It is gutting. It happened to me about 10 years ago. I had to tell myself it was just stuff and could be replaced. I was just grateful they didn't take my horses.

So sorry to hear this mate, Thieving scumbags, hope they trip over the reins on the bridle and smash their face on a bottle that just happens to be broken where they land.
Also hope you get your stuff back

My saddle is security penned but as you say useless unless somebody checks...but it also has distinctive markings where my mare decided to hold it when it was only a week old

so mares dental records might be needed..

Aww. Gutted for you. We had our tackroom broken into a few months back & I still get nervous about my saddle being in there now.

Hopefully your insurance will cover it all but it's still a massive pain in the ass.

For goodness sake why on earth do people not take notice and get lockable saddle racks. I put a huge post up on how to protect tack and had 5 responses to it, this was done with the police and horsewatch to make it very hard for thieves to get away with your tack.

Our tackroom was cleared out of over £10k worth of tack and after a lot of hard research and advice it is 99% thief proof. I researched and researched on how to keep our precious tack safe, but the lack of replies shows how low a priority it is in most peoples lives to protect what we spend a lot of our working hours earning. The thieves woke me coming down our drive, but were in and out before the police could get here, you have to put enough security in place to make it not worth their time to be caught (less than 10 minutes). You can protect yourself but it costs (nearly 1k later for us) and take heed of advice from others.

I am very sorry it has happened but there are a lot of things you can do to protect your tack, but no one in the horse community ever thinks it will happen to them, and even worse cannot justify spending £30 on something that will stop their saddle being stolen when their saddle is worth hundreds, we have to start helping ourselves.

As a ps the thieves have been back and got away with nothing. One up for us

It's an awful feeling, we've had it happen to us several time so don't keep any tack at the stables now it's all at home.

I see where you're coming from scally but I feel that if thieves really want it they will get it sadly. We have two padlocked gates they have to get to to get to our stables. As I said we don't have any tack there now but we did have a generator for power. They haev stolen it 3 times in total but the 2nd times it was locked within a steel industrial container locked with 3 padlocks covered by steel so only accessible from underneath (ie cannot cut with bolt croppers).

The thieves still got in by hacksawing (must have taken hours) through the HUGE hinges on the side of the container!

After this we had that side welded shut so only one door can be opened. Yet again thieves came - this time they cut through the two gates chains and used an acetiline torch to cut a hole through the container!!! All this for a generator wirth what £300-£400??!

Since then we have had electricity installed but it still astounds me the lengths thieves will and do go to to get what they want.

Scally - the chances are they would just rip the saddle racks off the wall with a crow-bar. As LadyT says - if they want it they will take it. Yards have had their tackroom roofs taken off in the past because the thieves couldn't break the doors down.

OP - is it a coincidence that you had brand-new tack in there? Who knew about it? My old yard was robbed after several of us bought new or new to us saddles. Only the tackrooms with that tack in were targetted. The thief was a disgruntled livery who had been chucked off and who had "by coincidence" introduced us to the seller of the tack (totally kosher business, nothing funny there) so knew exactly who had what. Not so far from Lancs either!

This is the first time I've seen this post, sorry it's a bit late, but that's just gutting for you. :-( !!!

Have you had any news?
