Ellie's leg became infected this week

She was doing really well - the vet came out the day after she hurt herself and agreed with us that it was best to try to save the flap of skin, rather than cut it away. He put five staples in, and because it was nice and clean he felt there was no need for her to go onto anti biotics. She seemed to do well for the first 4 or 5 days, so under guidance from the vet we took the dressing off to let the wound dry up and begin to heal.
Within a day, there was a build up of pus beginning to seep from the wound. We persevered for another day but the pus seemed to get worse, so the vet gave us some anti biotics for her. She was really beginning to bother about the leg at this point, and would try to lick it whenever she could. We decided another vet visit was necessary as things had not gone as we had hoped they would. On Friday night, the vet removed her dressing (we'd begun to cover it again after Ellie started trying to pull the staples out) and there was an absolute stream of pus - it really was horrible

The vet decided that the staples needed to come out, but as soon as she pulled on them the entire flap of skin came away. Poor, poor girlie - no wonder it hurt and itched her so much, with all that infection building behind the skin

The wound is now totally open so we're back to square one now - we just need to wait for the skin to heal over. She's already a lot happier about it now the skin has been removed - I guess it was worth a try to save it, but in the long run all it has done is set us back nearly two weeks in the healing process

She's been so amazingly brave - everyone at the yard has commented on what a star she is, being stabled 24/7 and still seeming cheerful. Through all this she's not needed any sedative - as much as I'm sure it has hurt her, she's been a star for us to deal with it all. I just cant believe that through two completely unrelated incidents, she's now been out of work for the best part of three months

I just want to ride my girlie again, and get back to normal!

Sorry for the whingey post

I know there are a lot of people out there with horses a whole lot poorlier and who have needed much more time off, but still, I love my girlie so much and I hate seeing her hurt

Give you a tip ... To speed the healing use manuka honey. You can buy it in different strengths (Highest strength = more expence) but, it really works wonders as a healing ''cream''.
Yes, its sticky!!

Horsecrazy and Sharon - thank you

ruthnmeg - I remember using honey (with grated carrot!) before, for mud fever! It works really well - thanks for the tip!

Hope she gets better soon. Could be worse, my horse has a tear in her DDFT and has been on box rest for 7 months with no hopes of riding her until next spring. The tear is within her hoof so in worst possible place and time is the healer. I really miss riding her, we were making real progress in our lessons and its just come to a full stop. Never mind, shes happy enought and thoroughly spoilt. I do have someone elses horse to ride and have lessons on so all is not lost. Still sh..te tho.

Oh, dear, poor Ellie and poor you!

I can see why they advised leaving the flap of skin, and what a shame it didn't work and infection got in. Poor girl, it must be very sore. I hope the antibiotics see off the infection and it heals well and quickly.

Oh no poor Ellie! Sending lots of healing vibes for her.

If you ever want a pony to sit on I have 3 you can take your pic of.

Aw no, she's been so brave! At least it sounds like it can start healing properly now, but it's a shame the flap didn't heal. Sending lots of vibes to her, hopefully she will bounce back in no time now x

oh bless her.hope shes better soon .dont things always seem to go in a run of bad luck.hopefully youve had it all now and will have a long spell of calm

Poor you! My mates horse is just going through something similar. You will be amazed how quickly it will heal! Only early days at the minute, but I bet in a months time it will be like a scab! My bay had some stitches out years ago, and the wound broke open. The vet told me that sometimes deeper injuries heal inside out xxx

Thank you to everyone for your kind words

I'm trying not to be down about it at the moment - as I said, I know so many people have a hell of a lot worse stuff to deal with, but it's so frustrating to be stuck in this routine of cleaning, bandaging, cleaning, bandaging....and still ending up with an infection

Hopefully we're past the worst now - it looked really good tonight and she's a lot happier now, so fingers crossed we may be getting somewhere!

Hugs to everyone whose horses are also poorly at the moment x

Oh hun. Hugs. Hopeuflly now it will heal quickly and well.
