Hello

My 4 year old TB is moving to a yard where she will be on part livery.

I want to try make the transition as easy as possible for her and make sure I do everything I can do keep her from to much stress.

It will be quite a huge routine/yard change from now however I am hoping once settled she will be fine as they are on the same routine year round.

What suggestions do people have in terms of calming/ gut protection and just general tips to get her settled?

Thank you so much!

in what way is the routine changing? if you're e.g. changing to 24/7 turnout I'd try to mimic that at your current yard so she has less change at once if that's possible.
are you on part livery now or do you have her on DIY?

if its just a change in environment then I think all you can do is try and ensure the yard set it up so she has company within sight which helps them to settle in, and give her a bit of time to adjust. if it's a change to part livery then I think I'd try and be around both ends of the day for a while so she has some continuity.

other than that... don't add to the drama yourself, I think sometimes we can get so stressed ourselves by yard moves that the horses pick up on that. I would not make any feed changes, try not to change her forage too much (e.g. if on hay now, stick to hay) and if you were worried about her guts a bit of protexin quick fix is not going to do any harm.

She is currently on DIY so is used to me unfortunately but due to work commitments I won't be able to maintain that, hence the move. In the long term the yard will suit her I think because she loves routine and it is very much a routine based yard. However I currently bring her in Morning and evening for breakfast and dinner and then she goes out again. At the new yard she will have turnout for most of the day but stabled at night which is a massive change for her, however all the horses on the yard are on the same routine and because she hates being alone I think she will be ok being with them all in her stable.

it might sound a bit weird but when i moved yards with my very stressy mare i made her new bed up with most of her old bed on top, not the dirty part but the shavings i saved, i also took a couple of bales of my hay and used it completely for the first 2 nights and then gradually changed to the yards hay...small things like this may help to make her feel a bit more at home. also goes without saying keep her feed the same and if you have to change, do it gradually. i also rode mine the next morning to keep her routine the same.. mine still had me as her only carer so she was fine...
