Can I ask why you are keeping him entire???

My palo did this, and when he went to Newmarket vets for surgery ( something un related) he bit the nurses. When he came home he started to eat the donkey. So I said if you keep on you will lose yer nuts. Well needless to say I have a gelding now and the biting has stopped.
Unless you are firm with him and smack his nose ans use verbal words like NO! it wont get better.

I suggest you geld him

This, geld him.

Hi can you tell us a bit more about him- what sort of place did you get him from, was he just weaned or already out with other horses etc? Do you keep him in/ out/ with others? What breed is he and what are you planning on doing with him? Have you had youngsters before? Interested in what made you get a colt.. Etc etc that sort of thing- all helps to get a better understanding of him. Thanks!

ALL colts bite - until they learn not to. The elbow is a very useful part of your anatomy. Every time he tries to bite your elbow should poke him hard in the side of the face - on that soft area near the mouth! DON'T use your hand to smack him - that will make him head shy. But the elbow comes from nowhere - anmd you don't need to use it for anything else! And geld him - now if his testicles are descended!

My gelding went through a nippy stage. He's a bit ear/head shy so I didn't want to biff him on the nose. So I would just say 'NO' very loudly and push his neck away.

Thought he was supposed to be being gelded in order to stay at the livery you found. Did you not also post last week that he had to stay in till gelded?

My horse has never become head-shy and i smack his nose from time to time. It depends on the individual. Not all colts bite I have known some that don't.

well i got him from a horse breeding farm in peterborough i dont know much bout him never got told anything when i asked i wanted him coz he looked lovely and i felt sorry for him being kept in a mucky horrible place with other horses =/ no i havent had one before this is my first

and no i dont have to get him gelded but i am going to and the yard owner is fine with this he is being kept in at all times as all the other horses do up there

From OPs other posts he/she has only had this colt a week, the person she purchased from wouldn't geld, but OP intends to geld asap. OP you just have to be firm, and book the vets asap, then chuck ned out for a week or so, bring him in and crack on standing no messing.

Oh get back under your bridge, honestly :D

Stephie, if they wouldn't geld him and you now find you can't because his balls haven't dropped I'd find out if the dealers will take him back and get someone older and more determined than you to push them to take him back.

If his balls haven't dropped now it may be months before they do and you can't cope with his behaviour as an entire and presumably can't or won't afford to pay the far higher cost of gelding a horse with retained testicles.

Sorry, I suspect you're not a troll but someone with a good heart who has been taken advantage of.

OP, dont worry, just give him a bucket of food and throw him treats to back him off.

May I suggest parelli with him? You need to buy all the equipment but its worth it :)

If I were an 11month old colt with lots of energy and was kept in all the time, I think Id bite the hell out of my owner too im afraid. Really not a good idea to keep youngsters like this

You may not be a troll but you seem in a sticky situation but really?! You have a ungelded colt as a first horse who bites you and is stabled constantly whilst also looking for another youngster for your little sister...?
