It's always one thing after another! And I am on the edge of giving up horses all together, I know this isn't this fault at all, the poor mite, but I seem to have the worst ever luck with horses.

This is how I found him on Thursday! He went into a new field the previous Saturday and came out with a few kick/bite marks but nothing which went through the skin, he seemed to of settled then I come up to this! The whole field has been checked and checked by about 5 of us and there is no way he has done it in there. Vet reckons a horse has kicked him just at the right angle! Slightly different position and I wouldn't have a horse today!

After vet cleaned it up/cut off the bits of dangling flesh!

Day after, she left it for 2 days as it was so wide and swollen there was no way stitches would hold. Even after the swelling went down she didn't think they would hold - all the muscle inside is ripped too.

Internal and external stiches and she managed to get the whole thing stitched!

He's been such a brave boy through all this! Stuck in his stable 24/7 being injected everyday, cleaned etc.

Not as bad as your poor boy! But a couple of months ago now M had this:

I turned up took her rug off in the field and thought "what is that smell?" Look down near where her front straps are of her rug and a bloody absess! Ive never seen/experienced one before and thought urghh! Vet turned up anti botics etc, when we were cleaning it we could fit 3 fingers in her neck! Horrible!

Poor poor horses!

I hope your boy gets better soon!!

Thank you everyone! Yep vet did a fab job, she really didn't think they would hold. He has been such a sweetie about it all too, it seems to be healing very well, fingers crossed!

Nasty! That is his backside (quarters) isn't it? Have any of the horses he's out with got screw in road studs in at all? Just wondering as that's one hell of an injury from a kick!

As someone has said, the vet has certainly done a fantastic job there! When I saw the first two pics I was wondering what they'd do with it.

Hope he's back to normal relatively soon!!

If thats a kick, wow! Shocker of an injury.
A horse I knew did a smiliar thing, and the only explanation was that she rolled/fell over on a stone as there were skid marks and a tiny amount of blood near a stone you would never thought would be big enough to cause injury. She healed up, with a lump and is currently only 4, so who knows what damage was really done to muscles ect.
I would really think, if a kick is the only possible cause, that you need to find out the field pecking order and make sure if your horse is being bullied by another that they stay seperate if possible, would hate to see a repeat performance.
Lots of healing vibes, all the best. x

Ouch! Not sure if many will agree but from personal experience with this:

Its a hole in his neck that the vet said a few mm's lower and he would have bled to death, we still don't know what did it to this day. The vet however thought it would create a lot of scar tissue due to being in an awkward place to stitch/being very swollen so someone told me about Activon Manuka Honey, which I packed into the hole. Worked really really well and he has very minimal scar tissue now and didn't take very long to heal, our vets were very impressed by it :)

I would hate for that to be true! We found absolutely nothing in the field when we found him. Only thing is, is that it is about an inch deep and not completely the same shape inside... very odd though!

Feeling a bit queasy now having viewed this on an empty stomach so all credit to you and vet for dealing with that - hope it really heals quickly and well.

That is some kick!!!! Poor sausage.

Can yard not suggest all back shoes taken off for herd turnout?? In case it was a kick...

Poor lad. Hopefully you'll be able to make alternative turnout arrangements for him when he's ready to go back out.

Good grief, so lucky! Hope the recovery goes well.

Open question to anyone - how come no drain for possible infection? Im used to seeing little pipe things on similar wounds I think?

Thanks everyone! Vet was back out this morning and very happy with his progress, from tomorrow he can go out into a small paddock for 1/2hour - 1hour with me watching.
Once he is able to go back out properly he is going out with the oldies! He's such a wuss, he runs away from a horse who looks in his direction! Poor boy.
