I have a horse who is so good in many ways, but has this really annoying habit of napping. He will stop & then walk backwards. Some times slowley in a way of saying sod you I am not going forwards. Or the fast backwards movement with sometimes a spin, but the heading towards a ditch is not funny.
He does this when he is in a group say when we go to leave the yard he will back up so he is not going first through the gate, or when the others go into the yard & I want to go into the school! The other times he does this is when we are going out at certain points on the hack or sometimes he will nap sideways say when going at a jump.
Can anyone give me some ideas as he is brilliant in everyother way.

I have been riding my sisters horse lately for her and she has been doing this ..alot! Every time i go in the school i dont ever do what she expects so never just around the track i just do loads of circles and changes of rein, leg yields and never let her just 'roam'. This has totally solved her napping.

Its a shame you havent got a video of him doing it as then people could see if there is anything your doing wrong - if your sure it isnt and it it were my horse as soon as he napped whichever way he would get a slap on the shoulder he is falling out thru with my schooling whip followed up by a pony club kick forwards. I think it would be an idea to get a video of him doing it before you tell him off as if he is easily escaping because your outside aids are allowing him to - its much easier corrected.
