So the nails in my horses shoes are coming out again through the wall of his hooves. He is only shod on the front. This happened about a month ago as well and I got the farrier to come out and put the shoes back on with the nails in correctly. I am a bit concerned that this is happening again and wondering why.

His front hooves are quite cracked unfortunately around where the nails are and that's not helped by the drier weather we have had. The ground isn't rocky so it's not that. Wondering if it is the farriers technique as well as I have never seen the nails move through like this before and she has had issues with him because he is a git to her (and only her he is fine with other farriers).

Anyone else had the nails poke through the wall of the hoof more than they should? Do you think it will stop when the new farrier does them? Or is there something wrong with his hooves? Other farrier never said there was but I think she just gets fed up with his attitude to her as well.

I'm a bit puzzled as to what you are describing. When the shoes are put on the nails come out through the hoof, the farrier turns them down and seats them to keep the shoes on. Sometimes the hoof grows too much before the next shoeing and the nails are pulled back out so the ends of the nails are no longer flat to the hoof and stick out - risen clenches. Is that what you mean? Sorry if I'm being dense!

Sorry I didn't describe it well but yes that's what I meant. Just never seen it happen to him before but guess it's normal then. Hooves must just be growing more than normal.

I was also puzzled, after a month or so the foot will have grown so the clenches start to rise away from the foot, it is worse in summer as the feet grow faster so they require shoeing more frequently, the ones here need doing every 5 weeks at this time of year but can go 6-7 in the winter unless they are doing loads of roadwork, if the horse was shod a month or so ago he probably just needs doing again asap.

Yes, it's normal, and not the farrier's fault. Sometimes it's as if the horse's feet have a sudden growth spurt and suddenly they need shoes in half the time compared to normal. To avoid the risk of the clenches catching and causing damage you can bend them back down to the hoof, but obviously that's just a short term fix.

I agree it sounds normal and horses are no respecters of how often we get paid. If you are unhappy with the way your farrier treats your horse however change your farrier to one you can trust.

It's not her fault he has taken a disliking to her. God knows why the rest of the horses there like her. Changed farrier to prevent her getting hurt as he is not well behaved with her.

Cheers guys i thought it was a stupid question but was confused as it's never happened before.
