We seem to be seeing a lot of posts accusing us of snobbery if we own expensive horses and compete reasonably seriously. Yet until this post I have yet to see any posts to this effect . Funny that, wonder why

So I'd just like to say that yes I have a very expensive horse, he is worth every penny and I do don't really care if others think I am a considered a snob!

Me to! I spent all of my inheritance (sp) on Jack plus my uni fund!! I am very pround! He looks expensive, jumps expensive and bl00dly well was expensive! He's ace, I love him and he loves me!!!
 
also....!.. I wouldn't mind if anyone thought I was a snob for owning him, when it comes to Jack, I paid for the right to be a snob!

So, what constitutes expensive? ... I'm curious as one man's expensive may be another man's reasonable.
Or did this get discussed in the previous post.
 
Well going by recent comments and no I can't be bothered to find them all my (post is tongue in cheek) about £3k and really expensive if you pay over £5k.

I honestly beleive you would not be able to buy and sound and healthy well mannered young horse(under 12, but backed and well started) over 16hh cpable of competing above disco BSJA/Ele BD/PN Eventing for less than £5k

If you have one and they stay sound I can hand on heart say you have done very well abd you were very lucky.

Possibly in eventing you may get lucky with a TB, the pros will tell you that for everyone one that does make it many have soundness/temp issues and it can be a real lottery.
 
What do you class as a lot of money?

Are you proud of him because he cost of a lot of money or because he is able to perform to a high level?
 
Oh well then both my horses are in the 'expensive' bracket, wahay,
although if i was asked what you call and expensive horse i would have said £20K plus.
Its just horses for courses,

In honesty, I'd say between £3k and £8k is reasonable, well it is down this end of the country anyway! lol!

At the end of the day, horses are expensive full stop and I personally don't think it matters how much you initially spend, anyone who feels that they can judge a person based on the price of their horse is just plain sad!
 
Blooming heck, I didn't think that was expensive, 3k to 4 1/2k is not expensive, over that and it is too much for me, but I guess it depends on each individual, we paid more for my sisters mare than mine, but she is exactly what my sister wanted and they suit each other. Good quality tack came with her as well and a pretty comprehensive wardrobe too. The value of a horse is what you are willing to pay for it.
 
Well then my pony is in the expensive bracket too then as was more than 3k but not much more but people might think that was alot for a 5yr old pony - i classify expensive as over 7k.
 
You pay for what the horse can do in my opinion. If you've bought a horse for under 7K that can compete above average and go on further then that's average. If you pay between 2k - 3.5K for a general alround hack then I'd say that's average. If you pay 15K I'd expect to see you at Burley and possibly competing at the next olypics. If not then you are not a snob just more money than sense, the sort dealers love lol.
 
We own, and have owned, many of the 6-10k bracket, they were worth the money and for cheaper we would not have got these horses. If you can't afford them, not my problem, if you beat me on a cheaper horse, well done, once I have it home I don't care how much mine or yours cost, just that I enjoy him!
 

I don't care what a horse cost. If it was right for me in every way then I couldn't give a toss if it cost me 50p or £5,000.

I don't know about the OP but I have my horse because I enjoy her. Not because of how much she cost (£400 if anyone is really bothered) or what she can or can't do but because she is mine & I worked bl00dy hard to keep her. Literally hung onto her by a thread when I nearly couldn't afford to keep her & had to contemplate selling her.

I've been offered over £4,000 twice for her & over £3,000 once but no money on earth could replace what she means to me so I politely told them she was not for sale & never would be for sale.

Yes, she is talented & yes she is pretty & yes, she is too talented for me & could have done much more with a good rider but I'm sure she doesn't care how many rosettes she comes home with or to what level she competes at.

Horses should not be material possessions.

I was thinking expensive was around 15K, I certainly don't see 3K as being expensive ... many of my seller ons cost me that price to purchase in the first place and I see that as going rate and not expensive, however I can see the huge potential the horses I buy have .. and then I utilise it! What I see as expensive is what I sell my little 3K horses for and rarely is that less than the 10K mark. Very often my horses don't even have to be advertised - word of mouth seems to do the trick.

If I was a private buyer who was looking for a quality, nicely trained horse, would I buy a 10K horse from me? Yep I sure would; no matter if it seemed expensive, I would buy it for the training, breeding, blah blah! I think my horses are worth every penny, and obviously so do my customers

Agree with Tinkerbell I'm not in a position to spend a lot of money on a horse, but that doesn't make me any less proud of mine. - I love my horse, although I wouldn't say he was expensive. He does what I want and is fun to look after and that's all I care about.
My friend paid £400 for her Welsh D and couldn't be prouder of him (and quite right too, he's a star).

There is far too much emphasis is all walks of life about how much things cost and how many material things we have.
 
My mare cost me 3K (which i think is cheap) she is 10yrs and had never XC before i bought her, which was just short of 2 yrs ago now.

I have just stepped up to PN and finish 11th on my first outing ( i only do 3 BE's a year due to finances) and will hopefully be doing novice at the end of next year (all going well) she will probably never go over novice, but then i don't have the money either to get more serious, so she suits me fine. I am more than proud on my girly.

My point being, just because you have this lovely expensive horse don't mean you're any better than a cheaper one. Yes it does help, but so does a good rider.

From these posts I find it really interesting that people think a horse priced above 10k is expensive. That is because the high end horses (yes, horses get sold for hundreds of thousands!) don't get sold with the rest, but are generally sourced for particular clients and lets face it, for a lot of professionals/owners of top horses, if the price is right they will sell.

I'd say what is 'expensive' is totally relative to the buyer's circumstances and what they need out of their horse.

Couldn't give a rats arse who paid what for what, I have better things to think about, like Christian Bale in nothing but a smile...
 
You will not get an Olympic horse for 15k. Are you mad?? Decent competition horses ready to go and competing well cost over 10k. Ones with problems to work through you can get for less. A young potential olympic horse will cost you upwards of 100k. Now THAT is expensive. Yes I paid 15k for one of my horses, but I do not consider that expensive as she is extremely talented and she is fantasticly bred.

It is not about how much it costs, You could pay 3k for something that ends up lame all the time, or you could pay 3k for something that actually does the job. A horse is only worth what someone will pay for it. It generally has nothing to do with having more money than sense (other than some of the pony club people I used to know who paid 10k for a horse that cudn't even canter properly and looked like a mule). Some people have no money and no sense.

Unless you are lucky and find a real rough diamond you generally get what you pay for.
