For those of us here who named our horses ourselves (stable names, not show names) - how did you come up with them? I just wondered this because I named Ellie myself - yet Ellie is somewhat common in the horsey world, and there was no rhyme or reason as to me choosing it. When we were looking at horses to buy, I spent ages dreaming up exotic titles for the ones with pants names - there was one horse we nearly bought who was called Iggy - I planned to rename him Dante when he became ours
smirk.gif
When we bought Ellie, she had just been shipped over from Holland, and her name on her papers was 'Chicka'. I hated it, and couldnt even find a definition or name meaning, and when my instructor started calling her Chicka Tikka Masala I knew I had to change it! she's so pretty, it would have been easy to dream up some fancy foreign sounding name, yet I was riding her back from the school the evening she became ours, and I just knew that she was Ellie. Simple and pretty - and Miss Ellie as her showname suited her down to the ground.

How did you guys come up with names? Were yours named after people/idols etc, did you spend ages with a dictionary, or did a name just pop into your head the minute you set eyes on the horse?

I went to see Murphy on St Patrick's Day, and the only reason I saw him at all was because I was up that way (120 miles away) anyway to go to a (don't laugh

) Westlife concert. So we decided he needed an irish name, even tho he's not irish!!

Never renamed any of ours but naming the shire horses (grandfather used to breed them) there was no reason behind their names, but we had some well named ones.
(Lotti, Tilly, Hamish, William, etc) I am sure he just went through a book of baby names!

Mine came with the name swifter on his passport and we thought it was dangerous for a childs pony but his passport was fake anyway so we had to get a new one. Hes now called Pharaoh Swift (Pharaoh/fez for short) because when he was younger he had lovely eyeliner like the eqyptian pharaoh's.

Mine have come with their names but I know why

BAy in my sig is JJ as the markings on her face are like 2 J's.

Pony is called Angelica as she is a br@t - after Angelica in the rug rats - its her down to the ground!

Derry was called Patula when she was shipped over from Ireland. But prevous owner refused to have a horse calle Patula so she becam Derry - and it suited her to.

My daughter and I couldn't decide on a name for our new horsey, so we put all the names we really liked into a hat and chose his name that way. We came up with Merlin, which we thought we couldn't tamper with or shorten....

lol.....

These days he's called anything and everything from The Merls, through Merly, to Squirly Girly!!

I named my foal Prada, as apparantly with warmbloods it's a tradition to name the foal after the first letter of it's sires name, his name was Picasso so it had to be P! And she's a bit of a diva and i like my labels!!

I named my TB 'Jesper'. He was called Harvey when we bought him but he'd only had the name a few months as he was fresh off the field and we didn't really want to call him Harvey as a woman at our yard had just had her Harvey pts that week. He's called Jesper after a previous Chelsea footballer. My Dad stumped up the money and is a huge Chelsea fan! It beats Frank!!! His show name is March in Honour as our other TB who we had pts was Marchtime and Jesper's Dad is Honours Degree.

I named my foal Solomon (Full title Worthy Opposition as he was a fleetwater offspring) because he was wise beyond his years. He is the big chap on my siggy. The little Grey irish fella you can see was called Ataboy. I didn't really like this name although I kept it for competitions so I gave him the stable name of Alby or little albs. Alby means Grey in Irish. The new aquisition, my mare called Tictac is a registered dutch warmblood, goodness knows where that name came from but she is affectionately called Missy cow!

I named my boy Ofeigur after an Icelandic horse I rode in Lapland and I wanted an unusual name.

Although I generally give my horses Hebrew names for some reason.

I've only named one - Glory.

I don't know how I came up with it, just seemed to suit her
laugh.gif
She's the chcocolate brown with the crescent shaped star in my sig so I made her show name 'Mornington Crescent'.

I WISH I could have renamed my second pony as she was called Barbie! Yes Barbie
crazy.gif

She was just on loan though so couldn't rename her. It did suit her though and I got used to it, plus kids loved it lol. She's the first grey on the left.

