Having always been a serial lurker but avid follower of this forum but never really feeling I had anything interesting to post I think that might have changed today.

I keep my horses horses (my horse, one retired pony, my daughter's horse and my friend's horse) at home. I mucked out the boxes and turned them all out. All very happy as grass was at last appearing through the snow. Went in the house and with the intention of going off to the the supermarket. Car keys in my hand. Heard my dog barking furiously outside, called her whereupon she carried on barking at me. Thought I had better check outside and saw that the other three horses were looking rather agitated by the swimming pool. Wondering how on earth they got out and how they had got into the fenced bit by the pool and then saw my lovely boy in the deep end with just his head poking through a gap in the pool cover, shaking uncontrollably surrounded by mini-icebergs. You can imagine the unbelievable panic I went through. The cover that he had gone through you are supposed be able to drive a car onto but obviously doesn't withstand a rather overweight cob! Didn't know what to do first. Got the other horses back in the field while dialling 999 for the fire brigade. Rushed back to Merlin who has neighing at me frantically and obviously struggling. Tried to pull the cover off to see if I could tear it but it wasn't budging. Rushed back into the house got a sharp knife, got in the pool and where it had already been torn managed to cut the cover right up until the steps at the shallow end. Give Merlin an almighty tug on this forelock he swam and then walked up
the steps and galloped across the garden. Caught him, towelled him down, covered him in rugs called the vet who pronounced him relatively unscathed but not suprsingly a little cold. Fire brigade turned up ten minutes later and were quite impressed by my rescue.

After two large gin and tonics and several glasses of wine have just about calmed down. Just been out to check him again for the twentieth time and he seems absolutely fine. Can't promise I'll ever have anything quite as dramatic to post again but thought I would share it with you. Well done Merlin for being so brave and especially my super dog who deserves a medal!

OMG that sounds scary, i was almost wetting myself reading it!

Good for merlin aka lassie for raising the alarm.
Brilliant rescue, well done for keeping a calm head in a crisis. i think you would need a few drinks after that.
Hope horsey has recovered from his swim.
Don't wait for another drama before posting again though

Hells Bells MM!!!!! WOW. Well done you! That was so brave (yep, think most of us would have attempted it - madly) Just try not to think about it too much or it will give you nightmares!
Our pool is not fenced off - wish it was, but not our property - and I have had a few escapees running round the pool! Makes me shiver!

Make sure you give your dog a big treat tonight!

Good gracious! That's a hell of an opening post!

Well done you for getting him out, and well done doggy for alerting you! One of our old ponies many years ago escaped into a neighbours swimming pool. Fortunately it was not covered, and also different because said pony opted to go for a swim. He'd cracked all the tiles - and by this we could see that the route he had taken was down the steps into the pool. He was found happily swimming around.

*really do think it's time I went to bed...*

Nope. I wasn't, sadly. She got herself out thankfully. First I knew about it was the funny black bits in her tail, hind legs and on her rug. Then I noticed the foot prints on the pond and the big hole in the ice.

Don't know why/how she did it. She was wet up to her withers, from her back end. Sooo lucky.

She has one skin flap wound to her left hind, but the others are very small grazes. I think she'll be fine when it's healed. Just going to take a few weeks I guess.

Could've been worse. No idea how she got back out as there's a clean hole in the ice. It must've held her weight again as she climbed out. Just don't know how she got a purchase on the slippery surface. She's also lucky she didn't succumb to hypothermia, given how cold it was.

Doesn't bear thinking about what might have been.

God that's pretty scary. Thanks goodness she managed to get herself out. You are so right in that it doesn't bear thinking about. Glad that the injuries seem superficial. Hope she is feeling better soon x.

Well done for staying calm...

I'd have flapped for England and got nowhere!!

Anymore interesting happenings, or anything at all, keep us posted!!!

Jeeeez thats a bit scary, well done for sorting it out. I bet you were a bit chilly after too!! Thank goodness hes ok! and welcome!!!

Wow - well done dog, they can be clever when they want to be.

And well done you for getting him out - naughty pony frightening his mum and making her turn to drink!!

Goodness me, absolute terrifying situation to deal with especially when on your own but well done to you for coping and a safe rescue and your dog for being so intelligent! Really hope your horse is OK. We're never going to forget you now MM!

Patches - that sounds much worse! Hope the she gets better soon.

Noo...not much worse at all. I would say yours is more scary as it's nigh on impossible for a large animal (or any animal) to find their own way out of a swimming pool. Luckily my mare could climb out of the pond at the shallow edge.
