Can I get honest opinions please? After reading through most of the latest "Warmblood" thread I am still not sure if I should have mine or not!!

Background: he is my first horse, he is a big, shiny warmblood from the Zangersheide stud and his sire was Calvaro Z, a puissance horse ridden by John Whittaker in the Sydney olympics (I only know this by reading his passport and being told by my instructor - it meant nothing to me). He can jump. I can't. I am not a good rider and not young either.

Obviously my horse was bred to show jump and he won't be doing that with me so should I sell him to someone who can do him justice?

if you are happy with him and he seems happy with you keep him same goes for any horse and rider. Sounds like you've got yourself a very nice horse.

Do you feed and water him? Does he get plenty of exercise and turnout?
If so then dont sell - he is happy!

Ditto. In time, yoo may find the confidence to jump and he will be yoor saviour and teach yoo everything!

I'd much rather see a well looked after horse with wasted potential then a horse that no-one has any care for jumping at the olympics.

He doesn't know he was bred to SJ! As long as he is cared for and happy and you are enjoying owning him, that is all that matters.

It annoys me when people feel obliged to do what their horse has done before!

Hey, you never know, as your confidence grows you might decide to pop a few jumps and suprise yourself - atleast you'll have the option which is always a good thing.

Aslong as you're working him and keeping the old grey matter busy I don't see the problem xx

Is he happy?

I get a bit cross at people who think others are 'wasting' their horses. People want to do different things with their equine chums, and it is up to them what they choose to do. Some people want to be out competing every weekend, others are quite happy pottering around the local countryside.

Whichever category you fall in to, there is no rule dictating what sort of horse you should have and whether you are 'experienced' enough to own it. if you enjoy your horse and he is happy doing what you want from him, then stop worrying and get on enjoying!!!

Your horse doesn't stand around wishing he was off competiting at x, y and z. He doesn't spend his evenings philosophising about whether he is being wasted or fulfilling his potential.

If you love him and he gives you pleasure, then it's nothing to do with anyone else. Perhaps one day you'll pluck up the confidence to do some jumping with him... perhaps you wont... Either way, I dont think your horse gives a damn providing he's fed, watered and loved. Some would even argue its more pleasant for them to be fed watered and loved as opposed to fed, watered and treated as a jumping machine with an opposite end of the spectrum owner

WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!

Ok will admit it now i'm far too lazy to read other post BUT WHAT!!

Hes warmblood... so what? Have I totaly missed somthing??

Like saying crue to have a native.... He doesn't have a crue who he is... warmblood or sjing what ever....

The horse Amy Stovold rides, Lenski, was bred to jump…and was doing well at it before she sat on him...but he does dressage now. Google him and you will see his credentials.
Its how you ride them, not what you do with them! They don’t know what they are supposed to be doing….

Do you have any problems with your horse?? If not why would you want to sell him?? I dont think im getting the post.

Incidently i have a well bred WB to, but im not bothered about what job he was bred for. We do all sorts he gets turned out & lives a happy life. I havnt seen him fretting about what he should be doing to live up to his pedigree. I certainly wouldnt sell him.

Thank you everyone who responded with nice, positive comments. Yes, I love him. He is well looked after and he seems happy. I ride him every day in the indoor school and I was really brave today and hacked out to the end of the drive. I know it doesn't sound much but I had a loan horse who used to bolt with me when I hacked him out and I lost my confidence totally.

I am having weekly lessons and, although our progress isn't always as quick as I'd like, I think we are shaping up into a real "team". I couldn't bear to sell him to be honest so I'm not sure what I would have done if everyone had been really negative.

Forget-me-Not sorry if I have upset you with my silly question. I am a novice and I come here to get more experienced people's opinions because I really want to learn what to do for the best for my horse x

This is a joke yeah?

