I'm taking the raw diet very seriously and have been to three supermarkets and one butchers today.

The butcher was fabulous and told me where to buy green tripe (looking forward to that one!) and gave me bones. I asked for one for the 'big dog' meaning he's grown up, not meaning he's capable of dealing with bones the size of a mammoth's shin! He's currently hoicking it round the kitchen floor and there's lots of blood on his paws and the floor. Euw. Zak and Bear are thoroughly enjoying this although Zak's clearly a bit bored and annoying everyone now and again. They've had chicken wings and lamb's liver today. I've got rid of the rubbish commercial dog kibble and have realised that we don't really need feed bowls anymore.

LOL my kitchen floor had liver on it this morning and my dining room carpet got raw chicken on it last night. We need the food bowls because at least its a place to start and return the bits of dead animal too. Pips hasn't really got on with the frozen mince stuff we bought. But Chicken wings, human meat (not literally human grade meat!) past its best and chicken livers are generally what she is having. Chicken wings the staple.
But I told the vet she was on raw and the vet still gave her 3 huge kibbly biscuits. Wasn't sure what would happen but she hadn't had breakfast before we went (not that organised with small child too) and was in the morning so had a good twelve hours before next meal but Grrrr do vets know nothing. Will take my own treats next time some cheese or hotdog. Do you think the vet will approve

The dogs were in heaven!

I'm going to tell my vet next time we go in and I will tell him not to feed kibble treats. I'm surprised at how many people are complaining that their vet doesn't offer raw if a dog needs to stay overnight or isn't aware of the rules like no kibble on the same day etc.

Does anyone know, tho, if you can feed Orijen (no grain!) with the raw diet or should that be different days, too?

Any dry dog food needs to be fed apart from raw.

I still feed things like chicken, mince and tripe in bowls so it seems like a 'feed' to me more than the dogs I guess. But anything that is likely to get dragged about gets fed on the patio - don't fancy carcass coated carpets much :D

I don't have a dog (yet!), but am very interested in feeding raw. Can you tell me why kibble/dry feed should not be given on the same day as raw? Should the same principle be applied to feeding kibble and tinned on the same day?

I have also seen references to BARF, which I am guessing is an acronym (maybe for Bones And Raw Feed?) - can anyone tell me more - or link me to another relevant thread to save repetition! Many thanks!

There is a sticky at the top of the page which has a wealth of information in it

Kibble should not be feed near raw because the digestion rates are very different. A dogs system is made to digest and get meat out quickly where as kibble is not natural for them so it takes hours and hours to digest. As you can imagine if you have got kibble making a slow exit and them meat wanting to get out quick it can cause a blockage.

Thanks Katielou_Houston - thought it must be something like that.

Hadn't thought to look at the stickies - will go and do so now...

Never had any problems re stopages here folks;been feeding this way for at least fifteen years now;a typical supper would be a big handful of head meat/tripe ,half a chook carcase, maybe a raw egg and a scattering of some sort of kibble. On a lazy day it would be either a lamb flap or a whole chook carcase. We had one obstruction just once,an atlas vertebrae off a sheep`s neck swallowed whole which stuck at the bottom of petal`s oesophagus, took surgery to get it out..but she was fine. After that lamb`s necks always had the atlas removed before the dog got to it!

I'm reading this all with interest (so I apoligise for my ignorant question) but I thought a chicken carcass, ie chicken bones easily cause dogs to choke??? Or do they only become brittle and dangerous once cooked?

Its ok to say it has never happened for you but i know at least 25 dogs that have had blockages and i just don't think its safe for new feeders to even think about feeding the two together.

I will not be feeding together. Brig had Orijen today and puppies had raw and a bit of rice due to diarrhoea. They're fed in different areas so no cross over. I wouldn't dare risk mixing the two-too paranoid!
