at all in fact not many horses at my yard do "

Are you saying that if you have a group lesson in your yard all the horses and riders just go in the school and stay standing in one place like frozen statues ?

Will she "pony" as the American 's call it ( lead from another horse) ?

Haven't read all replies so apologise if someone has suggested this. My pony would plant his feet and refuse to move I used to tickle his heal with a long schooling stick which would send him forward done this with someone at the side whilst walking, as soon as he stopped listening to his rider he'd get a tickle and shuffle forward x

Has she actually been broken properly?
i know this may sound a silly question to the rest of you, but.......

C.C.T. It actually worked and once he knew it would happen he started moving forwards and now I have trouble stopping haha trust him to be welsh!!

i never ment that to sound cheecky and im sorry if it came across as it was but it wasnt lol and im not sure if she has been broken in properlly as we dont no much about her past except that she has had 4 foals

Then it is more than probable that she has never been broken in.
I sugest that you start from scratch with her, or get someone who knows how, to do so.
Did you not ask when you bought her, if she was broken, or see her ridden?