Stick him in a field and do nothing with him...he won't care! Warmblood, coldblood, hot blood, green blood!!!All that goes through his mind on a daily basis is likely to be where's the next blade of grass/hay...ooo think I'll have a little drink...grass?...fieldmate...grass?...... however he was bred..he's just another horse, enjoy him
grin.gif

Sorry...??? I think its people who have made you feel like this that should be sorry.... just remember a horse is like a river... he doesn't know where hes come from nor where hes going... as long as hes feed, water, and company he won't hate you for not taking him jumping! You should be proud of your selves! I know what a big thing it is to make it too the end of the drive....

Thank you feu folet and dressage crazy. No, I'm not having any real problems with him except a bit of nappiness and he can be a bit hard to lead in hand because he gets a bit over excited 'cos it's winter I think. I am working on that although today he reared up and waved his front feet at me when I was leading him. It's not nastiness though - just over exuberance but I do know I have to get more control of him from the ground. When he's ridden he's fine.

I wasn't posting about his breeding to "show off" - I have heard of John Whittaker and I know what Puissance is but other than that I really don't have a clue about show jumping and I wondered if I was one of those people who get frowned upon for buying a horse whose talents outweigh their own.

I think Forget me Not was more dismayed that you could be feeling this way than anything else

Your horse is obviously suited to you and giving you confidence.. in that way he IS "doing a job". There are so many horses out there that never do find good homes and to me, a caring, loving owner comes above everything else.

Im sure he's happy and that's all that matters. Don't ever, ever let people make you feel like you aren't doing him justice or he'd be better in a competitive home. HE doesn't care!

Thanks everyone for your helpful and positive comments. I feel much better now! I think it all started when I overheard someone commenting on his breeding and how he was bred to jump etc which made me feel as though they thought he was wasted on me. Silly to be so sensitive I know but I will keep on doing what I'm happy doing and one day, who knows, I just might enter my first unaff dressage comp!

aslong as he is happy i really wouldnt worry about it!! and im sure he is!!

my Archie is by a Grade A and out of a Grade A mare, and all his lines are showjumpers however i wont be showjumping to anywhere near that height. i might do the odd 3'3 course but thats it. Hes with me for dressage - he doset know he was bred to showjump!!

I just had a similar converstaion with my friend a few minutes ago
grin.gif

I was saying that I felt sort of bad as I didnt get up to see my horse for the past two days
crazy.gif
to which I got the reply

Do you really think P will care?? He has been out in the field and lunged during the day and most improtantly FED!!!!!

Its so true as long as his stomach is satisified Pride is in Heaven
grin.gif
Horse dont acre about reaching their potiential or competing!!! They just want to be looked after and FED
grin.gif

One thing I will say, is that most TB's I've met need to be kept busy or they'll get depressed. Never owned a warmblood so not sure if that's true. Actually I'm lying, my American Saddlebred was a warmblood and he was the same.

Keeping busy doesn't mean aff showjumping though!

Ditto Vicjp.

There are litterally hundreds of horses who where bred to do a job, be it race, jump dressage or hack and most of them never actually do what they were bred to do!

If you have fun together, you are happy and feel safe and he does everything you ask of him then whats the problem?

At the end of the day he doesnt know what he was bred to do does he lol so if you choose to do pure dressage so be it!

Have fun and enjoy your horse

Hi just wanted to say ditto to all the above. I have a warmblood, not sure if he well bred or not. However he gave me back my confidence after having a really naughty section d mare. He is quite naughty in hand too and rears sometimes in hand, hes not malicious whatsoever you just always have to keep out of the way of his front feet just in case. He can even be cheeky up to the mounting block and as soon as im on him a poppet. Iv had him two years and he hasnt changed.

He he, his life may lack showjumping but I am riding him twice today to keep him on his toes! He will get a lovely surprise when he sees me coming along with his saddle for the second time.

I kind of want to learn to jump as well because he was being a bit naughty the other week and he ran off with me and we ended up sailing over a jump which got in the way and I really enjoyed it. I thought I would just fall off if I tried jumping but Ollie cleared it so effortlessly that all I had to do was lean forward and enjoy it. My instructor said my seat was quite good but not sure if she was being honest or not as she really wants to teach me to jump!

We've got to get over that. been told that every time he moves, stop trying get back on the ground, walk him around and try again.....apparently they get the message eventually!
