Hi everyone, a bit of advice and opinions sought after regarding this. Not really looking for saddle suggestions after very gratefully receiving plenty of recommendations. Firstly here is a bit of a background information, 5 yr old croup high gelding, who does windsuck, after being kept stabled as a stallion previously until last year. I have owned him for just over a year, he is now living out and had a lot of growing up to do and a fair few issues so I let him live out to grow up and mature, then slowly started tackling each issue on the ground. He has made huge progress however he is now ready to start progressing under saddle and muscle soreness is holding him back. He has recently had a new saddle fitted and last week he had the physio out, however after the physio had been out he has shown signs of pain when putting on the saddle and doing the girth up which he didn't show before and also he is very sore. I love this horse dearly, but I would also love to just go on one hack sooner or later!

Just to add, teeth and back have also been checked and physio/chiro had no concerns.

After speaking to my instructor we can both see there is something not right, he is sore all over his back, shoulders and lower back, so we are not doing anything with a saddle on. I am going to give him 3 weeks of long reining only, coupled with stretches and massage (with the rubber curry).

Have i missed anything? Part of me is considering ulcers also...

Second opinion maybe from another physio/chiro? If the problem only started after the physio would be I would be suspecting that something happened during the treatment.

Thanks both, i will be considering that if after the following i am still not satisfied. I rang back original physio who has got a fantastic reputation and i thought she was great, i explained the situation and she is coming out to have a look on sunday. We do think it is saddle related but either way it will be sorted out one way or another.

I am interested in trying the arnica so would love some more information if possible please :)

I highly recommend arnica tincture, then you can just syringe in his mouth. Really helps de stress, as well as take the soreness out of him. At the first sign of colic, I give this, and several times that has been enough. I get mine from folklore Practice in Suffolk. PM if you want their number.

Pretty sure there's a scientific study on the link between ulcers and windsucking.

Slightly on a tangent, when I used to be "a sportsperson" if I saw the sports massage for a deep seated injury or adhesion I'd be sore/ visibly bruised for days after. Osteo and chiro were instant relief for specific issue by contrast. Sports massage was for more ongoing things. Might be that your horse is sensitive like me!

I hope it is that to be honest. He is very sensitive so i wouldnt be surprised if he is still sore.

The physio is coming back out to check him and the saddle over. I hope she can she can provide the answer, otherwise ulcers are next on the list!

Just a thought but he usually has between 2 and 6 polos when i visit, and over a week ago i ran out of sugar free and bought some that werent sugar free, is it at all possible that these could be the problem? Im not feeding him anymore just in case!
Thanks cg i am going to try to get hold of some nearer to here but if i get stuck i will pm you.

Thanks again for your replies.

Those sugar free sweets can give humans the trots (well certainly me, even 2 or 3) and I think horses digestive systems are even more sensitive.

Is his windsucking increasing or decreasing or no change? It is possible that the muscle soreness also partly comes from tensing his body so often for so long in order to windsuck and that the physio may have started to release this as well. There are studies that suggest some windsuckers do it because they have excess stomach acid and ulcers as a result so try a low cereal and sugar diet and an antacid supplement to see if that gives him any relief?

Hi pcm. Arguably no change in windsucking but he is definitely more ratty. The physio did mention that he maybe more aware of how he feels now so i think you may have hit on something. I am starting him on settlex with healthy tummy see if this makes a difference, he is currently on grass only with a mineral lick.
