muzzle guilt!!!

omg i hate hate hate having to muzzle my horse!

He hates it so much but now ive no choice - hes far too good a doer, gone into new ridiculously lush field (diy so no choice)

Omg can he push my guilt buttons!!! - stands looking at me all pathetic whilst trying to rub it off whilst im there - yet when he cant see me he is fine!

He can eat and drink with it on - oh i wish i could tell him im not being deliberately horrible - hed hate laminitus much more than a stupid muzzle!

Hes such a good sweet boy - Im sure he thinks im deliberateley punishing him!
 
Yep you have to learn to look away! Lots of houses back onto my horses field and I have twice been stopped and told that it is cruel to 'make him wear that nasty muzzle'. I told them the reason he had been removed from the field for a month in spring was because his feet were inflamed with mild laminitis because someone decided to remove his muzzle. And that surely having to keep the horse confined to his stable and in pain was much worse than making him wear a muzzle!
 
I went through that this year, never had to muzzle him in nearly 8 years, but soooooo much grass in massive field, I was worried about laminitis, I was nearly in tears, worried to death he wouldn't know how to eat and mega worried he wouldn't know how to drink, I was shoving grass through it to show him there was a hole, he looked pathetic and made me feel so guilty, anyway 2 days and he was an expert :D, I did cut the hole out slightly as they do come a bit small.

I'm on DIY & I manage the paddock that my muzzled horse is in. I use elecric tape & energiser to limit the size of paddock & the amount of grazing he has access to. Is there any reason why you cannot do this also?
 
Mine stays fat on restricted grazing ideally I would muzzle too but she is an expert muzzle destruction machine and can defeat any brand tried 5 so far. It is terrible but I would rather muzzle than know her life was at risk as she gets footy on no grazing no hard feed or ad libs i.e bugger all!!

no he shares his paddock with 2 other cobs and him and another are really good friends - they would hate to be seperated and the other cob is not on a restricted diet - ty everyone i am doing it but it is horrible isnt it :(
 
Omg I have been feeling this guilt too but I keep reminding myself that better to have the muzzle than have laminitis or have to stay in :rolleyes:
 
I found the greenguard ones to be the best but you have to get the headcollar as well. I sold mine but Im getting another shortly for the fat beast.

Get over it. It's just a ruddy muzzle. If you need it to manage your horses weight while it still has the freedom to roam in a field, it is far kinder than the alternative of restrictive grazing, stable keep, or small paddock.

Ultimately, you are saving your horse from a horrible condition.

We don't have ideal conditions for the average leisure horse in this country. We have rich, lush pasture so we have to do things like muzzle as we can't go about creating ideal conditions on someone else's land!

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but it's a management tool like any other and horses get used to wearing it and will not hate you for it.

I believe there are many things to feel guilty about, muzzling should not be one of them. So stop beating yourselves up, find one that is comfortable and realise that you are managing grass intake, without taking away liberty. :)

yep your right - hes out with his friends and can run around freely and most importantly isnt in agony with laminitus :)
