My Akita Pup :)

Must admit I stayed away from this thread purely due to the 'it's a BYB dog, therefore owner is at fault' attitude, despite the fact that Kao stated early on that the breeders lost money on the litter and she took the puppy with no money exchanging hands etc? From what I have read (and that is all we can base our opinions on), Kao seems to have her head screwed on the right way, and comes across as well educated in regards to the importance of discipline, boundaries, socialization etc. as well as an understanding of indiscriminate breeding. I'm not sure why the negativity? Akita pups end up in far, far worse homes on a daily basis I'm sure.

Kao, I think Aiko is gorgeous and I love the name :) I'd agree with others, get her out and about as soon as, even if it's in your arms (for short periods I assume, I've never seen a pup that age so big!) Good luck with puppy socializing! I for one want regular updates of how she is getting along :p

Congrats on your new family member :)

In no way were my comments meant in a mean way. You have the odds stacked against you is all i am saying.
I have seen in the Akita rescue what bad breeding does to an Akita and it is far far worse than i have seen with any other breed of dog.

Good for you getting in to a class. I would try your hardest to seek out a trainer who has experience of Akita's.

Echo the above, a very mature reply, well done for not storming off as some supposedly more mature people might have done. It sounds as if you are determined to do the right thing with her, I wish you the best of luck, and don't forget the majority of people on here will always offer any help they can.

Gorgeous puppy! She looks very cuddly, cute and she'll probably grow into a very big dog.

Personally I take the risk of socialising my pups after the first vaccination as I prefer to have them out and about as soon as possible (I also prefer to get the pups at 7 weeks but some people don't like separating them from their mums so early). There is a small risk to her from unvaccinated dogs and foxes, but if you are sensible with where you go, personally I think it's better than risking a dog that's missed the crucial, easly socialisation years. To be fair I have carried 4 pups so far but I don't think that's an option with Aiko!!

Wow, she's huge! And very pretty!

My dogs met a 9 month old akita bitch a few weeks ago, young family were walking her and the mum told me her brother had brought it "from a bloke in a pub" and realised soon after that he was not cut out to be an Akita owner. Sister took over ownership and to their credit, she was a lovely, well mannered dog.

Looking forward to your updates on her :)

Utterly gorgeous! How old is she? I Thought I had it bad trying to lug Bear (19kg) round with his stitched paw but she looks heavier already!

she's utterly gorgeous, and you really do sound as if you have your head screwed on right, Kao, so very best of luck with her - if you keep open-minded and listen to those who know a lot about the breed (plenty of them on here by the looks of it) then I think you'll do right by her. I hope she rewards you by being a lovely dog for you. please keep us posted, with lots more pics too... i think she deserves a modelling career, makes those Andrex puppies look positively ugly! ;) ;)

Beautiful dog, Kao. And someone was going to end up with her - so better someone as lovely as you, than some idiot with no common sense or willingness to learn.

Thanks everyone :) I like to think I'm not absolutely clueless :D
She's going to the vets tonight for her first jab then I'm taking her to my friends house, he has her brother, so hopefully they'll get on well and there's my family's dogs too.
I was told she isn't at high risk if the dogs she comes in to contact with are vaccinated?

Will definitely keep everyone updated :)

It's all about weighing up risk really......when you take your pup to be vacc'd, ask the vet if there are any outbreaks of parvo or any other nasties in the area. If he says no, I personally have in the past then taken my pups out and about.....deciding that the benefits of socialisations outweigh the disadvantages.
