Music while you ride?

I’ve never ridden a horse that hasn’t responded positively to music, and as one poster has said, often venues play music so it helps to get them accustomed to that.

When the weather has been bad for a prolonged spell and we haven’t been able to hack or turn out much, a few of us will book the indoor for a hour or so, whack some music on and ride in formation with each other. Horses seem to like it and it gives us something different to do. Also good practice for show rings etc.
 
Seems like there is always the odd poster who is not only judgey but borderline nasty ?
And fails to read a post correctly.... I did say "depending on the situation", so that normally is in the school on one of my own more experienced horses. I also like to get an idea of what songs/ music would suit her if I do eventually decide to venture into the dark and dangerous world of dressage to music.
 
I'm another podcast/audiobook listener.
Done a lot of boring in hand hacks lately and then very structured easy schooling as part of a rehab plan and having something interesting to listen to stops me from getting too frustrated.
So long as you are safe I don't see what the issue is.

I also love riding to the right kind of music, my freestyle is great fun :)
 
i also like going for walks while listening to an audiobook or podcast. Listening to nature is nice and all that, but I don't feel that puritanical about it, I rarely have time to read a book so it's a nice way to pass the time and get some fresh air at the same time. Plus often when I think back about a book I've listened to I remember a walk I did at the same time and it's a nice memory. Sometimes it's nice to combine activities :D

eta too many nices. Had a stressful morning, got no brain left ;)

I'm just amused that it's all dismissed as "electronic babble" - which is certainly a novel way of describing the Archers, or (my current choice this week) Paradise Lost. We're not all listening to Slipknot or One Direction (not that it should matter if one were...).
 
Entirely depends on my mood, 9 times out of 10 I hack out in the quiet, it's nice to just hear the sounds of the country and hoof steps, but on the odd occassion, I might use my phone to pop the radio on or play some music quietly from the speaker. Usually if the horse is being a twonk, gives me something to distract my nerves a bit, something to prompt me to sing along to. It can be hard to think of literally any song to sing when the fear tries to creep in, and singing seems to distract that little lizard part of my brain going DANGER!

Same really at the yard, little private place I share with a friend, so sometimes I'll pop something on whilst I'm alone and doing the chores, poopicking, clipping, grooming etc. Never with headphones though, for me personally it feels safer that way. And never when anyone else is up out of courtesy, don't think my 69yo friend would enjoy the sound of Enter Shikari whilst I squawk along to it!
 
We play it on speaker or if really windy have one ear phone in.

My Welsh mare worked really well to Linkin Park.

My sister has her oh walk with her and her baby playing road sounds, explosions etc as he is in the middle of no where and had a freak out the other day Whne the sounds of the A5 came through the woods. So he is now working with any sounds playing on the phone to get him used to them.

I would be fine if someone was riding my horse with an ear phone in or had it blaring from there phone.

The horses need to be used to different sounds and you can't get much more different than music

You see to me a lot of radio is babble to my ears. In particular over the last few years I find it almost impossible to listen to people speaking on the radio and even TV I can only listen to something which isn’t too loud or disturbing and certainly not adverts. I think I actually suffer from some sort of mental or maybe physical issue over it - it’s really annoying at times for me too.

Having said that I hope I’m not judgmental over other people’s listening choices. Unless of course it is One Direction ?.

I'm also quite fussy about radio and TV. It gets really grating if it's encroaching on your life when you don't want it to. I find it much more pleasant if it's something I've chosen to listen to, well read and engaging ;)
 
We have a radio in the indoor, I'll occasionally turn that on.

I never listen to music out hacking, I want to be able to hear what is going on around me.

I often listen to British History Podcast or I am trying to learn German too so quite educational... two birds, one stone etc...

I used to listen to Russian while hacking for the same reason but it got too hard to distinguish the pronunciation while out and about. German's less difficult but a very worthy endeavour. I've got about 150 hours on Hitler and the Nazis on my phone, it's been very educational.

I do have to cut it with light hearted stuff though - recently I was hacking past the building site listening to Ready Player One read by Wil Wheaton, which is very much not high brow as I realised when he started to discuss evolutionary advantages of masturbation. I regretted having my phone on speaker at this point, but was grateful I hadn't stopped to let nursey kids pat her nose at the school at that point ;)

They do look good! My only concern would be how the band round the back would interface with a riding hat? Is there any chance you'd be willing to test it please?

I like to hack while listening to podcasts or audiobooks, and I discovered a way to have academic papers converted into an audio format so I spent a fair while catching up on my 'reading' while I rode ;). I usually use one wireless headphone and it's from a set that has active listening - it feeds external noises through the earpiece as well as the podcast etc.
 
My old boss used to have the radio on in the indoor school. She would ride what ever pace suited the music. She rode at international event & olympic dressage level so it must have helped. I do the same (not nearly to that level in anyway) Would never ride with earphones in. I find the horses like the music too

What radio station worked to ride to?
 
I only ever have one headphone in, but love listening to music or podcasts! Current faves are Christine and the Queens, Stormzy, the Buck Off Banter podcast for something horsey and My Dad Wrote A Porno for something hysterically funny!

I have a playlist for all situations really with all different types of music :-)

If I know I'll be alone I'll play it out loud in my pocket.
 
Not really whilst riding, although shows often have music playing....but I always play music from my phone when poo picking or mucking out, as we have our own stables within individual paddocks, so nobody can hear if I’m in the mood for some cheesy 90s throwbacks!
 
This reminds of a few weeks ago- as I pottered about the yard one evening on my own listening to Real Life Ghost Stories podcast. They were discussing the ‘real’ case that inspired the film ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ and they played a recording of the real exorcism, including the horrific demonic sounds coming out of this girl. Needless to say I spooked myself good and proper! Was rather glad I wasn’t sat on Millie at the time!