My others have been called Misty (Misty Morning), April (Bay Angel) and current one is Tara.
Tara's showname is 'My Lady Tara' so my friends have taken to asking how the Lady Tara is so I think her nickname will probably be Lady T lol

I wasn't going to add to this thread in case I offended anyone so I apologise in advance - my horse is called Jerry cos he came over from Germany.
His passport name is Dornburg's Oriv and I really couldn't make a stable name from that so I was calling him The Jerry while I researched some German names but Jerry just stuck!

maybe juergen?

i've only ever named one horse, and that was his shown name when he was just born. his mum's show name is eversley express, and his dad romanov II (famous one, yes) and i've always liked combining the two, so he became Eversley Romex
smile.gif
his owner always has eversley at the front of her showjumpers names
smile.gif

i think we named a couple of the 'project' horses we had in - pepper, arthur, breeze, but most came with names - strangest was halfpenny, but penny didnt suit her so she just became HP! that didnt suit her either but was quicker to say.

i never understood why shadow was named shadow - bit odd for a chestnut! but she was imported from denmark so maybe it was a translation?! i wont even go into nicknames, i'd be here for hours

Ok heres the silly one you have all been waiting for!!

My boy is called Sherbet Dib Dab as on the way to collect him we stopped at the petrol station and my daughter asked for a Sherbet Dib Dab. His stable name is sherbet and suits him down to the ground, and we put a smile on lots of peoples faces at shows when the name sherbet dib dab is read out. Think it reminds them of child hood. Or maybe they are just laughing at me - to old to care!!

I named my foal last year Raggamuffin, after an australian racing yacht of all things! (but the best boat I have ever been on
smile.gif
) SHe's the first in my siggy

Mouse is named Mouse because she was that colour - plus she is v cute.

Arwen is named so (about 8 yrs ago) after Tolkein's lord of the rings character (the book not the film)

And Vatoucha was named 'Vag' for ages because she was always in season!

'Norman' my chestnut mini shetland was named after the vet who came when he was born - he was very poorly, vet asked what the pony's name was and my friend didn't have one so decided to name him in vet's honour. Same vet also gelded him..

I have just got round to getting a passport for him and decided to give him a posh name. I have another mini shetland called Chasend Cassidy (think Butch Cassidy) so Norman's posh name is The Sundance Kid - it really suits him

Got my first ned as a wedding pressie from my OH (= 500 years of brownie points). He came without a name but I always said that my dream was to wake up on Christmas morning and find either Harrison Ford or a horse in my stocking. So when I got a no-name ned, he HAD to be called Harrison!!!!

My boy came with his name (Ross, show name Caross) bred in Sweden and apparantly Caross means athlete in Swedish, which suits him very well! Although his name has gradually become Boo over the years...!
My favourite on has to be a mare the YO had a few years ago, her racing name was Society Pet and her stable name was Tara after Tara Palmer Tomkinson!

Oh I dislike having to name our lot. It takes forever to come up with the registered names as traditionally they have 3 names and you have to offer 6 names (with 3 names in each), so for me it takes ages to check all the bloodlines and come up with 3 names which flow ... for all of the foals
crazy.gif
. I did it though. All stable names for my youngsters come from one of the 3 names, so that part is easy.

My first mare was called Annie but when we went to view her the people kept calling her Lady - 'get this little lady out the stable'. They never once called her Annie so we took her home the next day thinking she was called Lady. They phoned up a few days later and asked 'How are you getting on with Annie?' lol. Shes still called Lady now, her smart name was then Lady Annie after that.

We called our pony foal Smartie, not really too sure why but it suted him so well.

I've named my new Clydedale Reilly. Had lots of suggestions, but settled on Reilly as it is a Gaelic name(means Courageous, valiant) and he was born in Ireland and then shipped to Scotland. Also he will have "the life of Riley" with us, so it suits him!

My friends call my lot the Confectionary team cos I have a :
Smartie, Toffee(in avatar), Lolly and Cookie. All but the last one came with their names, so I must be drawn to sweet things.
