The best defence against mud is never overgrazing, so you still have a decent root system holding everything together. If the grass is a reasonable length - >5cm - they can get enough through a muzzle to prevent frustration and the root system then doesn't suffer. My friend plaited her pony's mane round the muzzle strap, which kept it on. For now, could you make a dry area with mud control slabs/similar for feeding hay? Long term you could track in the summer to help with weight and give a break from the muzzle, and graze the middle over the winter.

Thank you, I really want to avoid using a muzzle if I can. I would love mudcontrol mats more than anything but just can't afford them at the moment. have made a track for now just to give the other field a break, its not at all wet at the moment. The grass is also extremely high/long so will take awhile for it to get muddy. Thanks

A friend has muzzled her EMS pony with a quick release headcollar and it's out 24;7 on a rested field.

My horses don’t have EMS but are muzzled all the time they are in the field .
They do half the dropping of the one who has no muzzle because he has no front teeth .

A track system won't work on land as wet as that in winter. It'll soon become a quagmire. Summer, maybe.

My land is far dryer than yours but I still can't run a track or my equicentral system in winter. It works grand in the late spring to early autumn, though.

I've made it quite wide, and the grass is extremely long so shouldn't get wet for a while. Thank-you
