I think the point of the OP of the OP (if that makes sense!) was when somebody wants to buy an average horse to do local events, and are quoted 4 - 5k to get anything decent. Actually, I think everyone who's posted here knows this, and just want an excuse to shout about how expensive their animals are. Knock yourselves out
My mare was £850. I saved that money over months and months, and bought her because she was everything I wanted. I broke her myself and am confident that she will do anything I want because she has a huge heart, and I beleive would try to please to the absolute limit of her ability. Of course if you are aiming for high levels of competition it is smart to look for good breeding and ability, and that almost always costs more money. But I do beleive that anybody with an ordinary horse with the right instruction could compete successfully at local levels.. and thats what the majority of us want
