and yeah hes broken hes just a happy hacker. i want to show him next year but he needs a bit of schooling over winter coz he doesnt seem to see why he should go round and round in circles he completley switches off
 
He's lovely, but I have to say that what he is doing with the gate is very very dangerous.

If I were you I would section the gate off with electric fencing so that he can't get near it, or fill it in completely with a panel of wood.

You wouldn't want to come down one day and find him with his leg stuck in it.

Sorry, not being horrible but gates and horses who stick their legs through them are not a good mix.
 
We've fenced the gap between the paddock and gate with electric fencing when we had to get the blacksmith back for the 4th time in 3 weeks!! So he can't do it on the gate now but I caught him trying it the rails of the paddock til I screamed at him. Don't think he's intentionally pullin them off he gets legs mites and I think it's them he's scratchin at
 
Cracking little horse - well done you.

Word of warning, though, you need to wire up that fence, as it's a broken leg waiting to happen if the horse has a habit of putting his hoof through it.
 
That's great. The reason I am so aware of the dangers of gates is that my friend's pony got her leg stuck through impatience, the friend was on her own (no-one to lift gate off hinges) and she thought she had almost lost her which she would have done if the pony hadn't managed to free herself.

So get rid of the mites - is he under treatment from the vets & why haven't you removed his feather if treatment hasn't worked?
 
He is absolutely gorgeous and looks really well and happy- really pleased for him he has a great new home! good luck with him :)
 
Well done you for giving him a safe home!

If you're having probs with mites, try Frontline Spot On solutuin. I know it's meant for dogs but I used it on my mare after recommendations from loads of other people and it works. Apply it to his legs though - you may have to shave a little bit of hair off to get it on the skin,
 
We've tried treatments from the vets he has dectomac injections which in the vets advice kills the mites but not the eggs so he's always gonna have the cycle there. We know when he's got them coz he gets scabs behind his knees but even when the scabs aren't there and he's had his injection he still rubs. Think it's just his habit. We've tried the pig oil thing and it just makes all the dust cling to his legs we trimmed his feathers last year it made no difference. Vets advice was control it which we do so aside from strapping his legs together there doesn't seem much more we can do
 
He is a lovely lucky boy! Good luck showing him I am sure you will do well. Do you know what he looked like when he was rescued, might be interesting to see before and after.
 
looking happy and round. i would board the gate with a sheet of wood as he could break his leg very easily, or do a tendon etc etc. as for the mites i would get vet to inject with dectomax (fist inj), repeat in 2 weeks, repeat in 4 weeks, then 1 inj every 4 to 6 months. if there are no live mites there will be no eggs! shampoo legs regularly with medicated shampoo (horse stuff or vosene or head and shoulders) rinse well, then rinse again. some brewers yeast in a handful of chaff will help with the itch habit. Well done you for giving him a nice home, and good luck with the showing!
 
No idea what he looked when he was rescued. We were offered a look at pics but I really didn't wanna know it would have broken my heart. His names larry and I'm thinking mr brightside as his show name. Might have to look into the frontline doseage etc it makes me cringe thinking of the little critters in his feathers

You could try Coopers Fly repellent plus, I think it does mites as well, I'll check tomo.. you should be able to find it on line :)

if it's any consolation, my horse does exactly the same with gates and fencing! Although as a non hairy WB, he is doing it to be naughty and stamps on the rails to break them :eek: ! I have to electric fence off all of the fences, bit of a pain! Every now and then I can hear a 'dink' noise when he has worked out a way to reach the gate!

Your boy looks in great condition now. Hate to think the things he's seen.
 
I use coopers on my others horses tail for the little bit of sweet itch but I've never thought of trying it on him I could give it a go thanks. And mil1212 thank god someone else has the same problem. We've fenced the gate off and scream at him when he does it on the paddock fence and he soon wanders off
 
Gorgeous boy, well done for taking him on.

Can I ask how much frontline to use? Mine is very hairy and rubs and is seriously scabby and uncomfortable. Nothing seems to help. :(
 
Cinnamon toast I know what you mean. A few have said take his feathers off I've trimmed them back where the scabs were but I don't want to shave them completely! If anyone can help with frontline doseage I'd be very greatful
