Yesterday was the first day of officialy working at my riding school! I managed to not get kicked, and found it ok. I am slightly dissapointed as I had to do about 30 odd hay nets which took forever. However I did some leading of the horses, water some, and helped out in a lesson. However I am slightly dissapointed. I am not allowed to tack/untack, groom, go in a stable, and some others, So it wasnt as good as I hoped. Ive been told we have to do a payed test, Starting at Grade A and working upwards. I am ringing tomorrow, to let them know ill be in next sunday and will be riding, I also want to find out when grade a starts.
I was observing the lesson and keeping an eye on everyone, All day I had been fussing this one horse, Brody. She was tied to the other side of the fence than the other horses because of her bad temperement, during the lesson she kept coming over to me instead of doing what the teacher was saying

That made me feel loved

. Twas a grate day but I was restricted to what I was allowed to do.

lol have to start at the bottom to get to the top!! i once worked at a riding school and there was a foot of snow out side so i alone had to make up haynets for all the horses while the other girl i was with who is scared of horses got to grrom them etc. but oh well at the end of it i was put on a 16.2hh tb who she refused to ride and go out for a lovely hack in the snow and i rode him brilliantly!! woop woop!!

she was so wary of the horses that i ended up leading three ponies on a road to there field because she decided to let her one go!!!

sounds tough but at least you know when you do come to ride you have had an excellent grounding and will knwo far more than people who just come once a week and ride. Keep in there, it will get better, surely there must be lots of girls to chat to too!!!!

Are you working as a paid employee or as a voluntary (sp)?helper???

There will be many things that you may not be allowed to do on the grounds of health and safety etc.

Dont worry about the gossips, they will soon be your friends and are probably just working out what sort of person you are.

Good luck and I hope you carry on a nd enjoy it.

I bet you find that they give you more to do once you have shown you are reliable and competent. They will have to make sure that you are safe for both Health and Safety and Insurance reasons.

Have fun!

yeah i guess that happens, just ignore it - trust me when you are older you will be the coolest boy knowing about horses! you must put a pic up of your fave horse.

You have to prove to them that you are keen and competent and that you can be trusted to do things properly.... you also have to appreciate that they probably dont have the time to follow you all the time to make sure you are safe too!!

You will soon get into the swing of it.... I remember my first few weeks.. they were hellish. And that was 30 years ago when health and safety hadnt been invented.

We had someone fall off the muck heap and dislocate their shoulder, another broke arm coz one of the helpers hadnt dont the girth up properly, I broke a toe being trodden on in trainers etc etc............. and did anyone sue.... no way.

But these days its such a different situation, the riding school owners are scared to let helpers do anything vaguely exciting or interesting.

Don't worry about not being allowed to do much- I worked as a helper for a few years and was quite frustrated by it at the beginning, but the more they assess your ability the more they will let you do. Don't worry about the girls gossiping either- it's probably quite unusual for them to be working with a guy! But it's true, when you're older horsey girls will LOVE you for being horsey!

LMao, The rumour just happens to be I fancy "R" and she fancies me :S Twas queer,my first day and "S" making some hay nets with me said it, and I asked her what made her think that, and she said I thought you liked her yet she doesnt know me :S

Poor you, i hate doing haynets (and I am rubbish at it), so I don't envy you that one ! i am sure that as time goes on and they get to know you better and know what you are capable of, you will get to do the more fun things like grooming and tacking up.

The msot important thing is, though...DO you fancy R?
