my colt bites HELP !!!

well yeh theres no need to be rude like that i mean wtf have i done wrong apart from asking for advice :(

Unfortunately when you ask silly questions you get silly answers.

I really hope you are winding us all up and aren't really keeping an 11 month old colt in 24/7 by itself, while looking for a 2 yr old for your younger sister to ride. That would be very sad.

Like, wtf ;)

Nothing wrong in asking advice, ask away.

Parts of your posts sound a little odd , but I will remain on the fence :)

So get him gelded, get a vet in to see if he is ready, tell him no when he bites, and for god sake let him out!!!! Babies need excercise to build strength in bones and muscles, what kind of establishment insists that all horses are kept in 24/7 especially this time if year.

And this is very petty on my behalf , but. Can't stand text speak :(

To be fair op, you will see that earlier on I was constructive, I had read that you were a first time buyer who was silly enough to get an 11 month old colt, but you were gelding it... that was enough for me to think yes, a very stupid move on the op's part but I will give advice. Then I read that this horse, has no turnout, and furthermore, you want a 2-3yr old freebie horse (barely handled is ok) to be around your sister.... At that point my brain shuts down and this whole thing becomes a joke, it is either a joke because it is a thread created by you in the interest of Saturday night humour, or a joke because seriously???? Who does that sort of thing for real, and if the answer is you, then Im afraid I will be taking a backward step and letting someone else give you advice on this one.

However, I for one am finding reading this and the other thread highly entertaining whatever the reality behind these threads :D

1. hes not kept in 24/7 he has been out today for a walk bout hes not allowed out with the other horses up the yard where i keep him !!!

2. im guna try the tap on the nose trick

3. ive always wanted a youngster to bring on by myself which i am going to manage

and

4. i was guna get the vets involved anyway so :D

Actually this coukld well be true I see this sort of thing happen regularly.

Ok so OP you have bought a colt. You are inexperianced and I wouldn't have advised you to buy one but you have so now we have to do what is best for him and you.

You need to find him a livery yard where he can be turned out for at least 8hours a day. Preferably 24hrs He is a young horse who can not be ridden or exercised any other way a walk is not sufficient

^^^^^^
above needs to be your priority. It is cruel to keep him other wise. This is not your fault as you were obviously unaware that it is cruel. but now you have been made aware then it would be your fault if you dont fix it.

Get him gelded as soon as you can he will become a much nicer person because of it and he will be happier.

You want to bring this horse on and your are inexperianced. You can do this if you ask for advice and follow it.

Good luck to you but please dont let your horse suffer from your ignorance.

I know it is stressfull to move around but find him proper turnout asap! He will become a nightmare otherwise. Imagine being stuck in your bedroom with no TV 24hrs aday with just a walk round your garden

OP I think you are being serious, unfortunately for the horse :)

It really is unreasonable to expect a young horse to stay in24/7. 'Going out for a walk' is not enough, he needs time and freedom and the company of other horses. If you can't give a young horse these things, you really can't blame it for taking out it's anger and frustration on you. I expect you would bite in the same situation!

You NEED to get him gelded, and turn him out. Like, yesterday!

Please please, for the horses sake, get this sorted :)

If your yard wont let you turn him out, then you need to move.

I am trying to be v constructive here......please take some sound advice!

And in future - DON'T buy a colt, particularly one with retained testicles. Trouble, time and expense!!

1. hes not kept in 24/7 he has been out today for a walk bout hes not allowed out with the other horses up the yard where i keep him !!!

And yet you said:

he is being kept in at all times as all the other horses do up there

"At all times" implies 24/7, does it not? And "as all the other horses do up there" implies there is no "out with the other horses".

2. im guna try the tap on the nose trick

Good luck

3. ive always wanted a youngster to bring on by myself which i am going to manage

I can't think of any better plan for a first time owner. Worth understanding what constitutes coltish behaviour and the very basics of raising a youngster before actually getting one, though, eh?

and

4. i was guna get the vets involved anyway so :D

So...? So you haven't yet? So when is he going to be gelded? Presumably you've arranged an appointment...yes?

