MY EMW THREAD

By far the majority of horses aren't chipped over here, as it isn't complusory (passports - pah! missed opportunity) and scanning is patchy to say the least. A policeman told me that a well known regular market has a scanner which hasn't been out of its box in 9 years - they are worried that the sellers will go and do deals outside the sale yard if they start picking up on stolen horses. Freezebrand is preferred by the police as it is immediately visible.
Is chipping compulsory in France? Is that part of the passport system then?

Chipping is compulsory from this year for all equides, but passports are not.....everything we've bought from a dealer, or the market, is chipped with the appropriate papers, but that is all.
Passports are necessary to compete, but not obligatory otherwise.
I am stunned that it is not compulsory in the UK. It is for racehorses, so I assumed it was all horses. I thought it was an EU directive, but obviously not. It should be, no wonder the dealers/dodgepots can steal and ship horses so easily.

Thank you naturally for your offer! I have PM'd you.

Hi Gonetofrance - "EU Member States have reached agreement on a new European Regulation that will revise existing equine identification [Horse Passport] legislation. The main new requirement is the compulsory microchipping of foals born after 1 July 2009".
For article on this please see:
http://www.voicesforhorses.co.uk/news/re...f-equines..html

Have I understood you correctly that passports are not compulsory in France? is that because France uses microchipping?

Emma

Hi Emma, as far as I know that's the case. Any of the dealers we spoke to at the market who referred to the horse/pony having a passport seemed to infer it was a bonus... obviously for extracting more cash from buyers.
The dealers had made the effort to have them chipped, so if it was a legal requirement I expect they would have had passports also.
BUT I don't know this for actual fact.
I'll try and find out for sure.

I do know it is now illegal to own any unchipped equine, and it carries a fine of 450 euros.

Interesting article....very EU. Compulsory chipping unless they do something else....

This is a very good informative thread. Well Done all those interested in helping horses and improving their welfare.

I think it is about time they bought in something that helps to identify equines. All mine are chipped & both colts were done as foals when they were vaccinated. If all this info is fed into NED then there is at least one central DB which can only be a good thing.

What a wasted opportunity (and waste of all our money) passports were/are. It might have worked if there had been one central database, but with so many, if you come across an equine with no passport, there is no real way to retrieve it or establish wther it ever had one.
Those less scrupulous than us must have been so amused and entertained by the prospect of incinerating one they didn't like and getting another from another issuing authority - and it cost us all more than a lot of people could comfortably afford.

I never understood the passport insistence.....one small fat hairy unmarked bay looks very like any other......Over here now they won't slaughter an unchipped animal...I suppose that is not the case in the UK?
It makes no odds to the dealers here, 40 euros puts a chip in, and for the money commanded in Italy for meat, it's a drop in the ocean.

The UK and Ireland really did mess up it's breeding system by not getting thair acts together soon enough. (I've been saying this for years, BTW, I'm not saying because I've just moved away!) All the different societies wanting their stud book to be definitive. There are a lot of things that I don't like about the French ways of doing things, but their stud book is similar to Wetherbys in how it is managed, and information on registered stallions and offspring is much easier to access, so papered horses cannot be clocked etc.

Some of the dealers I used to know in the UK had drawers full of passports, to prevent the new owners tracing the history of their new purchase.

The chipping is AFAIK, the best way, as it would be difficult to change. But again it needs to be thought through; the dog chips issued in the UK have to be reregistered in a different country, and given a new identity reference otherwise the number cannot be traced......

Hi Nuffeld I am glad you find this thread interesting because I am aware we have strayed from the original topic of JM offering EMW help. I hope that is ok for all those who were/are following this thread.

Magic 104 you said “I think it is about time they bought in something that helps to identify equines. All mine are chipped & both colts were done as foals when they were vaccinated. If all this info is fed into NED then there is at least one central DB which can only be a good thing.”

I totally agree with you. My concern is the equestrian community will be led to believe compulsory microchipping will help with identification in relation to equine welfare and security when I have not seen any evidence to support this. To my knowledge - just like the passports it is only being introduced to comply with EU legislation.

I agree JillA that passports were a wasted opportunity which is why I believe it is important to put pressure on governing bodies not to miss or ignore the opportunity to maximize the potential of microchipping.

Gonetofrance.

In answer to your earlier question - equines in the UK can be slaughtered without a microchip.

I am assuming as France has compulsory microchipping this may be why passports are not mandatory (?) it would be great to gets to grips with French legislation on this because I believe there are lessons that can be learnt by comparing the strengths and weaknesses of current EU legislation and how it is currently implemented across EU states. I believe pressure needs to be put on our governing bodies to not just comply with EU regulations but integrate a robust identification and dare I say it even tracking system. The technology is available.

no problem VFH..This is exactly what i wanted to happen with the Original Thread..lots of input/debate about how to go forward with help/interest in what went on at markets...
at least it's been kept to topic...AND civil..

can anyone tell me where market drayton is?

I still have donated items left over from the fundraising we did. Am more than happy, if not too far (ie within an hours drive of leicestershire), to come up and bring it all. Lots of tack and stuff and can try and get more together too.

I believe you're about an hour away from Derby(?), which in turn, is about an hour from me (I'm 10 minutes away from Market Drayton).

Of course, you could always combine it with a visit to me, have a bite to eat and a natter, and come and meet Snowy.

Jill, I will get sorting out, arrange a convenient time with you, and pick up some literature when I drop off to you.

If anyone else has unwanted items of tack or rugs etc. they are always very welcome - what we don't use we sell to raise funds. If you aren't within easy reach of me here in north east Shropshire, you may be closer to Bromyard, the Herefordshire (and main) sanctuary. You can contact Elaine there via the contact details on the web site (www.emwuk.org.uk).
Alternatively we do have supporters all over the country who could receive items and pass them on at the first opportunity, and also a couple of horse transporters who travel all over the UK are very helpful. Distance no object!!
Just let us know and we will see what we can sort out, you may need to be a bit patient while we appeal for a lift though.
