My horse is a sheepskin addict! - help!

Hello horsey people!

Just to say straight away, I had his back and saddle checked, he's fine in every way, it's just he obviously prefers sheepskin!

My rising 6 PRE gelding seems to be very tense to work in anything else but his LeMieux half lined saddlepad, which is fine, but I'm thinking of summer coming and wondering what am I to do with him? Would you think a sheepskin halfpad could be a substitute or would it not work since it's not touching his skin if I wear a thin numnah? I'm thinking of a halfpad because it would allow me to wash his numnahs more often.

Any suggestions? Any similar experiences? Thank you!

Maybe it's just the time of year. Is he clipped?? If he is, once his hair has grown back, you might get away with a normal numnah!!! or maybe just a very soft numnah!!!

In the summer we wash our Nuumed 1/2 pads once or twice a week and throughout the winter they are washed and are still in good condition

As an alternative to sheepskin I find the HKM gently range very soft against their back. I usually get them from here. Looks like she is not keeping all the different colours in stock but will order on request. They do one for GP saddles too - got a lovely green one edge in gold which looks fab on my bright bay.

ok! thanks guys! Do you think that a sheepskin half pad would not help if he likes the feeling of half lined saddlecloth?

If he likes sheepskin, he may be happy with a half pad. I was just thinking if you were worried about sheepskin being too hot in the summer or being more difficult to wash what else was out there.
Wasn't meant to sound like a half pad wouldn't work.

You can put them in the washing machine as although they are made from sheep's wool, they don't have the sheepskin part. I have never had a problem with them rubbing or with the horse getting hot and bothered. The horse will sweat but as long as you brush off any dry sweat before the next use or wash it, it should be fine.

thanks, I haven't tried prolite, are they good? I have tried using a thick soft numnah instead of a half lined sheepskin and it didn't work, so I'm suspecting he likes sheepskin against his skin :/ expensive tastes, I'd say!

why can't you keep his normal sheepskin pad on in summer?

Millie has sheepskin and wears it all year round and it doesn't cause any issues when it is hot.

that's also an option, it's just that at the moment I have only 1 sheepskin, which in the winter was fine since he was clipped and rugged so very clean all the time + didn't sweat really, but now the weather's milder and the sheepskin is coming up sweaty, which is fine per se, but if I wash the sheepskin I don't have anything to ride in until that's dry. Plus I have a lot of matchy matchy and I thought a half pad could enable me to show off shamelessly while keeping the sheepskin theme and also then I'd have to wash the numnahs not the half pad!
the only thing that worries me is that in this case the sheepskin won't be touching his skin, hence it might not work. I guess I'll have to try.

Prolites are very good, although expensive I have found they are well worth the money. They are also good if your horse changes shape as you can add or take out any extra padding.
