Naming horses....

My beautiful arabxtb was advertised as being called Des- I presumed he must have some beautiful name that Des was a shortened version of, like Desert Storm or something.....turned out to be Desmond!!!

So of course that went straight out the door! And I was wanting an Iranian, easy-for-geordies-to-announce-over-a-tannoy name, so we chose Shah Zadeh meaning 'Prince' and so his stable name is Prince.

Or donkey.

Wish I'd had the chance to name my horse, her breeder must have had no imagination at all. Oh, we'll call this one Black Beauty. Cos she's black. Never mind that she has one white sock too many, is more cart horse than carriage horse and is in fact the wrong gender to begin with!

I always wanted a big Cleveland Bay gelding which I would name Reargunner Rupert.

The best one I ever had was called Useless, he wasn't at all. He came to me with that name and rumour had it that he was hunted by an elderly gentleman who was happy to go at the back, the horse, however, wasn't, and his owner said "This horse is bloody Useless!" That's what I was told anyhow. If anyone ever knew him (East Devon, 1980's, he was well known with the Axe Vale) I'd love to know the real story.

No rhyme or reason to my names, they just come to me (poor horses)

Isabella because she was a prima donna, even as a baby and also because Isabella/Ysabella went with her being a palomino.

Persephone, Castor and Pollux (the twins, couldn't bring myself to bury them nameless, although I wouldn't have lumbered live foals with those names ) because they are all offspring of Zeus.

I'mee, who was the love of my life was that, simply because, from the moment he arrived on this earth he was a cocky, self important sod (I, me, myself, I) He had 4 siblings, I'con, I'sis, I'mahee and I'mahur, the last two are for obvious reasons.

Zeus came to me un-named (well, Luke, but not very macho, Zeus sounds a bit like it and it suits him better - I think) so Tia mentioned which parts of his pedigree were vaguely reasonable, I shortened those, cut them up, and Evie picked them out, his name is the order she picked them up in - Dash Bardee Jet.

My boys proper name is Victor, but that is too close to my name so his stable name is Womble, I came up with this as I thought nobody with a name like Womble could ever be bad!!

Sidney came to me with that name and it does suit him as a stable name although his competition name is his registered racing name - gloria imperator
Ru arrived with the name Rusty..... When I finally got my hands on her I changed it to Ruby as she is a dancing red head with a tendancy to be a little precious... it is usually shortened to RU. Having said that her cometiton name is also her registered racing name - Askyamam..... not many people get that one right though
