liquid paraffin to remove the scabs. Hibiscrub (10ml to a litre of water). Then either nettex muddy marvel cream or barrier heel to hoof as barier creams. Both are thick and stay on.
Hibiscrub to wash the legs, aromaheel to soften and remove the large scabs and the muddy marvel descab and disinfectant to remove the smaller scabs. then muddy marvel barrier cream to prevent it reoccurring.
wash with pevidine/hibiscrub usually leave it for 5/10 mins to 'soak' then give scabs a scrub and rinse, dry legs thoroughly before putting on cream.If gets really bad may need Flamazine(?sp)from vet.
Oh and from experience don't stable on straw............

This is what has worked for me - I use povidone-iodine (pevidine) as I found the hibiscrub seemed to make her legs flare up for some reason. Then dry thoroughly - cotton wool works well. I had to clip the hair pretty short so that I could clean everything properly, also helps it to dry quickly. I think that's pretty important - having wet skin for a long time just makes it worse.
I got some flamazine and just dob that on the scabs overnight while she is stabled. Then in the morning I apply Muddy Marvel barrier cream which stays put all day. (I use carex soap first in the evening to get the cream off, before the antiseptic, otherwise it just turns into a smeary mess!)
My mare's mud fever is now pretty much gone - front feet are all better and there is just a little bald patch on one hind which is starting to grow hair again
