My dogs are becoming socially unacceptable

I would put the two offenders on a lead.

If you dogs ran aggressively up to mine then I would be angry too. I would also allow my dogs to defend themselves however they wish. I have two large gsds one of which hates strange dogs and I do my best to keep him under control so have no sympathy for anyone who dosent who's dog gets bitten. I have spoken to dog warden who agrees the off lead dog is the responsible party.

I would keep on with the training until the recall is 100% :)

I have.

I kept him muzzled and on a long line at all times until his recall was 100%. Your dogs recall is not 100% if he won't come when another dog is around.

The face is i carry bear spray and i know plenty of people that carry cattle prods that would use them on your dogs if they rushed theirs.

My Brittany would tear apart a dog that rushed him like that (which is why he is muzzled and on a long line at all times.

Its about management and continued training especially if you suspect it is fear aggression.

To continue to let it happen only cements in your dogs mind that it was the right thing to do. Its self rewarding behavior.
 
Usually i would go ballistico at OP, and agree with others that meeting you would be my worst nightmare, and depending on the dogs with me (pack too) yours would probably come off worse.

BUT as its my last weekend with OH and im waiting for him to finish in the bath i dont really want to start an argument :)..

Would it be worth asking a landowner local to you if they had any close feilds/paddocks with no footpaths where you could exersize your dogs?.. this may mean loading them up and driving them there (we have to do this now because some idiot woman refuses to put her dog on a lead and it is a shirty little fecker) but it would mean they would ''have fun'' without the risk of bumping into any other dogs.

Otherwise i would invest in two long lines and take the dodgy ones out separately on the lead, better a boring walk than risking your dogs safety and more importantly anyone elses around you
 
So you'r eallowed to disagree that other owners walk their dogs on lead/keep them away from your dogs but they're not allowed to keep their dogs away from yours?
Keep your dogs that go for others on a long line, or walk them at antisocial times, or ina secure field. Or train them better. They are not 100% trained if they do not recall away from distractions (in this case-dogs).
You may think you know they will not harm the other dogs. the other dogs and owners do not know that. What if they were taking a dislike to my infirm blind dog (which I have btw, not making up a scenario)? Or 'having a go' at her? What would you do then?
 
Btw- the way to sort this I think is to start taking offender no.1 to training classes, whilst keeping both offenders on lead. Then move to letting offender no.1 off lead whilst no.2 goes to obedience training classes (give them something to think about and a chance to mix with dogs in a controlled fashion). Agility would also be fine but can be a bit chaotic and might be less helpful.
Would keeping one offender on lead stop the other attacking? Then alternate lead walks?

Sorry to sidetrack- but KL how many doggies do you have, and how come there are no pics of your others, which I suspect to be just as gorge as Mr Abe?

I have Abe and Bryn my Brittany right now.
And i have any number of fosters coming through. I took a break for a while after a foster made in into my heart and then died but now i am back up and running and for my sins have a rat terrier coming in on monday!
Bryn is old and DA so doesn't want to come out to all the places Abe goes so i don't have all that many recent pictures of him. He is usually asleep by the heater in the bedroom :D

OP - if your dogs ran up to mine, who is always on a lead, and acted aggressively it could go one of two ways. Either she would submit and cower on the end of the lead, at which point I would merrily be booting your dogs up the arse and calling you all the names under the sun, or she would defend herself and I wouldn't be particularly inclined to stop her.

If you don't have a reliable recall they need to be on a lead. It is not a death sentence and would probably only be a temporary measure until you can do some one on one training with them.

Thanks folks! I think I have all the advice I need now, some good and some not so but I think I'll go with what some people think and that's to let them off lead seperately so they don't get the 'pack' mentality and get the behaviourist in again to work with me, Liz and the dog she hates the most.
 
I hate using gadgets to train dogs as they rarely fix the problem but if you are desperate to keep them off lead then.... Have you tried putting shock or water spray collars on the two offenders so that if they do bugger off and refuse to come back you can try to regain their attention?

Wow just checked out that site, the stooge dogs are brilliant just what ops dogs need. I think Darcy would benefit as well even though she is getting better and seems to love her friends she never plays with them.:(

OP, as much as I love lurchers, you've got your work cut out with the recall I'm afraid.

If there's a problem, if it can be fixed, Jim Greenwood will fix it. He does workshops and demos in various parts of the country and will give advice over the phone/email.

If it can't be fixed, then for everyone's sake you'll have to manage the issue and keep your dogs on lead.
