My horse has cost a lot of money and I am proud.

I think the point of the OP of the OP (if that makes sense!) was when somebody wants to buy an average horse to do local events, and are quoted 4 - 5k to get anything decent. Actually, I think everyone who's posted here knows this, and just want an excuse to shout about how expensive their animals are. Knock yourselves out

My mare was £850. I saved that money over months and months, and bought her because she was everything I wanted. I broke her myself and am confident that she will do anything I want because she has a huge heart, and I beleive would try to please to the absolute limit of her ability. Of course if you are aiming for high levels of competition it is smart to look for good breeding and ability, and that almost always costs more money. But I do beleive that anybody with an ordinary horse with the right instruction could compete successfully at local levels.. and thats what the majority of us want

Do we really give a flying piece of smelly stuff as to who paid what for their horse/s?

If you've paid a couple of hundred quid and your horse does the job - great.

If you've paid a few grand and your horse does the job - great.

Although I must admit, my version of expensive is £15k plus, reasonable is 3k-5k.

As has been said, it is all relative

. I wouldn't pay 5K for something to hack around on or do local shows, but others probably do; but then they possibly only have 1 horse so they can spend a bit more on buying it in the first place?

I would love my budget when buying new horses to be under 1K, but it just isn't going to happen, at least not as often as I need. I'm an opportunist, I can see what some sellers have, they can't, and as such I believe I still buy them for a steal but that is only because I can generally sell them for quite a bit more after putting in a bit of work and taking them to some shows to get them seen.

Some people can't see potential and as such buy a "made" RC horse, these are the ones which are generally upwards of 5K.

Agree with you Tia. I got mine for so little because although she was a registered NF, she was newly broken & had only been hacked. She needed work & actually needed to be turned away & re-broken a year later.

But having been brought on slowly by me & then locally shown by a friend & schooled over a few jumps etc she's now the ideal small teens pony club pony.

If you're willing to by a youngster & bring it on yourself & then sell it, I guess that's where the prices come from as you said.

I personally wouldn't spend £5k but it seems acceptable now! Ty cost me £2500 and he turned out to be blind and have spavins. Oscar cost me £3000 and he has a few quirks but is a fantastic jumper and has great paces....even my warmblood obsessed mates (2 of them) said they'd take him off my hands. And he's a nasty old TB...that cost under £5000.

That said, when OH is looking we'll probably have to spend £5k as he'll need something 16.3 plus that will carry a 6ft rugby player....so he's narrowing his market.

I've known people spend £10000 on something they're too scared to ride so I think whatever suits you is great.

I realise OP was tongue in cheek, but I do love the way people have to justify spending so much on a horse....

If you have the money and you want to spend massive amounts on a high standard comp horse because that's what you want to do, Then why not, best of luck to (just wish i had the money to join you

).

What i think is daft is so spend silly amounts on a horse just as a fun horse, just so you can brag about the amount the horse is worth. No sorry i don't think it daft i just think that type of person is not worth worrying about.

Oh I don't know if people really do that, do they? I think if someone asks you how much you paid for your horse, then you are going to tell them the truth surely? No way out of saying what you paid unless you lie. I don't know anyone who goes around bragging about how much a horse cost them, they just tell me, and I just accept it; no big deal. I suspect it is more the receiver of the information who gets all uppity about it, rather that the giver who is quite at ease with spending whatever they spent.

15k wouldnt get you a horse that would go to burghley or the next olympics necessarily. If you wanted a made prospect fro burghley etc, its more like 30k.
