Last night whilst having a lesson in the indoor school my lovely hairy coblet tripped on thin air and fell quite badly down on both knees. Obviously I was then about 1 foot away from crashing down on the floor. But what did she do? She immediately sprung herself back up and not only that she then proceeded to kind of nudge me back into the saddle by shoving her head high up thus saving me from a fall.

Everyone watching was totally amazed by her actions and I was so very proud of her. She is such a honest little mare and I love her more every day.

I gave her a lovely massage after this and applied tea tree oil to her knees just to make sure she was ok.........and of course gave her some treats and carrots and so many cuddles I lost count.

So guys have your horses ever done anything like this before to save you?

Awwww! How sweet!

I had a horse once that spooked violently sideways, realised he was about to lose me and threw himself back to the other side effectively scooping me up. My instructor said the look on his face when he realised he was about to deposit me was priceless!

Bless. My horse routinely saves me from my rubbish riding at SJ courses. I can't count the number of times she has contorted herself to get her legs out of the way, when I've ridden like a total spanner and gone on a terrible stride.

Not quite the same, but saves much embarrassment on my part!

I know someone who isn't terribly skillful as a rider

but goes hunting twice a week - his horse actually catches him when landing after a jump. You can see her thinking 'is he going left or right?' Totally generous animal if you ask me.

Would love a video of this...

My horse catches me when I jump her bareback. I don't do it very often and only over small fences but my riding instructor said she could see her repositioning me after the jump so that I didn't end up on her neck.

Oh jesus, so would I

I'm sure it would net the £250 on You've Been Framed! rather cringeworthy to watch though. I do the hunting livery for the mare, she's a saint

Not quite a saviour, but a very honest horse indeed...I was at a 3* event in NZ. There was a water complex with two massive white rails bouncing in, 3 strides to a step up, log back down into water again, 5 strides through more water and then another step, stride to a rail and out. Poor little horse hit the first rail jumping in and flipped into the water. He was completely submereged along with his rider. He re-emerged, minus rider, turned himself round and jumped the whole rest of the complex, bang on the right line, and then scooted off into the countryside! Ive never seen anything like it! There was no reason whatsoever for him to do it, he wasnt even facing the right way, and the right line wasnt heading towards the lorry park or anything! What a horse!

When i first got my boy we were having a jumping lesson and he tripped about 3 strides out from a sizable oxer, he was on one knee and his nose touched the sand, i just thought we were gonna missed the jump, to my surprise he just picked himself (and a slightly unbalenced me) up and popped it. I was amazed at his honesty as he had only been jumping a few months at that point, he is and absolute sweetheart!

err no i think my horse would find it funny to get me off and he certainly doesnt hang about on the few times he has got me off!!one of the best was hunting going under a low tree i was leaning down to one side and he very kindly lept the other way so i just shot out the side door... then off he went!lol! and instead of following the hunt he went off on his own to explore a nearby council estate. hmmmmmm!!so im jealous of your lovely generous kind horse!!!

Raff is also my hero for EXACTLY the same thing. i was 7 months pregnant and out hacking, he tripped, i flew up his neck and he carefully pushed me back. as he tried to get his footing back, he put his foot down a rabbit hole and tripped badly again... this time falling onto both knees, twisting his leg, and nose-butting the floor. i literally ended up on his ears, bu, despite being in a total knot he managed to push me back again... i jumped straight off and the poor monkey was lame... that day gave me so much faith in him.

aren't they amazing little things? (esp compared to my last horse who went out of her way to get me on the ground...)

Well my horse saves me frequently from the rubish strides i put him on... and i actually think he is quite clever some times... really looks after us both if the ground is a bit iffy by keeping his pace to what is safe and sensible for that place...

this is the classic HERO moment for me... and there was mention of a video about... welll this is him catching me and making it home clean when im basically upside down in the saddle! we finished as reserve champion that day... memories.... (2007... ive really worked hard on my legs strength since then so no comments please... !)

If I fall off the first thing he does is stick his nose in my face and sniff me to make sure I'm ok

I fell off on a hack once and broke my foot, got back on and rode back to the yard (which took about an hour), and Dylan - who is normally quite joggy and annoying on the way back - walked like an absolute angel. I think he could tell I wasn't balanced properly.
Another time he spooked and I almost came off (was hanging off the side with one stirrup and my head about 18 inches off the ground), and the next thing I knew I was back in the saddle the right way up. To this day I have no idea how I got there, but I'm assuming ponio had something to do with it!

I was out riding on my own on my old girl (who was sadly pts in May 2008) and we were going down a very steep hill when she tripped and fell over onto her side, as we were on a narrow track my right leg was trapped under her body with my right shoulder wedged under the ridge of the track. I was knocked unconcious (sp) and when i came too she was still lay on top of me very very still. I thought she was dead !!

I must have laid there for about 15 mins trying not to panic (my mobile phone was in my pocket underneath her), the way i was lay i could not see her face but i could see that her belly was rising and falling and therefore knew she was at least still breathing. A dog walker happened to come across me and rang for an ambulance, he told me my mare was alive, thank god. When the paramedics arrived (which was about 15 mins later) and after re-arranging me slightly, one of the guys asked my mare to get up which she very carefully did and he led her away, there was absolutly nothing wrong with her.

He said he had seen this situation before and that my mare was a wise old girl who knew if she had got up without assistance would have really hurt me and so she had just lain still.

Still brings tears to my eyes, gawd i'm even filling up typing this.
