My view on Badminton

Whats the deal with Oli?
I thought the SJ was boring too, but overall not a great badders. Mainly british withdrawals seems a bit sad..
Devestating about the 2 deaths and tbh, I think there has been a lot of stuff saying skwal shouldn't have run but if he'd qualified, surely he was fit to go?
Was not there, and only got to see the SJ but it just wasn't the same as usual

Re - Irishcobs .

I've just read that article you had a link to - total & utter ********!

If the person who wrote it , took some time to learn about eventing , I hope they'd see things differently . It was a tragedy that 2 horses lost their lives , but calling it a ' Deathfest ' is OTT .

Thankfully , the sport is far from being a ' Bygone ' - even if it is mainly white & middleclass

It really makes my blood boil that people can be so uneducated and yet make a public attack on our sport. He said something about "rolling out the pre-made excuses" or whatever it was, but TBH he's fishing for insults there and rolling out his own "microwave meal" of an attack - white and middle class? What age does he live in if he thinks that anyone with any sense gives a damn about "class", let alone ethnicity? Especially in the horse world where the horses don't give a stuff so nor do we! If people continue to have that sort of attitude it'll only be a matter of time before we are forced, in the interests of political correctness, to have one token competitor who is "working class" (note inverted commas, I don't believe "classes" exist TBH just people's judgements) and one token "non-wite, non-British" competitor. It's not Badminton's FAULT there weren't any/many people other than white British people, it's not like they are banned from the event! What utter claptrap (to put it lightly). And what a prat. No wonder we in the horse world seem to have hit a brick wall with non-horsey folk, it's attitudes like that.

People like that are not interested in the arguments, there is no point even trying. They are convinced that we are all 'white middle class' We know it isn't the case but any examples we can give are seen as being the 'token poor person' etc.

I hate this attitude that something is wrong if there are no 'minorities' involved. Why are people looking for this at an event ? It's not like you are screened at the gate for colour!!
What a prat.

Skwal's connections had nothing to prove - the horse loved his job end of story. The owner was back on the yard today and is devastated. We also saw Andrew this morning and he was very upset as well. The first Andrew felt was him wobble slightly after the last fence and up until then had given him a fantastic ride, despite him running out at VV. I wish people would keep their opinions to themselves. Skwal wasn't unsound, he wasn't sold on because he had a dicky heart - it was a freak accident that could have happened at intro or Pre-novice level. In fact the story I've heard is that he was sold because he'd jacked it in in the SJ. That could be heasrsay though. It is totally uncalled for. In fact, and I may be wrong but it was Rachel Bayliss that started competing Skwal all those years ago and she is also Andrew's trainer. People need to be carfeul what they say as a lot of what has been said is quite defamatory. I'm sure if Skwal's connections read all this it would deepen the hurt they're already experiencing. Look at it's BE record and give Andrew some credit. Let the poor horse rest in peace.

[/ QUOTE ]

Does this case not deserve the same questioning that AT's horse did? IMO if your horse hits his head, it's quite dangerous to continue on. I thought that we weren't going by records, we were going by what we've seen?

it's views like these that put a downface on eventing and any other risky horse sport. it is NOT a racist event - it is open to all. and the horses wouldn't darn jump if they weren't happy doing it. there were two very unfortunate fatalities but both were freak accidents and can in no way be related to 'animal cruelty' as they were both treated like royalty and well trained to enter the event. what a stupid comment

It was one of those things, horses die of heart attacks fairly regularly after xc, there was nothing wrong with the horse when it started, I agree. I'm meerly questioning why he ran on the ground when so many found it unsatisfactory when he'd had a very bad dressage and the horse didnt need to prove itself at 4*

[/ QUOTE ]

Its never going to win a 4*, so why not run it? He was looking for a completion not a placing. You don't just run for the sake of winning. By looking at his results he's done a good job if not better than MD did, it also always has a c*ap dressage so if you applied the rule of 'he has nothing to prove' the horse would never run. And did anyone whinge when BK ran it 3*. The ground was one big excuse, Andrew is one man who'd know and he said it was fine. The American riders said they run on even harder ground at home so weren't worried. Nobody worries about slips in the wet conditions - they can just as easily cause damage to tendons and strains on the legs.

GET OVER IT!! Its not even comparable to what Amy T did.

Do you really think the ground caused a heart attack? Are we forgetting how fit and well the horses looked at the finish? And how well they were (according to SB and HH) trotting up....

Exactly!
The sport isn't just about winning, for some people completion is the aim. If you say a horse has no chance of being placed therefore it shouldn't run does that mean that any horse placed out of the top 10 or so after dressage should just not bother?
As for not running on hard ground, yes it does put strain on horses legs but so does very wet/soft ground, and I have seen many horses finish cross country looking far more tired after a very wet event.
Surely the number of horses who passed the vet inspection on sunday morning shows that the ground wasn't as terrible as some had suggested.

Why does there always have to be blame, accidents happen and it could have been anyone of those horses out on course? It was tragic and perhaps Sqwal never stood a chance of winning but what's to stop them trying (didn't they all say that about Brit at one point!). I am sure that horse was treat like a king until the moment he died and am sure he enjoyed his last few moments (obviously prior to his illness/injury), horses don't compete at this level unless it is in their hearts.
I am sure all concerned are absolutely devastated and are just like us in many ways so my thoughts are with them.

I agree. I think the horse that died of a heart attack at the Paralympic games at the start of the dressage shows us that this really can happen to any horse at any time with no warning.

What A Performance was very lame after XC, we were sat right beside her as she jumped off. Shame she didnt stop to thank her horse before running across to hug her associates...

And this may sound very lightly bitter but as the Aldous's own BE event is alway rutted, concrete and under prepared ..I feel a little like it was just reward. Our own horse was out for 6 months following a dressage test at thier event 2 years ago...so perhaps now they will think more of the going and less about prestige?

Did I say that? No way!!
Actually, 6 horses pulled up noticeably lame and many looked a bit stiff in the morning. I'm not saying thats due to the hard ground, horses do always pull up lame at big 3 fdays and it rarely causes an issue bar stiffness on the Sunday morning

Yep, I agree. I was at the vet inspection. Just two or three horses did not look right, but the rest looked great and fit.

The horse that died in Athens was a fench horse, it ws just going into the arena, and just dropped.
It was the most terrible thing.
I think one of the germans then lent her their horse.
They put a massive piece of paper on the stable managers door and all the nations wrote their condolences.
Originally there were rumours that something was wrong under ground. But these were son quashed (SP) and it really was a freak accident.
The French block was not a nice place to be that day!!!

Exactly, horses are always mega stiff Sunday morning whatever the ground. Like Richard Pitman said, how many horses would trot up sound the day after the G.National? How many people are lame after the London marathon? The ground had nothing to do with stiff horses. Anyone pinpoint where WAP was lame? Could have banged a stifle or knee on a fence, lameness was not necessarily caused by the ground.

I'm fairly sure it was his left shoulder, he was unhappy turning.
Anyone remember which horse it was the slipped over just before the trot up?

I think it was Caroline Powell's Lenamore who spooked and slipped just before going to trot up. Poor Caroline, must've been a heartstopping moment to think after all that work a spook at the trot up could finish their competition!

He passed though.

Wow i didnt realise that people over here knew about it.
Due to the fct that no other horses had an issue and no one around area had felt anything they decided it was not possible. I think they may also have done a post mortem on him.
It was quite stressful over there for everyone, although the horses were kept in immense surroundings. If the horse had a weak heart or a problem to start with, the flight, the heat etc may just hve been enough!