Whos nick sulley? I think your winding us up, simple as. I prefer to think your lieing than to believe your actually keeping a horse as you sound like the very worst sort of an owner, an ignorant one. Ignorance leads to suffering. so it cheers me up to think your just giving us something to do, init ;)

Oh, the irony:D

I think you should sell the colt as you obviously do not have the experience, either that or send him back to the dealer who saw you coming.

That's not strictly true. It's not unheard of for yearling colts not to have descended testicles. They may well still drop naturally. However, if this poster is for real they should not be responsible for a colt, gelding, filly or rocking horse. There is little that makes me angrier than an idiot owning a horse. Let's hope it's all a fairy story for the sake of the horse.

sound words

OP - if I were you I would sell your horse (if it actually exists) and consider either getting a rocking horse or taking ballet lessons......less damage to be done to all concerned.

OP has a vet examined your colt yet? If not, there's a good chance that, under sedation, the vet can have a good old feel around and may be able to locate the testicles. If he does have retained testicles, the surgery will be very expensive, and if they are in the abdomen and not the inguinal canal, it will hardly be viable.

Whilst it is academic to discuss, as you say hopefully and most likely it is a story, from what I understand, tescticles retained in the abdomen require surgery as the opening for the testicle to pass from the abdomen into the inguinal canal closes within several weeks of birth. I know if a testicle is retained in the inguinal canal it can descend when the horse is older but I think bilateral retention is always with testicles retained in the abdomen (although it is rare).

You are quite right, if in abdomen an op us the only course of action. But often they stay in the inguinal canal longer than usual and will drop naturally in the end and at 11 months it would be worth waiting a bit longer to see, (if horse in experienced hands of course !!!)
I knew a very knowledgable old breeder years ago and one of his gems of wisdom on the subject of testicles was " there at 6 weeks, gone at 6 months"
I have often found this to be true, if you can feel them at six weeks, sometimes you can't at six months, god knows why. Then they drop back down later but it can be sometime later.

*sighs*

I tried to help:(

You are not helping yourself though, your posts are the only way we can know anything about you. You've asked questions which don't appear to be those that would be asked by someone with experience, you haven't listened to the answers and haven't managed to sort out the advice from those who are knocking you and you can't be bothered to attempt to write in a manner which might suggest that you are anything other than an ignorant and rather stupid teen. Which means that though you may have been round horses nearly all your life you probably have a quarter of the experience of some of the people trying to help you and certainly only a tiny fraction of their horsesense.

But never mind, you obviously think you know best.

Is it summer holidays now????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look OP, if your story is a lie, you are a troll, and getting slammed for it. If it is true, unfortunately you have been very naive and irresponsible and appear to continue to be irresponsible and are therefore going to get slammed, deal with it. If you are so happy with your decision and so sure you are competent enough to deal with the colt, then just get on with it and deal with it, you dont need advice

you know what ill just get advice off websites and actual ppl who will actually help me called friends and kind ppl !!! and im not guna give out my fb details if ya guna lecture me coz ill block ya !!!

poor baby being kept in all the time :(
No wonder you're having issues.

young horses need to be out with others:
a) to play
b) learn social behaviours eg. grooming etc
c) learn manners from older horses

You're not providing any of these things. How cruel :(
Why take a young horse knowing that he would be stuck in this negative environment?!

can anyone help me out my cob colt bites hes 11 months old recently just got him hes not just play biting hes aggressive biting :( and its horrible i dont what to try ive been told loads different tips but which is best to do =/

can anyone help please

xstephiex

watch out for it coming, up your energy , aka make your self big but serious and shake a tin of stones, also i suspect people have like they did with my colts thought he was very cute and where do people touch horses, yup on the nose or play with there lips,so this biting i feel would have started off light hearted and has esculated in what you have today, it drives me mad the way people play with faces of young horses:rolleyes::confused:
however all horses need turnout 24/7 id say for a baby in a mixed herd and let the herd bring him up a little. mta is he still not gelded
