So far i have established that my welsh D likes to be ridden EVERY other day otherwise he is as sharp as a box of knives  took him in the school Saturday (after 5 days off) and he did his welsh dragon impression for the first 10 mins, it actually took me about 3 mins to persuade him to walk past a barn of sheep! He is such a wimp :p his tail was on his back, he was trying to piaffe, head upright ears forward pinged!! got off him and walked him round a few times and he settled. Jumped back on and had some nice work from him.. I have sussed that when he gets tired/bored he will roll his head and become quite impatient in halt transitions. I tend to keep his time in the school for just 20 mins 1 x per week. Hacked him out with 2 other ponies and he was excellent, he did jump a huge puddle from a standstill though!
Yesterday i took him out alone for the first time, he was a bit snorty but soon settled, he was very good and even got him to cross a little stream (running water about 1cm deep :p) plenty to spook at including donkeys and fallen trees etc but he wasn't bothered! He's so much better if he is ridden a few times per week.
Had the saddler out today and had his saddle adjusted to fit him, coming back in 4 months to re-adjust - he has alot of filling out to do!
Dentist came too and rasped his teeth - no wolf teeth either :)
Very excited about him, he certainly has a spark about him and he's a very quick learner and forward going - but he is also opinionated, sharp and definitely has a mind of his own!! but once he's on my side he's very very sweet! :D slow and steady is the way forward with this little chap :D evrybody seems to love him too and says he should do well in the ring :) (his daddy qualified for HOYS last year :))
Not sure if you remember but he had a retained testicle and had a massive op last feb which really took it out of him, he did stop growing and lost condition, however he is looking good now and have a feeling he's going to be a big chunky boy!

This is the first ridden pic (and only one) i have of him (back in December). (flash has been removed, it was the person who helped back him who put it on) Its now gone as he doesn't need it :)

Mine likes to be ridden 2/3 days on the trot and then a day or two off. He is rising five but has a heck of a lot of filling out to do. We've not hacked out yet as he's not confident enough on the roads and gets rather anxious. He spooked slightly at something in hand at the weekend and broke my little toe.Still lunging two or three circles before I get on to get rid of any sharpness as the weather is so awful he doesn't move much in his field so pent up energy!

two stunning welshies there.

my 2 5 YO have just been clear round jumping tonight. Both been hacking out since Christmas, and was this was their first jump since December. My boy was amazing, really took the jumps on this time. Last time he was just too chilled and flopped over them. But tonight he really enjoyed himself. My mare, well she was firing on all cylinders again, jumped to the right on the 2nd part of the double, rider hit the wing and unfortunately fell off:eek:. She was fine though, phew. Mare just carried on a jumped anther fence of her choice. Rider got back on and popped her over another jump to make sure she was frightened, and she wasn't. Both behaved brilliantly. I'm a very proud mum tonight. So big well done to the Zanzi babies, and fox moss.

This is my boy, a real punt but so far hes turning into a super little horse. Always tries his best and has so much to give! :) Hes 5 and was backed April '12 and then left doing nothing until I got him in August - the improvement is massive and I'm hoping for mega things from him!!

Can I ask how soon you start to work them on the bit? With mine I'm inclined to get him confident in being ridden etc first but some people seem to go for it from day one and I can see their point of view as well, just wondered what other section d owners did.

mine is 12 this year and still mad as a box of frogs!! Haven't ridden him since the summer I am ashamed to say and seem to have lost all interest in getting back on him. Sad really but he has a home for life here and he doesn't seem to mind being a field ornament and he has four other ponies to keep him company. OP your's is gorgeous.

My welsh C that I am bringing on for my daughter. Don't jump her high but she has some pop loose schooling. Can't wait til she is ready for a small jockey to ride. She is no way a kid's ride just now, but will be when I've finished with her. Having great fun meanwhile. Would love a carbon copy in a 15.2 her attitude is superb and such a fast learner.

This is my Welshie wonder Juniper...

And the thing that is making her look so interested?!

Apologies for the dreadful quality of this one...

I bought her pretty much unhandled as a 5 year old, backed her then had one catastrophe after another (bad kicks in BOTH hocks and having 5 inches of her tail amputated...still makes me cry!) but she once back in work has proved to be the most fabulous, intelligent, willing pony I have ever worked with. Having been bought as a project, two years later she well and truly has her pretty little hooves under the table... Just dying to get back riding again as she has had the winter off due to my work. Roll on spring!!

He is very lovely! Can't beat a welshie! :)
Mine is Luna and she is actually part-bred (though I dont think you'd know looking at her), 8 and I bred her (I owned her mum!). She was extremely brave as a youngster, the easiest to back and bombproof in traffic, but as she has got older, she is actually getting wimpier! She went out on loan for a while and I think it really shook her confidence (bless her - big wimp! haha)
I love her to bits though and wouldn't have her any other way. She is actually poorly at the moment, having been struck down with a virus/infection of her liver! :( She has always loved people (she is the sort to come galloping up the field like Black Beauty neighing her head off) but she is really clingy whilst feeling poorly. Get well soon Looney

Dollymix she is gorgeous!!! I'm biased I know but Welshies are just so beautiful.

And either bold as brass or absolutely pathetic- never seems to be a middle ground!

Ah thanks :) I am biased but think she is very pretty!
We always have a joke that she has one hoof on world domination and the other on the panic button! lol She is not that bad really, she is still fairly bold but she does definitely need more reassurance than she did when she was first backed and ridden away.

Yours is stunning too! LOVE chestnuts and want one as my next! Although maybe I should just try and find her a nice ginger welsh boyfriend!

Lovely pictures :) I love seeing and sharing it's great fun OP sounds like you're having a productive winter lol!!

Here's mine :) He's my first horse and on full loan- had my first ever lesson 2 days after I got him (Nov '12) so he's literally taught me everything I know! :D
