My sweet little JRT pup Coco was out in the snow earlier this evening and wouldnt come back in for at least 30mins. When she did show up she was all muddy so had to bath her. She's just been out before bedtime and wouldnt come back in again so went looking for her. Found her stood next to a rabbit which at first I thought was dead as it was laying still and had snow on it but no it was still alive and breathing shallowly. I hate seeing creatures suffering so was in a panic about what to do. Didnt want to just leave the poor thing suffering and wasnt sure if it was just in shock. So picked up rabbit in a towel and put it in a box in the garage then saw the blood from its side and the poor thing died as I was trying to make it comfortable :(

Am I just a total wuss? I admit it made me shed a few tears.

Here is a pic of my little rabbit killer:

clever puppy!!! if it was wild then agree it was probably ill anyway!
mine just chases them
although the cat did murder my cousin's pet rabbit and drag it past their window, across the rd into the garden that wasn't good!! :o

Ah how cute

Im afraid if its in a terriers nature this will be a first of many!! I have a 14 year old terrier and she still brings back freshly killed things back on a regular basis, its her instinct. Sadly it can varie forom an aray of things rats, rabbits squirrals, birds anything that moves really!!!! Shes very good at it and has perfected it now, she kills them very quickly so that brings me some comfort. You will get used to it, i am now and lucklily she buries them most the time so i dont have to deal with the dead animal!!:)

Sounds like i'm just going to have to harden to it then! Coco is itching a bit. Cant see any fleas but may have to get something for that if she keeps itching. Silly pup. When I went to pick her up she put her ears back and looked guilty then rolled over in the snow so she seemed to know she had done something I wouldnt like. Not that that ever stops her. She just looks cute so I dont tell her off lol.

My friend has a lurcher that took down a stag and killed it at 6 mths old. Same dog got attacked by another stag, and cost my friend a fortune in vets bills. He's killed lots of other wild animals, so now is muzzeled when they go out, and doesn't even try. clever dog!!! It's horrible to see, but in their nature!!!

LOL - did you not expect your JRT to do what its bred to do?

It was just a rabbit - I bet there are plenty more for it to get :) However I would worry that a pup managed to bag a rabbit at that age - quite possibly the rabbit had Mixy in which case I would have necked it anyway.

My old dog had a knack for picking up myxi bunnies. Thought he was retrieving them.

I cottoned on though - I've bagged myself two myxi rabbits, by hand! Involved a lot of chasing!!!

but yeah, myxi is a no brainer, neck 'em.

Whatever you do though, don't turn into my "I can't take them outside in case they kill something!" mother! her poor JRTs see nothing but their own backyard because of their nature.

And one came from an estate outside manchester. I very much doubt she was ever bred as a pet!!

Our yard cat kills rabbits! Ordinary, bog standard sort of a moggy. Wish he'd concentrate on rats and not on baby rabbits, wrens, voles. A born killer if ever there was one. Hope he doesn't get the reindeer Friday night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it goes with the territory with JRTs!!! A good flea and tick treatment is a real must all year round otherwise you will all suffer!

The worst aspect of this all is that they tend to forget all about their recall when they are hunting! Pookie literally goes deaf because he is so focused on the hunt and had to go on the long line to remind him of his 'proper duties'!

good little pup you should have wacked it in a stew. No reason why it would be ill just cs its a waild rabbit. They are all lethargic at the moment cos of the cold and lack of food so wouldnt worry about it been ill.

Cute little pup :) I agree it was probably poorly. My little dog chased a rabbit once accross 2 fields and didnt catch it. Doggie ended up hitting a fence when rabbit shot through it! It was actually quite amusing to watch and neither ended up hurt.

I have a 20 month old staff and two rabbits and she loves them!! licks them to death follows them around the garden, jumps in their pen, obviously i watch her while there out and never ever leave them unsupervised but I dont think she would ever hurt them!!

My JRT is a working dog, he earns his keep killing rats locally for farmers but when it comes to wabbits he's pretty useless unless the rabbit is ill!! His little legs are not quick enough to catch one on the run and my lurcher is a dope who chases the JRT and not the rabbit!!!

The JRT did bring me a huge rabbit once, he tried to pass it off as his own but seeing as the rabbit was stiff it quiet obviously had died a natural death and been laying in the bush for a while!! I didn't let on that I knew small dog hadn't killed it himself...well didn't want to dent his pride!!:D

Definitely part of a JRTs job description. Mind you Evie has managed to catch the occasional rabbit and its not exactly what GSDs were bred for:o. Its possible that the rabbit Coco caught was just a bit slow because of the bad weather, they must be struggling for food, I have noticed them in our field foraging amongst the horses hay.

Good dog! I wouldn't chastise her too much, its like getting a budgie and not liking it tweeting to be honest. I can imagine your displeasure but its par for the course I'm afraid and I'd say it'll be worse now she's tasted it.

Our 6 month old JRT bitch caught and killed a bird a few weeks ago. It was flying and she just launched herself at it! We have pet rabbits and the dogs don't seem to bother with them but they have grown up with them there. Hopefully it will stay that way. The rabbits are bigger than the dogs!

Our two Spinones worked together, sort of, to catch a bunny the other day, the older one has had mixie bunnies before, this is the first healthy one, nice little snack!!
Our cat used to drag adult bunnies in through the catflap, she isn't fast enough to catch them now.
